  • America is a decent place if you put your blinders on and worry about yourself.... and don't get sick. In America, you get sick and you go bankrupt. Some places in the world you get sick and you die. 🤷‍♂️ People in the US are pissed off because the problems we have are obvious, easy to fix, and the people in charge make blatantly shitty decisions because they stand to profit off of them. Unchecked capitalism has corrupted every branch of the government. And since the leaders are the ones that have to regulate it and they profit off of it, they won't change it. The elections are actually lies. And there are people that try to say we are an elite, premier example of democracy and the best country in the world. We are not that. The upper half of this country is broken and it's squeezing the middle and lower class until we pop, for profit.

The decision making people in this country are selfish twats. They would be voted out but gerrymandering and electoral colleges (that they control) prevent the people from actually making the decision. Our elections are a farce.

But if you don't pay attention to those things and you decide to just keep your head down, work, pay rent, consume like they want you too, it's OK. Keep your head out of the news or you just get pissed off and ashamed.

  • If the bill was purely a tictok ban that would be questionable enough. But the bill is SO MUCH MORE THAN THAT. Also, every app in America does the same shit. Just because they are capitalist America and not communist China doesn't make it better. Unless of course, you are a politician that benefits monetarily if the American company prevails.

  • Never really thought about that. Hmm. I mean, it's GE, a somewhat reputable company, but apparently they were just bought out by a company in China. But it goes through my network, communicates with a cloud service, who communicates with the app on my phone. It would seem possible that whoever runs that cloud service has the ability to do whatever they want in my network through my fridge.

I run a raspberry pi for some automation in my house and use tailscale as a VPN so I can access it as a server when I'm not home. As long as I can trust tailscale, it is encrypted straight from the raspberry pi to my phone. There is no middle man. But having that cloud service for the fridge app is something I need to research.

  • I don't know if you were old enough to pay for cable when that was normal. But I have never felt so ripped off as I did when I was paying $100/month for 50 channels when 10 of them were news channels, 10 of them were church channels, 15 of them were shopping channels, 10 of them were in Spanish, and the other 5 I might watch sometimes but 95% of what was on was junk and they ALL played more commercials than actual content.

I went from that to piracy. Then the streaming services came and they became more convenient. I am more than ready to raise the black flag again and dig my peg leg out of the closet.

  • I could maybe see some uses for a fridge on wifi. The only useful things it does is notify me if the temp rises beyond a point or if the door is left open for a really long time. As far as the temp rising without the door open the only cause is either the fridge failed ( It better fucking not) or the power went out. If the power goes out, so does my router so....

  • I usually just articulate to them exactly the messed up the thing is that they are doing in a way that they have to aknowlage it. Then they have a choice, they can either say oh, I'm sorry I didn't mean to do that and fix it. 99% of people don't like having to aknowlage they are an asshole. They would rather you think they are stupid, not an asshole. OR, they say suck my balls and do it anyway. At that point all options are on the table.

  • Only thing I would change is I would have bought the one with the feeder scanner. Scanning a multipage document is a pita. Mine doesn't automatically clean the heads. I have to tell mine to do it. And it gives me a warning that it wastes ink if you do it unnecessarily. Mine is old though. I got it when they were brand new. Maybe they changed some things. But maybe look into it? If you don't use it that often it might be worth changing the setting to make it not do that automatically (if possible) and just do it when you use it. But, like I said I use mine ony a few times a year. Your use case may be different and they may have changed the way it cleans/flushes the heads.

  • I was just using it as an example because I just figured it out on my fridge (it's useless). I was just trying to figure out if I would be going backwards 10 years if I switched, that was just the first thing that came to mind as an example.

  • It is sad, but through the events of the last few years (Reddit, Twitter, politics) companies have realized they can do whatever they want. While they will lose a significant portion of users, the mass majority will stay. The ones that leave are the ones they can't abuse and they don't want them anyway. Profit is better taking advantage of the complacent and losing the activists than the other way around.

Anywho, I will move to Firefox just like I moved to lemmy. Although I'm not sure moving to Firefox actually fixes anything other than giving Google less money. Now I just need to figure out how to have a phone without apple or Google getting a peice.
