My top genre was "indie québécois" and it placed me in Québec, so it's at least smart enough to figure that out.
This headline broke my brain. I know what Spotify is but not "Spotify Wrapped" so I kept reading it like my Spotify had wrapped something but "Place" next to it just would not compute.

I have an account that was used for very limited streaming to a couple of artists. Spotify placed it at Estonia for some reason. None of the artists I listened to are even close to the general area.
It's not based on the artist's locations, but where the listeners for the artists are.

Oh ok. Either way, I don't think any of my top artists has a lot of fans there. lol. But if spotify says so, then so be it.
Edit: I use that account to test music from artists that I manage the distribution for. So I can literally see the demographics of listeners from the distribution platform and Estonia is not even in the top 20 of countries where listeners come from.

When I used to pirate off SoulSeek I was a lot more limited in what I listened to, but Spotify is more than just a music service as it acts as a reliable way to discover new and old music to your liking.

Convenience, not needing a dedicated MP3 player, music discovery via algorithms, being able to play stuff you haven't already downloaded (ex: playing music at a gathering with friends is a lot more fun when anyone can just request basically any song imaginable and load it within seconds). These are my personal "excuses" anyway.
I don't and have never paid for Spotify with the idea I was supporting artists in doing so, but I still find it kinda funny that artists not getting paid well is your justification for not paying at all. Like I said I'm under no illusion that any artist I listen to is getting a significant payout from my streaming, and I'm very pro-piracy as well, but I do support artists I like through direct album/ticket/merch sales, or even via Patreon. Some of these artists I probably never would have discovered if it weren't for my addiction to the Discover Weekly playlist Spotify spits out for me. I wish more people would do this though, especially for smaller acts.
Also just an aside, but I feel like toning down the snark might get your point across better.
I mean my thing is like how much music do you need to have "on you" at all times? I've got 130 mp3s on my phone and that's just under half a gig. So you can have an easy 250 songs (16 hours worth) for just a gigabyte of local storage. It's pretty easy to download junk and if you really like an artist guess what, you already have all your music locally so when you get a tasty wav not a single thing has to change about how you listen to music.
I personally cannot imagine having my whole collection depend on a service like this. I use musical streaming for discovery (on free plans), and the actual collection is all local.
Also I use Yandex Music because its recommendations just work for me. Tried Spotify several times but the algorithm just was consistently not getting it. Not to mention it wanted you to enable DRM and was frustratingly slow compared to other applications I use.

Well, and Spotify doesn't even give you such an option on the other hand. Only desktop and smartphone, probably wouldn't allow one that is perma-offline, and only in the official proprietary app/webapp.
10 a month to rip unlimited 320 mp3s of anything they have on the service. Seems like a pretty good "excuse" to use it for me.
Torrenting music is bullshit, soulseek is much better but still has massive gaps. Unless you are a part of a good private tracker then the Spotify price is a fucking bargain for all the files you could have......
Also you bitch about them not giving over revenue or whatever but then torrent your music and don't buy any....
I have zero issues with piracy and have a gigantic media server full of pirated content but I don't see how you square "company being hostile to artists and revenue sharing" with "I better pirate this music instead"
I subscribe to Spotify because it's convenient as fuck and has 99.9% of the music I want to listen to (and podcasts). Pirating music is a huge pain in the ass these days even with stuff like lidarr and private trackers.
I conveniently download tracks from Yandex Music from Inspect -> Network. What is not there, I get from Youtube. I appreciate streaming for music discovery (Spotify in particular was meh for that though), but having my actual collection just there and not locally? I can't really even comprehend that tbh, that seems limiting and inconvenient, not to mention lack of ownership.
