  • Actually they weren't. Even at the height of their popularity the Nazis 'only' got 39% of the vote. They never had a majority. The reason Hitler got to power was, shocker: the conservatives handed it to him by making him chancellor. They rather worked with fascists than socialists and communists. This is not to say that they liked Hitler, but they figured they could appease him and control him somehow. Sounds familiar, doesn't it? All these people who would 'never support democrats' and thereby gave the keys to the kingdom to Donald fucking Trump.

Well, anyway, they couldn't control him. When Hitler became chancellor the first thing he did was dissolve the Reichstag and pass the Enabling Act, which gave him the power to pass laws by decree (in stead of needing to go through parliament).

Well that was the beginning of the end. In quick succession he removed freedom of the press; he used the Reichstag fire as a reason to suspend the constitution, with the Reichstag Fire Decree, thus taking away civil rights: No more habeas corpus, no more freedom of assembly, no more freedom of expression, no more legal limits on house searches, confiscations, etc. He made unions illegal, he stripped German Jews of their citizenships, he banned all political parties except his own, the list goes on and on.

All of this was done legally. He used to law to turn a relatively progressive republic into a genocidal regime. It can absolutely happen again and it can absolutely happen in the U.S. - we are seeing it happen in real time.

  • Can I ask? Why does Musk suddenly have this authority? "DOGE" isn't even a real Department, right? And also, Musk hasn't been elected or officially confirmed for any government position. Why the fuck is he giving orders and leading departments and having any power whatsoever over the U.S. Treasury and such? I don't understand how this works. Why doesn't the U.S. have any... I don't know, safeguards against this sort of shit? It's absolutely bonkers to watch this unfold from across the pond.

Musk just walked up, said "I'm in charge now" and everyone's just complying? Please ELI5.

  • I found out that the best way to make (certain) people stop asking it is to just be entirely honest for a change.

Don't say "I'm fine, thanks. And you?" Launch into a depressing tirade about everything that sucks in your life and the world. Trust me, they'll never ask again.

    Heavenly peace.

  • I am very sad that I've scrolled several pages and haven't seen the obvious one (though I could just be blind):

    Deus Ex.

Edit: or perhaps it's because Deus Ex is from 2000 and I don't know if it counts yet. Maybe I'll wait 'til next year!

  • But it's not stupidity. I mean, I agree, it's all stupid (as in: there are more important issues), but they're not stupid. They planned all this. It's exactly what they wanted and it's definitely not 'stupid' - It's insidious and malicious and cruel, but not stupid. This sounds like a dumb, tiny thing to do, I mean, it's just about words in an e-mail signature, right? It's not that big a deal? But a lot of things they're doing are -in a vacuum- not that big a deal. However, if you add it all up, it's all part of the wider persecution entire groups of people are falling victim to. In this case it's just another way to silence a minority and their allies.

Plus, don't forget: they'll use anyone who doesn't comply with the 'stupid' little stuff as an excuse for punishments and retaliation and even worse legislation.

Not stupid. Not ignorant. Not dumb. Incredibly fucking evil. And we should treat it like that. Don't minimize any of it, however insignificant it may seem. Put in context this is another drop in what will become a fucking ocean of suffering.

    Edit: grammar.

  • First the Jan. 6 Database, now CDC content.. They're just going to try to erase any and all information they don't like, hmm? I hope every agency has everything quadruple backed-up at the very least.

  • I'm sorry for ruining the one tiny positive thing you thought you'd found.

  • From your article:

Houston criminal court records show that case was unresolved when Taake – out on $20,000 bail – participated in the attack on the US Capitol. According to the Chronicle, local prosecutors confirmed Friday that Taake was now considered a wanted fugitive in connection with the pending charge of solicitation of a minor. But Houston jail records showed he was not in custody as of three days later.

Attempts to contact Taake were not immediately successful. And his attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

So I guess he did get out? And now he's a fugitive.. Why didn't they check this shit before they let him out?

    Edit: clarity.

  • I think so. At least the third one I heard about. One was arrested on gun charges? The other was shot during a traffic stop. And now this.

Trump is obviously not sending his best.

  • Yes, and while you are absolutely correct, let's also not forget that the early victims consisted not just of sexual deviants, but also of journalists, teachers, scientists, artists, etc. Basically any kind of intellectual, anyone who could threaten the propaganda machine. And political opponents, of course. Oh and books. Don't forget books. And disabled people.

Let's see. Who is Trump attacking? Transgender people? Check. Teachers? Check. Scientists? Check. Political opponents? Check Intellectuals in general? Check. Anti-intellectualism has been going strong for a while now of course. Books (information in general)? Check. Librarians? Check. Disabled people? Not sure about this one.

Trump and his cronies have watched a few WW2 documentaries and thought they were blueprints. His racism/bigotry might have a different prime target, but the whole playbook is a copy.

  • Regulators Say It’s Dangerous.

Not for long, they won't, because they won't be allowed to.

  • I am completely shocked by this unexpected turn of events. He lied? How is this possible? I always thought fascists were the paragons of truth.

  • Don't forget Jim Crow. The Nazis got a lot of their segregation and eugenics crap from the U.S.

  • I can't believe it. His followers have been telling me that he only wants to deport illegal immigrants! I'm shocked at this totally unexpected rhetoric!

  • The same kind of people as those who argue that allowing gay people to marry would somehow devalue their own marriage. Like, dude, if your marriage is influenced by other people getting married, you have bigger problems.

I never understood any of it. Racism, homophobia, any bigotry really. Like.. seriously who cares? I don't give a fuck who you love, who you fuck, what color your skin is, where you were born, or what you have between your legs. None of it affects me at all. Live and let live. Treat me like a human, I'll do the same for you. As long as everyone is a consenting adult, people should be able to do whatever the fuck they want, as long as nobody gets hurt (unless they want to, of course!).

Sometimes I think only miserable people are bigots. Someone who is truly happy with themselves doesn't have to put time and effort into hating people for being born the way they are, just to feel superior or something.

  • Yeah, we got a nice chuckle out of it too!

  • Oh no, of course not. Fucking Zionists.

What I meant was that it should be a surprise to no one that Trump says these things. He's been letting the world know who he is for a long time. You're right, no more dog whistles, but not exactly a surprise either.

  • Yes there is. Or there can be. A monarchy doesn't automatically mean the King/Queen actually has power.

The Netherlands, for example, is a monarchy, but is a parliamentary representative democracy. I think monarchies are ridiculous, we should just get rid of it. But you definitely can't call Willem-Alexander a dictator.

  • I can't believe there are actually people who are surprised about his 'proposal' at all. Like.. everyone saw this coming, right? Plenty of people have been warning other people for years that Trump would do this sort of shit.

But hey, what do I know. I'm just an alarmist fearmonger. Or whatever they used to call me.
