HAPPY BIRD DAY!
I'm going to nerd out for a sec:
There's this guitar sound right. It's a wall of distortion with an artificial reverb that's used a lot in shoegaze/post rock.
I've been chasing it for almost 12 fucking years and couldn't get it working because the distortion would overload the reverb and it turns into an absolute mess.
I figured it out yesterday. After so fucking long it finally works. The new reverb pedal is bought over xmas had a far higher headroom so wouldn't distort with a high gain input.
Yaaaaaaay!
yaaaaaaay 🙂
Thank you!!! I figured it out last night so I couldn't crank it loud. But today, after my decaf and breakfast, it's getting absolutely cranked!!!!
Siiiiick
It sounds so fucking cool. Like an ethereal wall of sound!
Thanks for all the messages. Squishes back to you all. 🖤
For bird day I wish to mention the stunningly beautiful Dracula Parrot, the covert as fuck Tawny Frogmouth, and the magestically lunatic Bin Chicken. Bakawkk MF!
Got back about 45 minutes ago, apartment was hooooot but could be worse, at least it was a bit cooler than the outside. AC blasting like a mf. Esky tipped on the back floor of the car the one time I didn't wedge it securely, it had yoghurt in it... Luckily there was a spare floor mat on top of the floor (from moving house) and only that received a dribble of the stuff. Promptly washed it out. Could have been a lot, lot worse.
Time for my crackers and dip and maybe some tv. This was the view from the hut I stayed in. I miss nature outside my doorstep so much. I can't wait to move out from here
That’s one gorgeous view outside that window.
Hopefully the aircon will take the edge off.
Welcome back!
That’s a spectacular view.
That's my dream view. Away from the hussle and bustle of the world...
It was really something else. Here's the view on the other side...
I've had trouble falling asleep without my phone (or some sort of distraction) for ages but over there I could just stare at nature until it went dark and continue to do so in the hut until I was ready to close the blinds. I haven't been able to do this for years
Today was not the day to lock myself out of my house, and I probably won’t get access to the spare key until 10pm. It’s too hot for this. Second time this has happened in 5 years, the timing of this one hurts.
This makes me so happy!
This is a flightless bird lol
She hasn't worked out shadows but definitely understands reflections.
The shadows thing is getting nuts. 6am and is attacking the wall lol

Bird day: for most of my holiday I stayed in a hut that a lyrebird lived right outside of. Every morning I'd get the multipack of birdsong waking me up. I'd tarry a while just to hear his full repertoire. It was beautiful.
I saw couples of lyrebirds casually strolling around the property and hopping off garden walls. Didn't have my phone on me for the most part so didn't take any photos.
I have to admit, lyrebirds are not spectacular to look at, unless male and dancing on their mound.
They're on the upper side of mid. Not much colour ordinarily, but lovely tails and a fairly sizeable and mobile bird. One of the larger birds in forested inland areas aside from emus...
I love chicken
Emoji has been changed because it's bird day!
My bird appreciation of the day is that dove that I thought was an owl (sorry bird peeps, I can't remember the sub-species or whatever the breed categorisation is called). It's been tricking me for YEARS into thinking it was some kind of broken owl. Cheeky bloody bugger
My favourite bird award goes to the magpie. Whatever sub-species we have in melbs. They can be aggressive, but they also have the capability of learning who is a friendly and doesn't need a swoop. They're remarkably smart for birds imo, and also fairly friendly once there's a bit of a rapport. Love ya maggies!
(Yeah, I know bird day mostly seems to be cantered towards the yanks. But we have some very fine birds, too, and they deserve a bit of love as well!)
I had a lovely chat with a magpie today, they're extremely friendly in my area. He was sitting on a low fence and I asked if he'd been in a fight because some of his neck feathers looked a bit shit, he seemed okay though.
I always stop and say hello to the magpies 😊
They're good little mates. I absolutely adored watching them walk around the yard hunting worms. I know they aren't the only birds that land in yards and waddle around, but in terms of flying birds in my part of Melbourne, they seem to be the only ones that routinely spent time in my front/back yard. They weren't shy either. They didn't like people getting too close, but they wouldn't fly away upon seeing you, they'd just hop back a few steps, kinda like "ayy man, keep yo distance"
Yet another reason I love them. Can't help anthropomorphising them - I do that too!
I finished off and submitted my assignment - which is about Red Wattlebirds!
Red Wattlebirds are suicidal maniacs. There's a pair that nest in my street trees - they dive bomb their own reflections in my front windows. So far the windows have been winning but it's only a matter of time.
I am not a fan. Not only are they dumb, they sound hideous, especially at 5am in the morning.
Red Wattlebirds
We have a fair few down here. Probably one of the more flighty / shy type of bird. Resident magpie is at war with them constantly. They're not competing for food or space, just having a go at each other for sport / fun seemingly.
They can be quite aggressive. A few years ago I had a good crop of apricots on my tree which were the site of an ongoing battle between a group of wattlebirds and a group of lorikeets. It would get quite noisy. In the midst of it all there was one raven that would just fly in and grab a single apriocot every day and just ignore the ongoing war.
For bird day today I am dedicating my day to this.
Ate too much fruit. Must nap....
My spirit animal:
Yesterday I noticed that the Aussie version of The Office was out so I'm guessing the NDA isn't applicable any more. But damn you Amazon Preview for making me suffer through a whole test episode of that just so that I could fill out the qualtrics survey demanding they never subject me to that trash ever again.
Hahah. It boggles my mind that anyone thought this was a good idea when we already turn out series like Utopia and Fisk.
One of my favourite things about being on a holiday is feeling like I have the time to play games like Pokemon Go. And I feel like they're little pixel souvenirs.
And thanks for the post, Baku!!
Glad you're enjoying it, and thanks for the appreciation!
Thanks baku 🙂😘
You're most welcome goonhoon
Fucking hot outside, so of course my neighbour is out there with his ancient mower.
The mower keeps cutting out and he's swearing up a storm.
I've said it before, one day (like today) I'm going to find his corpse on the lawn next to his fucking mower.
Isn't lawn mowing a restricted activity on total fire ban days? Could've sworn there was something about that
E: gave it a google, and it says it should be avoided, but obviously, "should" doesn't indicate an obligation. However it does say have some musts for dry/not green vegetation, and also says that somebody MUST carry either a water (stores pressure) fire extinguisher that's fully charged, correctly pressured, working, and has a capacity of over 9 litres, or a knapsack spray pump fully charged with water in working order with a capacity of over 9 litres
Does Mr. Neighbour have a fire extinguisher?
Hot = mows lawn Raining = waters lawn
He’s wired back-to-front
Not sure he's got wires left to be honest
I thought you were gonna find him passed out next to a hose?
If only....
yay, I have finally learnt portion control for my dinners. I just can't eat a big plate of food anymore. Now have to tackle snacking and I'm gold.
so thank you so much to the dter who suggested the aldi meal shakes. They are working well, slow but well. 🙂
Happy bird day!!!!!!!
Let's spare a moment for the poor birds in the heat today.
Not a native bird but I like sparrows. They are so tiny and so brave.
For song I love blackbirds aka thrushes. They sing around sunset and it's so lovely.
Sparrows are very cute. They are also quite clever. I once watched one at Southbank that had worked out exactly where to fly in front of the sensor to activate the doors into the food court.
now I like them even more 🙂
I've been feeding the birds on my balcony , a few sparrows will eat from my hand, one will hop on my arm or shoulder
and now the sparrows are back other birds have come back too, some wrens who like to hang with the sparrows , honey eaters, wattle birds, a few mynahs, currawongs, pigeons and doves
a whole eco system is back 🙂
and yeah. I'm feeding them, this is not the same as going to a pristine forest and feeding the local wildlife, this is a highly artificial environment and many are introduced birds , in a way they need humans
Seeing as we're doing bird pics, here's mine from Friday (sorry that it wasn't taken today but thought it was so random it warranted posting)
Birds. After cleaning and filling up the bird bath yesterday, it wasn't used :( Gonna try again today don't give up!
Big spring clean tomorrow. Looking forward to it to be honest.
Been a bit "slovenly" the last 2 weeks so this will make me feel a shit load better.
Also putting the ps5 away for a little while so I can finish off these songs. Sometimes out of sight, out of mind is best.
My appreciated bird is for the kookaburras. Particularly the one that stole bacon rind from the camp-fire and proceeded to bash it against the rocks a metre from my eyes before taking off to a nearby tree to enjoy. It then watched me eat my breakfast.
I love Kookaburras though I could do with it gout the food stealing.
I haven’t seen one in ages though.
Kookaburras are my fave. Such cheeky buggers and they always make me smile.
That laugh is pure sarcasm.
Not a bird but I’m ready to start seeing the ball and the bails fly today!!
🏏
Edit: Let the kookaburra fly!
Boland is having a blinder!!
It’s amazing, without him we’d be cooked. What a legend, 6!
I feel like some sort of dessert but I don't know what.
It's alright guys. The man's gone to get me something.
Jelly and custard 🍮
I’ve still got jelly and morello cherries.
I'd be surprised if you didn't. That bowl was huge.
Ice cream and jelly and a punch in the belly 😋
I'm tucking into a mini Christmas pud.... for dinner. Its too hot to cook and I have some leftover.
Good man. Let us know what he brings back!
It was a lemon roulade from Coles which was super sweet. Next time I'm asking for an apple turnover.
I think I'm coming down with a sore throat. Fingers crossed it is just dry air from the air conditioner combined with standard paranoia. 🤞
Edit: I don't think it's paranoia ☹️ I've booked off sick for tomorrow and am considering making some emergency jelly.
Not the clearest pic, but there were 2 rosellas in my backyard the other day. I also had 3 wattlebirds - 1 parent who was still feeding its teenagers
Plink, pause, plink, pause, plink of raindrops. Not a lot in it I think - hope we get a proper downpour.
Won't be tonight by the looks of it but quite a downpour forecast for tomorrow.
I was planning on walking to work and back to get my blood flowing but I'm a bit chickenshit doing it in heavy rain and I'll likely be on my feet for the rest of the week so maybe I'll drive...
Hard to believe it’s so hot while its so overcast and grey.
Reminds me of that first hot day in summer in December which was like this. Sunny the day before, overcast but like a fan forced oven on the day itself.
FUCK YEAH 🏏🇦🇺💚💛💚💛💚💛💚🏆
So good.
Woo hoo!!
I didn't think I was going to have a contribution to bird day, but lo and behold, a lil birdie ran on the bricks right in front of my camera!
What's the ID, bird peeps? It looks big but would've only been small in person
My guess is either some kind of small raven, or a thirsty sparrow. Maybe just a crow?
Probably a Little Raven in Melbourne.
If it’s little it might have been a blackbird. But they usually have yellow beaks.
Raven - either Little or Australian (I can never tell them apart). We don't have Crows in Vic
That’s an excellent pic!
No jelly gang🫠
I'm definitely sick - I have the air conditioner off and am sitting wrapped in a blanket. Now I'm about to head to bed. I consulted a rat who doesn't think it's covid, but it's definitely one of the plague varieties going around at the moment.
Edit: plus I replied to a comment instead of the main post, brain is definitely fuzzy. I did manage to make more jelly though, so I'll be in the jelly gang tomorrow, but right now I don't have any set jelly.
I picked up the flu which is random for this time of year. Rest up!!
represent
Nipped out to the shops for a couple of things, still foul outside. Onto season 2 of Blue Lights, such an entertaining show. Even if it kind of is copaganda. I can't get enough of those northern Irish accents. And Stevie and his lunches 🥰
One thing I've noticed since coming back is how quickly my attention span/ability to just be has gone back to shite though... I should throw my phone away, honestly.
It’s an oven out there. Just hung out the washing. It’s been 5min, I should probably go back out and pick it up, it’ll be dry by now.
I hung out 2 loads yesterday, so humid here it took the whole day and night to dry
Might have a beverage . Do some cooking.
🍻🍺 I'm off work for the next four days, so I'm also having a beverage(s)
Oh lucky 🍻. I’m taking holiday later this month. Cheers
I've been doing sewing repairs for the young seagoons and it's really hard. Much of their clothes are specialist hiking clothes and made out of hitech fibres, fibres that are hard to sew. Stretchy dense fabrics and the actual material of the fibre is hard and difficult even when using a special hardened needle.
It looks like the cool change isn't coming through until morning, like 7am. If your house is hot it could be a good day to check out your local library or see a movie or three.
Keep those fluids up! It's already 37C here at midday.
Holy shit, I had the air con on for a few hours yesterday and used 10kwh more electricity than usual
$5 just to keep the inside temp below 30 😐
Maybe that's perfectly average and expected, but that's the most electricity I've ever used in a day (at least while I've been paying the bill). Do split systems use that much?
It's already 31 inside, I don't really feel like I've got much other option but to turn it back on, but the moment it's bearable it goes straight back off :/
I used 22kw yesterday, the highest I've gotten to recently is 26kw. That was with a large split system in the lounge running all day keeping everyting in the low 20s, plus one in the bedroom running all night (plus a few hours before bed to cool everything down).
Normally I would be around 10kwh on a fairly mild day, but can go up closer to 40kwh in winter when I need a lot of heating.
Oh wow, that seems quite high! How many people to your house and how many bedrooms if you don't mind my asking?
I've got gas heating, oven/stove, and hot water, so the biggest power draw I have is the portable air con. My energy usage varies a bit, but is generally between 4-6kWh, occasionally dipping down to 3, or poking up to 8. Any more than that is abnormal for me, even if I use the dryer and aren't proactive about keeping lights off
Is this a smart meter? I wanna get one of those.
Yeah, the moment it's bearable I switch it off too. But then I wonder if turning it on and off stops being efficient at a certain point.
Yep! I think the idea is that everyone will have one by 2030. For me it actually works out well, because I have no clue where my power Maine/metre is. I've got a switchboard/circuit breaker box inside, but I don't have a metre anywhere on my property. I'm guessing they're probably all located on a wall at unit number 1 or something, as from what I can see, my neighbours don't have one either
It's pretty neat, although I can only access my usage data the day after. I'm pretty sure data is reported to them hourly, but my supplier just chooses to only tell me about it the next day. Having a smart metre also means you can get a little sensor installed that monitors your live energy usage and reports it back to your phone in near real time. You generally need to be in close proximity to it though, so it wouldn't work for me being on the other side of the lot
Well worth it though! Don't fight them if they want to install one for you!
You know that sticker on appliance that shows the electrical ratings? Look for a number that says Watts. So say your appliance is rated 500 Watts, then in one hour it will use 500wh. Divide by 1000 to get kWh. So 0.5kWh. Then you can multiply by number of hours to get the total used. Eg if it ran for 3 hours, that’s 1.5kWh. (More or less. Could by slight variations due to start up power draw, fan speeds, intensity, etc.)
Thanks, I appreciate the intention/sentiment, but I do know how energy ratings and usage works. The porty doesn't have any stickers (pretty sure it's at least a decade old, and whatever adhesive was holding the sticks on had long since disintegrated by the time I got it)
Watts are also just the product of amps x volts. I've got a smart plug in one of my boxes that I could use to determine how many V/A it's pulling and then work out wattage based on that, but I don't think it really changes much. I'm gonna use it anyway on the days like today where the weather is a bit difficult, even if probably costs about $10-15/day to run (my assumption based on yesterday's cost and running time). The "bury your head in the sand and deal with the fallout later" approach, if you will
My bird theme happening is that I saw a family of noisy miners and a magpie using the bird bath. Noisy miners have unfortunately set up camp in the surrounding trees and are monopolising the bird bath, but at least if they are here, then the bird baths in other peoples yards are free of harassment for other bird species.
That's a common issue with those sorts of birds and any really good resources, they try to keep them for themselves and drive everyone else away. If you want to provide for the smaller birds too you need to have smaller bird baths and flowering plants that provide some nectar but not too much - anything too good the big aggressive birds bully them away from. That's one of the main things I've learned so far from by Backyard Biodiversity subject.
I have mixed feelings on the miners because they are natives and it’s just their nature, but it’s a unnatural balance because of the suburban garden habitats. The magpies don’t seem too deterred, even though they get harassed at times too. I don’t have a huge amount of space but maybe I’ll look into some summer flowering plants and put a second bird bath elsewhere.
That's what happened in my back yard too. I set up a birdbath and within a disappointingly short space of time, I'm talking about an hour, I had those Indian Myna birds bullying away all the birds I sought to attract. Not wanting those pests to set up camp, I relocated it to the side way where it is now a very shallow bee drinking station (too much human activity in close proximity for birds so they don't use it).
my contribution to bird day from the beach just now:
Suburban park ibis from the other day.
Only showed up about a year ago. Spreading from the Springvale necropolis lake colony.
noooooo I just found out ethique don't do their body bars or other stuff no more. I love my pumice mint
Seems like they've done a bit of a rebrand/restructure too - and no more moisturiser. They had an awesome one that was perfect in winter.
I've started a thread on !cricket@aussie.zone
Good morning little munchkins 🤗
I guess my apartment isn't so poorly insulated. Just got home after a nice lunch out thinking I'd need to blast the AC, but I've just got the fan on me and I'm pretty comfortable!
It might also be possible that you are a lizard
My last.fm 2024 recap thing just arrived. It's less accurate than Spotify, because every now and then it'll crap out and decide to just not count an entire week's worth of music, or I'll listen to something 5 times and it only counts it twice
But anyway, some interesting stuff fin there:
I haz discovered I like wrapping packing tape around things…
Plz help. 🤣

I think the 5Ss are to do with protecting your skin from the sun, rather than heat-related illnesses.
Yeah, I suppose that makes sense. I still think that it should have covered hydration, too. Personally, I'd rate dehydration as a bigger problem than the risk of eye damage or whatever

The ED one surprised me a little and made me feel a bit sad.
My contribution to Bird Day is one of my most treasured Pokemon from Go. It was one of the first Shinys I caught.
just saw another Qute train 🥰🚞
I forgot to post something bird related! My tribute today is to the Maggies and ravens in my street, I love watching their morning antics and their little society. And the birds which raised a baby in a nest they made in the back of my staghorn. Also the pigeon that lives in the supermarket. Smart bird, it's always cool in there and there's plenty of food. They've tried to shoo it out but it's way too clever, bobs under the aisle into the next aisle away from its pursuers lol. There are black and yellow cockies that come every year exactly at the time the pine trees in the local park have young pinecones. If you're not careful you'll end up copping a projectile from above.
So Day 5 of the NY…
The space rearrangement is working really well. It is definitely is a mood booster and I somehow have started a gallery wall which I am even more excited about. Three pieces up and I can probably accommodate another 4-7 frames, depending on size and arrangement. It makes me actually want to be in the space, even if it is the dining area. (Using the dining table as a partial bar top may be also a little more enticing, haha.)
No complaints using Linux Shred. Not sure why. Last drive currently being nuked by loading the OS via USB. So far, so good. That means (as sad as it is) tower be gone tomorrow! I am also relieving myself of my giant Philips iron with its massive water reservoir that never worked quite right (it works perfectly fine, but how it steams is just odd to me). Why I hung onto it so long, I don’t know. Back to a regular sized iron (a Tefal was obtained today).
If only offloading/spring cleaning had always felt this good! Still got a bit to go, but I feel… positive.
Thinking of the birds today, I love seeing the crested pigeon (here dubbed the sprouts pigeon in this household) in the park. They just kind of look rebellious, LOL.
Love punk pigeons with their little mohawks
It must be the week for cleaning & decluttering - I’ve been sorting out the shed. I pulled all the stuff out and have been sorting through it, and ordered some storage racks today. Feeling very accomplished
I'm doing the massive spring clean this week as well. Very much looking forward to it!

I Like Birds https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=32J5jCP1z9A
The other day I saw a bird I couldn’t quite place (I don’t know all the names). It might have been a honeyeater/wattlebird but I couldn’t tell at that distance. I hope the magpies don’t drive all the other natives away.
There used to be a tawny frogmouth that would come sit on my fence hooting. Probably attracted by the mice that would be hiding in my long grass. I haven’t seen that bird in years. Maybe it ate a poisoned mouse or someone screwed with its habitat
I still have not made the custard or finished the big kitchen clean.
I have magpie pics but I/my house are in them. One shows a magpie chilling about a metre from me and not afraid.
I’ve stopped feeding them anything now because they’d begun approaching me and it’s probably good they stay cautious of humans. (And don’t start to depend on being fed.) Just the water dish now.
Holy shit. I can't watch this.
I’m watching….
Mini UFO or Solar light?
I haven't been outside in a few days and got a little confused when I saw a cat sprinting off.
Calls for a rave choon!
Not a bird contribution, sorry. But Mabel’s shenanigans this morning:
Her and her best mate at the dog park (which doubles as the local cricket ground) decided to play vigorous bitey face on the freshly painted red boundary lines. So now she’s pink. 🤦♀️
She’s very proud of her work though. I guess she’s just showing up for the Pink Test.
Gotta show support. Also I reckon Mabel would be a shoo-in for fielding on the boundaries. Might struggle to bat though - place her at 11 on the team?
It's gonna be a ripper day Mabel. 🏏💕
I like recognising people's pets. As soon as I saw the photos in my inbox, I didn't need to read your username, it was just like "yep, that's Mabel"
I still maintain Mabel is absolutely adorable
