Russia has sustained over 600,000 casualties since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Defense News reported on Oct. 9, citing senior Pentagon officials.

The accelerating losses are disproportionate with Moscow's territorial gains, a senior U.S. defense official said on Oct. 9.

"Russian losses, again both killed and wounded in action, in just the first year of the war exceeded the total of all Soviet losses in any conflict since World War II combined," the official said.

The mounting casualties at the front may hinder the Russian military's recruitment efforts, the official said, putting pressure on the Kremlin to initiate a new wave of mobilization.

1 out of every ~200 Russians, overwhelmingly young, formerly healthy men, are now seriously wounded or dead because of Putin's ill-conceived ambitions. Christ.
For reference, the last time the US lost anywhere CLOSE to that proportion of its population in war was WW2.
- And this is why the government is now restricting birth control. Need more soldiers for the grinder.
  
  I think if they drag the war out so long that kids not even conceived today are potential soldiers, then soldiers will be the least of their problems.
  
  Their birth rates are really low too 1.35 IIRC ? You need 2.1 to stay stable.

Haven't they been conscripting out of prisons for awhile already?
- Yeah but that's volunteers to get their sentence taken away. So far they haven't forced a uniform on prisoners yet. Just distant minorities.
- Maybe not even russian prisoners want to get a one way trip to the meat grinder.

I think the pentagon’s numbers give this tally significant strength.
Not to be a downer but what is Ukraine's casualties at? I'm sure this rate of loss of Russian young men is going to kneecap population levels there but I can only imagine how screwed Ukraine's will be as well.
- It's a good question. Ukraine doesn't disclose that. They're high though. There are a few estimates that vary widely and sometimes include civilian casualties. This NYT piece published today cites an unnamed American official estimating that Ukrainian casualties are "a bit more than half of Russia’s casualties, or more than 57,500 killed and 250,000 wounded." (Archive) This WSJ article from about a month ago cites an unnamed Ukrainian official putting the estimate at 80k killed, 400k wounded. (Archive)
