The best experience I've had so far is using wefwef.app. It's a PWA and from what I've heard closely resembles Apollo. I'm on Android, but my iOS friend also prefers it.

My preferred nickname was taken on Reddit, I had to use a lame one (~5-10 years ago when I was creating the account).
My obsessive personality dictates that however awesome the platform is, if I can't use netvor (without any suffixes etc.) I just don't ever really form any attachment to the platform. Normally traits like this are problematic but it probably saved me from shittons of hours of arguing with Someone wrong on the Internet, so there's the bright side. 🔆

I’d actually argue that it’s easier to get good names simply because each instance can have its own username pool. For instance, my username could also be used on other instances by other people. Me creating this account doesn’t stop someone from creating the same name elsewhere.

I wouldn't enable 2fa yet either there are some bugs, and the code it generated for me didn't work and locked me out of my account for a good bit. I'm not sure why but the 2fa link didn't work for me so I copied the secret out of the url and put it in my authenticator but it never worked. Just fyi.
Lemmy uses a SHA256 digest for its TOTP codes.
Basically every other service (and therefore most authenticator apps) use SHA1.
So although you provide the right secret, you get a different code because it's derived from a different hashing mechanism
