  • @gamedeviancy I decided to change the way how I save my notes. More specifically: Markdown

I got accustomed to it on spezzit FWIW, even without knowing about it in the first place, but then it felt so natural. I even use it here on Friendica, despite it being mostly relied on BBCode.

Now, how do I enjoy it? There are certain apps that save your notes as Markdown files in any folder of your choosing. You can then sync that folder through a cloud storage provider or through Syncthing so you can have your notes available on any device. And that's it. If I do not like an app (even on one device) I switch to another. My notes stay with me an I can read them even in a normal text editor.

I did not encrypt my notes, but since these are just regular files, I assume you can use something like VeraCrypt to add the folder containing the notes in there and move them that way.

  • Additionally, all Google Photos users on Android and iOS will get 10 Magic Editor saves per month. To go beyond this limit, you'll need a Pixel device or a Premium Google One plan (2TB and above).

    ... Really?

  • @maculata Respecting human rights like in that same Western Europe, I guess?

  • @maculata No, what you said is double-folded racist:

    1. It assumes all Roma people steal - which is not true, there are great people of Roma origin that contributed greatly to the society, but the situation this minority went through along the history put it more to the edge of the societies and made them more exposed to criminal activity.
    2. It assumes that all Romanian people are Roma people who steal and scam people - so, as a Romanian myself, thanks for making me a thief or a scammer I guess? :)
  • @maculata This racist take of yours has zero link to the news in question.

  • @tardigrada but... but... they said Russian sanctions don't work! /s

  • @v9CYKjLeia10dZpz88iU he should be able to post here, provided the instance is not blocking Threads. That's how you could possibly ping him. Otherwise, maybe raising an issue could help.

  • @AGuyAcrossTheInternet well, we know from the article that the first result is the official account. The second is a bird site bridge, but wtf is the third one?!?

  • @iamnotarobot Lemmy itself does not allow you to follow people, that's why you cannot see him (unless he posts/comments something on Lemmy).

Kbin is the closest thing to Lemmy that allows you to follow individual persons.

    @hedge

  • @thingsiplay are you referring to the credibility of the information itself? That does not depend on this. They can say whatever they want, whether the server is self hosted or not.

The credibility of the information is given by those who verify what these people said.

  • Wouldn't it have been better to just selhost an instance? Like, they'd have more control...

  • @1984 That is because of the purpose of those networks. On more general purpose networks like Reddit it is not uncommon for people to simply take advantage of the anonymous system in order to farm karma by posting stuff that is simply not true.

And I'm saying this as a person who genuinely liked Reddit at first, because of the reasons you mentioned.

And it probably was like that before.

But things got a bit more complex. Even on LinkedIn and Facebook, while you should theoretically be public, many people are chosing not to. While on Reddit, you could clearly recognize some people, even public persons.

Even so, the issue is more complex than that of anonymity. It's more about motives and other things, and anonymity does not ipso facto bring the truth, no matter how socially acceptable is it.

I tend to view most of the stuff that is posted online nowadays as rather a personal opinion of the poster - which can be true, or not. You decide.

  • Anonymity enables you to speak the truth if you want, but it also enables you to lie whatever, if you want. No one can hold accountable an anonymous person if their lies produce something tragic.

While people speaking openly under their identity are more likely to speak the truth when they do it, as they have much more to lose if they're caught lying.

  • No, I just did.

  • I kinda dislike the word as well. Makes it seem like it's sort of a separate and special side of the Fediverse, when it isn't. It's just as interconnected and interoperable with other Fediverse software like Mastodon (microblogging) or Friendica (macroblogging) the same way as others are. In fact, here I am, replying to you from Friendica.

Imo people could just call them as they are: bulletin boards. Or just something involving groups, idk (because that's what they are, mostly).

  • The Fediverse is the Fediverse by not being Meta. You are arguing for destroying the Fediverse for everyone by waving Meta in.

By waving Meta or Meta users? If it's the latter, I do not see anything wrong. Regular instance moderation still applies.

My point is that the focus should be on user growth of the regular Fediverse, so that Meta would have a harder time applying EEE and making an actual impact with it. (De)federation of Threads should be less of an important topic. But user growth should be the numero uno priority.

Those are my 2c on this. Hope I made myself clear.

Why do you keep putting my and others' @ in your messages? If that's a your instance thing it's weird.

Yes, I'm on Friendica, and this is the default behavior, sorry. This seems to be a way to be compatible with Mastodon, which uses tags to notify people of new replies (silly, I know, but someone at Mastodon decided that this is the way to go).

When replying to someone, I usually write the comment after the 1st tag because it's easier and makes more sense in such a discussion. Sorry if that bothered you. I am now on my PC and I can delete them easier 😁

  • @FfaerieOxide Tell them to join the Fediverse from the Fediverse 😀

Like, simply, if you tell them that they can access all the content they want on Threads (because that's why they're there), while not being there, and also see it demoed from you, the person already on the non-Meta Fediverse, they are more likely to make the switch, especially if they encounter any regular issue like being wrongly banned or having network issues.

Hell, even if they create backup accounts here, it's still a partial win for us - they can switch back any time back and forth and see what fits them better. ;)
