Do any of you use any other fediverse platform(s) other than Lemmy (ex. Pixelfed, Mastodon, etc.)? If so, then please tell us what your experience has been like.

Disclaimer: I administrate multiple Sharkey instances and am one of the project maintainers, so I'm likely quite biased. Please take my opinions with a grain of salt!

1. I've used Mastodon, Akkoma, and various Misskey forks (Calckey, FireFish, and now Sharkey). The former felt very much like a corporate platform, complete with the "polished feel" you'd expect. Someone unfamiliar could easily mistake it for Twitter. Akkoma is quite the opposite - it feels like an indie software hosting forgotten subcultures in a quiet corner of the internet. Misskey-based software is somewhere in the middle, and feels more like an MMO than a social network sometimes.
2. Mastodon moderation is clearly geared towards structured and (semi-)professional moderation teams. The mod tooling supports coordination between multiple moderators and records detailed audit logs for quick catch-up on a particular user's history of staff interactions. Akkoma, again, feels like moderating a classic PHP forum backend. The tooling options are either high-level and barebones, or low-level but extremely powerful. Misskey forks vary, a lot. Vanilla Misskey has relatively poor moderation support, and is clearly meant for communities with a fairly "hands-off" approach. Calckey/FireFish improve this somewhat, and Sharkey has put moderation as a key focus with support for granular restrictions beyond just "silence or suspend". Community wise, I feel that Mastodon users tend to over-report, and Mastodon admins under-moderate. Akkoma users rarely report anything, but admins set up intricate MRF rules to enforce detailed restrictions and limits. Misskey users report about as much as Mastodon users, while admins often over-moderate and jump directly to instance-level restrictions in response to minor user-level issues.
3. I do, at least in general. The quality of moderation on fedi is a mixed bag. A few instances do very well, some do well enough, and many more just moderate the bare minimum or not at all. I regularly see users complain of harassment from sources that have been known for years. No qualified moderation team should allow federation with poa.st, for example, and yet many do. But Beehaw's staff have shown a commitment to their roles, and the community has consistently backed them up with reliable reporting and a solid effort to maintain the community health. I think our people could do very well in the larger fediverse space.

My social media consumption looks roughly like this:

• Mastodon - 60%
• Pixelfed - 15%
• Loops - 10%
• Lemmy - 10%
• Reddit - 3%
• Facebook - 2%

1. Performance:

• Mastodon - Is a competitor.
• Pixelfed - Almost there.
• Loops - Not there, yet. Has potential.
• Lemmy - Not there, yet. Has potential.

2. Moderation:

• Mastodon - Solid
• Pixelfed - Solid.
• Loops - Seems solid. (Not sure if it is actually solid or just lack of users).
• Lemmy - Seems solid. (I don't use it enough to make an honest comparison, but I have not come across anything objectionable to date).

3. Beehaw Improvement

• Honestly, I use lemm.ee and federate out to other instances. Most of the time, I do not even pay attention to where the post originates. I do this because early on there was talk of Beehaw defederating from all other instances and at that time the content just wasn't there. Not sure where Beehaw is on that stance today or if that is something they are still working towards. Then, I tried kbin and unfortunately it imploded. Then, landed on lemm.ee.
• But, I use Lemmy so infrequently, that I don't have much input on improvement. I think it just suffers from the same pain points as other fediverse organizations: user adoption and content creation.

Other platforms no. Did not use the other commercial ones either. I am was primarily a forum user and a Reddit user.

Beehaw is fine. Primary issues are breadth and depth of content which is a user base thing.

I used to use Mastodon, but there's nobody there. I couldn't find anyone interesting

I've used Mastodon, I feel that it has the same issue that a lot of fediverse social media platforms have vs the big corporate ones, that nobody that I know is on them haha. Which is annoying, I like the setup a whole lot more since they tend to be more designed around being usable platforms for communication instead of just being a way for algorithms to shove content in your face all day.

Lemmy really suits me but I also use Pixelfed.

I would say Lemmy, Pixelfed, Bookwyrm and Loops are direct replacements as they’re easy to use.

Matrix and Mastodon could be made to be more straight forward to use.

Neodb could use a bit more languages.

Friendica needs an iPhone app and more instances.

Peertube needs better instance federation and video embeds.

Flohmarkt instances need more countries supported.

I've used Loops and I use Matrix.

Loops kinda isn't good... Though that isn't necessarily its fault. There just isn't much worth scrolling through on it. But it also does nothing to show what's popular or relevant to what you like, either. No way to curate it yourself. It's just the newest thing at the top and so on, and a search function.

Matrix is dope. It's basically Discord, but not stupid.

How do you feel the platform performs compared to corporate ones?

As a user, I think it still has some way to go to reach parity with Facebook, and some features likely could be impossible to implement as they require tracking and gathering user data en-masse (imo). But it still got a thing or two in its sleeves, and those things also keep me here too, besides the federation, freedom and privacy ones.

For example, I just discovered I can send my posts on email as well to whatever person I want, which makes the whole thing highly usable even if people aren't there.

There are some bugs that might put people off, and Friendica as a platform might seem to have a higher learning curve too (I really got into it after watching some videos on yt), but this is with all the Fediverse platforms I guess? idk

How do you feel moderation is handled?

I never did moderation for it.

Do you believe the people of Beehaw (admins, moderators and users) could do a better job? If so, then why?

I think UI wise, as being an alternative to Facebook, Friendica is possibly the best Fediverse platform out there, not only are the features and the capabilities (text formatting pretty much everywhere, a calendar with events, RSS feeds straight into your main feed, plugin options etc.), but it just makes it easier to tell if a post that I'm seeing is a top-level or just a comment, if it's from a group or just posted by a person etc.

My advice would be to try it and see what it is up to. The admin of lemmy.world (and also mastodon.world) also set up an instance on friendica.world, and it quickly became pretty much the no. 1 Friendica instance. 😁

Plus, the devs of the platform are very open to suggestions and provide very comprehensive reasons if they reject a certain feature request.
