The UI of Youtube is actually not bad. What is bad is how the search function has gone to shit, constant promotion of youtube Shorts taking up half the screen, and the algorithm getting steadily worse at recommending videos.
The interface itself is pretty easy to navigate.
imo loading several video recommendations while im just scrolling through comments is very bad, especially because the API calls are seperate and load both sides seperately. huge waste of bandwith when im only interested in the text, which is barely any bandwidth
Youtube 2012 loaded in 1 second on a 5MBit line. HTML, CSS and JS for a page was a few hundred kilobytes.
You can profile the current "responsive" version in your browser. It might not look horrible but it's a technical abomination. I doubt it'll even load anymore in a browser from 2012.
I do feel like the mobile app has been getting progressively buggier over the last year. Maybe it's just me but the mini-player has been glitching out for months and other weird stuff has been getting more prevalent like yesterday I had the YouTube play button icon stretched and distorted as an overly across the whole app until I restarted it and creating a queue didn't work until I started a new video manually.
I hate the app so much, it always starts to play random shit while I'm just browsing/searching.
I couldn't tell you. I ditched it for GrayJay since it was in alpha and couldn't be happier.
I really don't like how hitting the back button minimizes the currently playing video instead of going back to the previous played video, personally
https://www.youtube.com/results?searchquery=REPLACETHISQUERY&sp=CAI%253D
this string isn't too bad. there are some others but this is my default query string.
You forgot Quora. That site used to be semi-useful. These days I can never tell whether I’m reading an actual answer to the question or just some random recommended post that’s been shoved in in between.
Right? Whenever I go on Quora I have to double-check whether the response I'm reading is actually the answer or just another post
It turned into Yahoo Answers when JBP promoted it.
I think Quora is on another level. It's a weird zombie site these days
Just use a 3rd party a....h, crap.
The discord UI was great. And then they made it ugly and slow as fuck.
Honestly, I find it pretty decent. I only wish I could see timestamps per message on the new UI
Personally I've found the recent change to be a few steps forwards in some places and a few steps backwards in others
I've been using aliucord
It’s actually optimized for them. The goal is to get users to spend time and see ads etc. The UI is not made for us users.
There are no ads in discord, there's really no point to force the new UI on everyone.
Yet
Well: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/04/discord-starts-down-the-dangerous-road-of-ads-this-week/
Edit: it’s more loot box stuff.. but it’s step one
Just like cellphones.
The secret ingredient is enshittification.
Haha, you think those are bad? Try any professional tools, like CAD's, DAW's, or 3d modelling software.
Or, even worse, any internal corporate software, the bigger and the older the company is, the better... at being the worst, that is.
Or. actually, just go to an any airline's office to buy a ticket and witness the atrocity they have on their monitors. No, those are not blue screens of death. That bunch of gibberish is the actual UI. And the only way to interact with it is by typing in commands that read like something that Lovecraftian creatures would sound like.
Command line isn't actually bad UI for professionals. It's way faster than using a mouse.
Command line isn't bad, but that isn't quite it. It's a terminal, but not really command line, think more like htop as compared to gnu utils. And they use it not because it's efficient, but because it dates back to where there was no other option. It's extremely convoluted, and if you've ever had problems with airlines before (mainly baggage) - chances are, it's because somebody messed something up in this system.
Are you a zoomer? Command line is way better than a billion little buttons
I haven't tried many CAD softwares but AutoCAD has really intuitive UI. I used to be able to find most things by just thinking what tab it should be based on what it is. It actually inspired me to learn better programming and software design to make something intuitive. I haven't used it in years since I came to Linux so as long as they haven't changed it.
Those systems are so much faster and more reliable than the bubbly shit we have now. All that crap on the screen is what we call "information density." It's designed for people who work with it several hours a day and understand it, not for some random to be able to learn in 15 minutes. It has a longer learning curve, but is way more efficient in the end.
I agree. That stuff tends to be much more stable than the newy swipe-and-drag interfaces. These designs are basically unbreakable. I dig that so.
Anyone who thinks that these three have the worst UI possible has never had to deal with a really bad UI. Try Sharepoint on for size. Or Azure. Or Jira. And there's likely still way worse stuff than those.
I hate sharepoint so much.
For a tool whose purpose is to share stuff, I sure have a hard time finding things in it.
Azure is so bad!
Jira got too useful for its own good.
Microsoft stuff is always ... very consistently microsoft lol it almost feels like they tried too hard to make it looks simple on the surface, and then ended up shoving all the rest randomly in drawers/cabinets/boxes/wherever...
I'm not seeing "Amazon" or the plethora of online shopping stores that have followed in its footprint of complete and utter shit. To this day, I can't understand how Amazon became so big with a user interface so fucking awful but goes to show it doesn't actually fucking matter.
Amazon UI is so bad if you type 'subs' in the product search it auto-suggests 'subscriptions on my account' and a dozen 'subscribe and save' variations because people wind up using the product search trying to find that stuff.
Oh, I had that problem too, try changing your search to "bottoms" 👍
Yall must not work in manufacturing.
How many of your machines use Comic Sans font on the operator touchscreen?
And how many times has someone had to pull the PLC programming to resize the button clip art jpegs to fix and overlap that caused the machine to run 2 different functions at the same time if they tapped too close to one side?
Let’s add google drive.
I hate their ui.
Can someone tell me how to force Google drive to show me folders instead of files on start? Why would I ever need to look at a mess of files? I spend time organizing them into folders a reason, no thanks Google I really wanted them haphazardly thrown in my face.
Is this the setting you're talking about?
The worst thing they did with the UI which OneDrive also does, is take the universally understood concept of "Saving" and make it mean 5 different things within the same program.
Youtube is not bad, but Discord makes me feel like a boomer.
I really don't get Discord. Why would I want all of my chats in different top-level sections? I much prefer just having a list of groups that I am a part of. I do like sorting them into priority and low priority but that is all I want and it is independent of "server".
Discord doesn't make me feel like a boomer, but only because boomers would never burn down a corporate office.
Discord always had the worst UI I've ever seen. Followed by Snapchat.
Discord's new mobile app is fucking unusable sometimes. Sometimes I just stuck with that add picture pop up and nothing I do will make it go away.
Not to mention that all of the controls disappear off the screen the second you don't click on them so you can't just mute yourself conveniently you have to tap the screen twice to bring up the icon to click so you can mute yourself but sometimes it doesn't recognize when you click on the screen.
I'm just impressed with how unbelievably terrible that app has gotten. I didn't even think about it before, It was just simple to use.
Tapping a notification doesn't take me to the message, but rather to the DMs list, where the app promply gets stuck, so I have to restart it.
It's not only horrible, it's straight up buggy. What I don't understand is why they wanted to make their app a shitty Facebook Messenger clone in the first place.
It was horrible before. On the other hand nobody should use Discord, I wish the bad UI would turn off people to use it at all.
coming from slack I actually found discord rather intuitive, snapchat on the other hand...I never understood what kind of freek would want to take a selfie the first thing they open a social app
GIMP
How do you have these listed and not the myriad of FOSS products that are garbage to use.
Y'all remember mumble? Easy peasy compared to discord amirite?
GIMP looks a lot nicer than it did 20ish years ago, but it's still really really bad.
I can somewhat forgive FOSS tools for having poor UI, but GIMP is one tool that really should have some love poured into the UI and how usable it is for power users.
GIMP does look better now, but I feel like its workflow is actively working against the user experience.
Tip: Type / in GIMP for a command palette
I know this is a slightly different category, but Snapchat's UI is absolutely the worst- far worse than all of these. It's my go-to UI to pick on.
Reddit must have an entire QA department dedicated ro making the UI shitty. Like how can you make a shit ui even worse. It can't be an accident, you gotta be doing it on purpose.
For YouTube, use FreeTube, Tubular or LibreTube if you like native clients or Piped and Invidious if you prefer a website.
It's best not to use Reddit at all, but if you need it for some reason, check out Libreddit or this site
Unfortunately not much can be done to avoid Discord's terrible UI other than not using it. The Matrix protocol and Element client are pretty nice alternatives.
Discord is easy, I just it for voice chat with friends exclusively. The rest of discord is what you get when you explain forums to someone, bash them over the head 1000 times, then let them program a forum. I could not think of a single thing they could make even worse.
Piped and Invidious, I have tried dozens of servers of them. They just don't work if I want to watch at 1080p. I have not tried the others though.
EDIT: I just tried FreeTube. It works great. Thanks.
iv.datura.network and invidious.fi have always worked for me, even at 1080p
You forgot Spotify
Bro Spotify is number one there.
Wait what are the big gripes with the Spotify UI? It works well for my purposes so genuinely curious
I've been using Spotify since it came out and I'm starting to feel it's time to move on soon. My main gripe is that the UI is getting less user-focused and more interested in pushing content and shitty social media-like features. It's getting bloated and annoying. Plus of course whatever major labels are pushing gets weighted in search results and recommendations. Just a few days ago I got a marketing pop-up ("what QUESTION would you like music to answer for you?!") which feels like the last straw. I paid for premium, I know what I want to listen to, just get out of the way. And if you absolutely must have some shitty "reels/shorts", give me the option to turn them off. (I see my kids wanting to listen to a song, getting distracted by some crappy flashing video, swiping around for a while, then exiting the app out of boredom. Luckily they have parents that can help them understand music from a different perspective than 20-second endorphin flashes.)
I guess I'll just go to Bandcamp full time and piracy if I want to listen to something before I buy a physical copy.
I still dont understand why they had to make playlists/albums/artists/etc “filters” or hashtags or whatever you call them, and blend all the different types of items in a single page...
Amazon:
its been a while since i last saw this meme
Discord was a train wreck from the off
Not sure where the discord hate is coming from (besides the new mobile app). If you're someone who has to use Teams for work, surely you'd kill to switch to Discord instead.
I honestly like the new mobile experience. It seems more tidy.
When people say that it's "literally unusable" I'm like "what the fuck were you using it for?"
I have always hated discord's interface. Just because something else is worse doesn't give Discord a free pass.
Thank god someone mentioned Teams. I don’t have it on mobile anymore, but the desktop app is insane.
Spotify joins the chat
It was quite alright. Limited but ok. Then they started shuffling things around and made everything cluttered and cumbersome and ugly and by now it's seems to be tradition with every update.
I like Spotify's UI? Though wish that the mobile app just had a dedicated "Like Songs" button at the bottom.
Completely unusable for me on PC. I really don't get why I've to drag the fucking portion where my playlists and albums are so I can see them all in a bigger size.
So who has a good UI for comparison?
All of the apps that existed before the API changed (Reddit specifically)
Bring back when companies wanted their users using their software, not forcing only one channel of usage.
The other day I went Tumblr to make sure that I'd turned off their opt-out AI data mining and literally could not find the login page. I eventually had to use the URL in my password DB. Turns out I'd deleted my account already. Good riddance.
Oh yeah, I forgot to do that when I read about it the other day. Thank you for the reminder!
I remember the first day I got on Discord. My friend said, "it's like IRC." Yeah, the chat part. Once I figured out how the fuck I could get to the place to chat with my friend.
None of those have such a bad UI, if you think those are bad then you probably never had to use atrocious apps for work!
I make the atrocious apps for work.
Let me tell you, every out of place button or weirdly niche function placed prominently on the main screen is the fault of some bastard who won't buy the system from us until it's just as ugly as their old system, and they've got just enough money for us to have to give a fuck about it.
No you don't when I say proprietary I don't mean the company hire a different company to make the app, I mean dog shit apps done by the company dev team that does not care at all about how it looks and just care to be functional. Some of those UI are so atrocious that some of the team members rather do api calls through terminal then use them!
Sounds like Stockholm syndrome if you ask me. Reddit UI is definitely terrible, especially on mobile. YouTube and Discord are marginally better but seem to be busy trying to find new ways to make it worse every other week.
Spotify should also be on that list BTW.
Well probably reddit is worst but on pc I use RES for Reddit and on mobile I used Reddit Relay now I don't use Reddit on mobile anymore cause the official app I consider dog shit. That's the reason I'm on lemmy now!
I don't know what the problem with Discord is. It isn't that different than it was before and it's actually easier to navigate now. Maybe it's just because I hadn't been using it much before the change?
They changed the mobile app, it used to be like the desktop app (standard desktop chat gui) but adapted for phones, now it's different and kinda sucks (not because it's different, but because it's janky and buggy and can take 5-10 sec to load anything other than the channel you were in when you last closed it)
I've only ever used the mobile version.
It isn't that different > that's problem number one
It's easier to navigate > the same way the first step towards a destination 10km away technically makes you closer to your destination
They all want to give you just enough control to make you think you chose what their algorithm recommended for you.
YouTube isn't even following material design 3...
The one competition I can win against all big corporations
The competition in making the worst ui?
Yes
What's bad about discord?
The app has gone absolutely down the shitter after they decided it should mirror other shitty apps instead of the desktop experience. Desktop I'd argue isn't as much worsened, but there's still annoying details like the omnipresent gift button.
The new UI on mobile app is awful. Less intuitive, slower and buggy. I don't know how they did this, but sometimes it takes even a few seconds to switch between views (eg. from servers to DM)
Switching between servers and messages is my biggest gripe. It feels awkward.
Hate how it replaced forums. Compared to forums it's the absolute worst. I will never not hate it. It's alright for basic voice chat with friends. Anything beyond that? Just shoot me in the knee instead pls
The fact that it exists and that people use it for more than just video chats.
Trash UI
Discord's UI is bad?
There was recently an update to the mobile app that was very poorly received
Discord user of 5 years, use it daily, I've had the update for a week or more, and I'm still fumbling with buttons to find what I'm looking for. It's really badly done.
One button left called "Watch Ad" and it spans the whole screen.
i like the YouTube ui excluding the channel page
Honestly discords UI is pretty good its just weirdly missing some features entierly.
Does not apply to the mobile app
I've been using Discord since 2016.
I just found out on Wednesday that you can group servers by dragging and dropping them on top of each other to make a folder.
Makes me wonder how many of their quality of life features there are that most aren't aware of.
My only real gripe with discord (off the top of my head anyway) is that why tf when the "new" button pops up does it just scroll down the server list instead of just actually taking me to the server and the post causing the notification
It doesn't even actually ever go to the right spot on the server list it just goes way down and then I have to usually go back up to get to it
If the aim is to drive users towards brainless engagement with arbitrary content, they're great.
But for UX they're dogwater.
add whatsapp web to the list
Also WhatsApp mobile apps
But it's like the most basic chat app? List of chats on the left and the rest is your current chat. How is that bad UI?
crashes every damn time. requires logs out every 15 days, takes too to load chats. many actions only appear when you hover over there message(no indication otherwise).
telegram on the other hand is quite fast.
but yeah, most of these points are bad ux and not ui
Github's ui can honestly be pretty goofy sometimes. I feel like I'm navigating the website for the first time every time I use it, which is multiple times a week. Where's that setting? Which settings panel is it in? Where do I find that repo that I contribute to but don't own?
Looks like someone never tried to use Skype UI back in the day. It was different from, and substantially worse than, all the other messaging and voice programs out there.
Dude Skype was so terrible. Good riddance
Reddit was by far the worst.
Hulu on Smart TVs wins the race by a mile.
Clearly, you’ve never used Paramount+
Spotify tried making their UI look like Instagram or tick tock. It was a push update change with no way to revert to normal. What you'd normally see on the screen where there was multiple pieces of information was now a shitty video clip previewing the play list or title being suggested. Everything was moved around.
I used it once to go to work. I was receiving my subscription for free from a friend. I called my friend to tell him that I deleted my account because I couldn't change the UI back to normal. I pay for a tidal subscription now.
Tbh Youtube UI feels great
Steam, tho?
I just started TemTem and the UI there is just CLUNKY.
Mozilla should be there, right in the middle.
Mozilla's UI is completely fine?
Tbh, firefox’s hamburger menu is still pretty dumb. To my knowledge it has no shortcut, it is not configurable and can’t be removed from the toolbar. Right at the top it has with bold text sync, whether you use it or not. It has this stupid animation when it shifts to submenus. Another button that can’t be removed is the extensions button.
But well … chromium doesn’t even allow to customize the toolbar in the first place.
I think that bookmarking to a specific folder is a bigger pain than it needs to be
"Proton" FF UI sucks badly. It convinced me to move elsewhere.
Ok so what exactly is bad about it?
Which software? If you are talking about Firefox. You can customize it easily as you want using Firefox-CSS.

I remodelled my baby's mobile for exactly this reason. Seemed stupid to have the animals face up when baby is underneath, so I turned them round and made them detachable so baby could pull them off and play with them too.
