  • I googled a bit, and perhaps this statement comes from this old Reddit thread here in the first comments.

There it's mainly used as a joke to describe how Windows is just very backwards compatible in general. The story might have stuck and warped a bit as like it really had a reference to that Barbie game.

  • The app of course needs access to the Internet, through your WiFi or mobile Internet. However, depending on the app, phone OS and the security configuration of your local network setup it could have access to other devices as well.

But that's usually on purpose or by accident of the user. In court, one valid question could be if TikTok tries to make use of such a configuration, and for what reasons.

So I think the question itself is not that bad, if it got a clarification / follow-up question like the above.

  • While I agree with your sentiments, for a modern country I see it as a tool to be able to more easily handle international relationships with some countries who still see the importance (like an old handy swiss army knife you have laying around). As long as the monarchy is purely ceremonial and does not affect your own country's politics.

It should disappear sooner or later though. If it did not have that sneaky, seemingly effective benefit (as I've been dumbfounded by in the Netherlands) I'd be all for removing it right away.

  • Shame.

  • It feels so weird to me that the small change in degrees might actually kill a virus. I mean, wouldn't all viruses by now have become accustomed to "warmer climates"?

Or is it a cat / mouse game, our bodies being able to heat up more and them getting more fire resistant by the year. Was a fever less hot a couple of hundred years ago?

  • Very interesting, thanks! And I'd guess that if it's like a celebrity who gets mass voted on, without him/her knowing or agreeing and wins, they could easily just say they're not up to the task, minus peer-pressure. In theory if they'd get all the votes, the elections should be done once more.

But if people insist and again only vote on this celebrity, could that person explicitly upfront claim not to be a valid vote?

  • What if two people with the same name are sort of politically active (not on ballot) and you write a name down, which one gets the vote?

And what if I come up with a meme to vote for some random person, and people copy that and all vote for someone who unknowingly wins.

I'm interested if they have protocols for these (unlikely, but possible) scenarios.

  • It depends on if you trust Meta. Generally speaking there is end-to-end encryption in WhatsApp, which means only you and the person you chat with can decrypt your messages / media (source). I believe there are some weak spots in group chats, mostly caused by users themselves. Not sure about the new Community function but I'd be careful with what I share there.

Some parties like Apple have decided to scan photos from your device for illegal material (edit: after backlash they dropped this for now, my bad). If using an app like WhatsApp I'd personally be aware that something like that might happen in the future as well. I'd not be surprised if some employees might (temporarily) be able to access more data than widely assumed, for debugging reasons in case of bugs.

Personally I take the risk for pragmatic reasons, but it doesn't hurt to be a bit cautious / aware.

  • An underpowered one; In Another World With My Smartphone, trying to make a hotel understand that my wallet was stolen, using Google Translate, while they increasingly seem to question my sanity.

  • Plain copy paste without a critical view is not recommended, but it surely provides good pieces of code from time to time. Especially in obscure frameworks/languages, compared to what can be googled.

ChatGPT 4 is a really big difference with 3.5 though. What took me hours together with the 3.5, was fixed in a few minutes with 4.

  • Tomato soup with kidney beans can make it way more filling and gives the taste more body. Other less-western combinations with tomato work as well; like rice / beans, some sweet pepper, onion / tomato mixed sauce (perhaps even add apple or banana).

Otherwise stuff like Burritos and Chili recipes are always great.
