I've been on Android since 1.5 and the "snappy" claims remind me a lot of the claims every new version there too. They're likely still going, though I haven't been active on XDA for a long time to know.

Is it actually objectively faster? Or is it a perception thing based on the way animations and screen changes are handled?

I don't really understand why more people don't use Firefox. I've been using it almost exclusively for probably a decade without any compatibility issues, aside from the very few sites that specifically request IE or Edge (which I usually just bypass by changing User Agent anyway).

So the rail networks are operated by private companies? I am not familiar with the various acronyms, but that would certainly explain the complexity... Everyone wanting their slice of the pie.

It certainly looks complicated:

Transport services are provided by over 40 companies. These include the Bayerische Oberlandbahn, the Deutsche Bahn that also operates the S-Bahn, the Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft that operates the U-Bahn, tramway and city buses, together with multiple operators of regional trains and buses.

We (Queensland, Australia) have 50 cent fares at the minute - any public transport, no matter the distance / zone / etc is a flate rate of $0.50AUD. I assume any private interests are being compensated with tax dollars but at least it makes public transport simple and affordable.

There was recently a change from a Labor government (centrist?) to a Liberal government (right / conservative) so I suspect the 50c fares will be removed at some point, though they did make it permanent as part of an election promise. "Permanent" is a pretty flexible term from a politician though.

I am not educated in public transport logistics, but why do they make ticket prices so obnoxiously difficult?

It's seemingly a worldwide issue so there just be a reason.

It's been my daily client for probably 20 years now. My IMAP email account is around 80GB and it has no issues with that whatsoever.

Never understood how people use Outlook. It's so obnoxious and slow by comparison. To obsessed with a "modern UI" or whatever I guess.

Quick filter is amazing, as is instantly archiving to year/month subdirectories.

I really liked George Clooney as Batman.

I've run Nextcloud since OwnCloud was the only option, with zero issues on any setup - be it direct, via snap, or via docker.

(EDIT: Out of interest I looked up the first subdomain I can remember using - it sent my username the login details in February 2015 so that's over a decade now!).

On a cheap VPS, a dedicated box, and now self hosted since I finally have a decent enough connection to support it. Ran out of storage on the VPS, then the 4TB dedicated box, now on 120TB self hosted (Nextcloud only using around 6TB mind you). CPU and RAM were never an issue.

Mostly documents (PDF, ODS, ODT), photos and videos from jobs, and some people (myself included) use the storage to back up their phone gallery.

I use shared and private folders, shared and private calendars, and shared and private contact lists on Android, iOS, and PCs (Windows and Linux). I have a public upload directory for customers to send us files and often share files directly using expiring read only links.

It's easy and it works, no idea wtf people are doing to have so much drama with it.

I've got 512GB of RAM in my server, and 128GB of RAM on my desktop cause you can never have too much.

I'm not even a member of lemm.ee and was aware of it closing today^*

Upvote: helpful information, handy tips that are those little nuggets of gold you mine comments sections hoping to find, actually witty comments instead of oft-repeated Reddit style puns, people who actually put some effort in to their post. Basically: stuff I'd want to see if I stumbled on this thread from a Google search in the future.

Downvote: comments complaining about downvotes, any reference to "tankie" or any other perceived and dismissive stereotype, users who complain about being picked on especially by mods (and usually back it up with some tinfoil fanfic about how they've been tracked by Them), Reddit-isms that were overused there and never worth using here, people who don't source their "fact" especially when accompanied by a comment like "it's easy to find this fact". If it's that easy, you do it.

The downside of doing this is that the shares always show out of sync in the UI.

I've bought heaps of 240VAC rated items from AliExpress and not had a problem. They're definitely cheaply made for the most part, and I generally give them a once over to identify any glaring issues... but I've got heaps of stuff out there working just fine.

Is it possible you got the wired mains to the low voltage side? I remember a box of LED drivers I bought came with the 240V side using red+black, and the low voltage side using brown+blue that looked awfully similar. Had one go pop before we busted it open and realised the version that came on the unit had the wiring colours the exact opposite. What made life even harder is that the top cover was symmetrical and had been put on back to front.... so 240V was on the "correct" colour side.

I'm on Tildes, and it's a good site for discussion without the constant memes and accusations of everyone being a communist / not communist / slightly communist / whatever else seems to get thrown around on Lemmy.

Not real sure why RIF dude chose that site to write an app for though. The site itself is basically exactly the same as the app. Very clean, very simple, no wasted space. It's even better than old.reddit at prioritising content over pretty pictures.

Lemmy would benefit much more from a RIF app, even if Voyager and the like do a pretty good job as it stands.

Heres an idea... I made it in PHP and bash, cause I'm terrible at programming. But it works well and would be a neat school project I reckon.

Our VOIP provider provides webhooks. I have one setup so when someone rings, the webhook calls a script on my web server that looks up a phone book and then uses a Discord webhook to push what is essentially a more advanced caller ID to a private discord channel - their number, their name, company they represent, and some notes like "has a son Chris who plays football, married to Jill" or whatever.

The "phonebook" lookup first tries a remote shared phonebook (which is given in a Yealink format), and after parsing that data it saves a copy of that remote phonebook before moving on to the rest of the script. If it cant call the remote phonebook for whatever reason, it falls back on using the last saved copy locally.

The benefit of all this is that on my desktop I always know who's calling and a bit of a blurb about them before I pick up the phone, and if I'm out of the office I know who's trying to ring. Since I have VOIP on my phone as an extension I can technically have someone transfer the office to my mobile too so having the discord notification is handy when a transfer appears.

The members of the private discord channel determines who sees the notifications, and having a single phonebook to update for everyone in the office means it's always (... usually) kept up to date.

Everyone's so keen to be 12% Irish so they can claim they enjoy beer because of their proud Irish heritage, or have 0.5% native american so they can claim a tribe and get tattoos that are deeply spiritual (now), or that 8% Italian which explains why they love pizza. For a country that's so publicly proud - what with the flags and all - everyone's certainly keen to find any excuse to pretend to be from somewhere else.

I know literally one Australian who's done it, and they only did it after living in the US for a couple of years.

One of my family members moved to the US and did it. Really pissed me off that they'd do that but I guess it's the thing to do there?? They've since moved back to AU but got to leave a little bit of themselves (and by genetics, me) behind to be sold to the highest bidder <3
