  • I agree we should abolish the state but you imply markets to help the poor, do you envision a capitalist structure without a state? What would stop the current hoarders of wealth from continuing their dominance and creating an even more unequal corporate feudal state?

  • In the suburb I grew up in, a lot of the restaurant workers spoke Spanish, so even at the sushi place the Japanese chef would speak Spanish to the staff, saying gracias could be no different than arigato or thank you lol

  • They wouldn't freak out right away, they probably think their militias are more capable than the US military (what with 'woke officials' and trans rights n such), so they would be fine, until someone like Mexico (or even just a cartel from Mexico) decided to take back historically Mexican land.

  • It's a conservative position to limit immigration. Do you feel you support more progressive policies than conservative overall? What verifiable harm has come from increased immigration? People deserve a safe place to live, whether they were born in Mexico or Texas, we have more than enough resources in the US to help people that immigrate here. I don't see how your metaphor is accurate. The US isn't a house or private property.

  • The scale and proportions of this are all fucked, the rich take substantially more from the state than the non-rich. Is this a sarcastic meme or is this like shaming 'welfare queens'?

  • Someone is gonna come in here and complain like "ohh those commies are always blaming capitalism for everything!" But seriously, every point listed by OP is because we live under a system that requires endless growth for profit, this is the logical conclusion.

  • They spend the majority of those billions on marketing, higher tier salaries, a very small portion goes to the artists. Without those billions media would still get made because there is always demand for entertainment and art.

  • Idk if so many people remember this now, but watching him on Crossfire absolutely shut them down was so satisfying. Then the show just happens to get cancelled not long after for 'unrelated reasons', like they didn't get destroyed and quit in shame.

  • The only people who should be allowed to hold power are people who don't want it.

  • No, fuck the middle man, we don't need billion dollar conglomerates to distribute our media. The people have the tools and connection to create and share without these old business models trying to keep us in the 19th century as wage slaves, happy for the peanuts that their monopolies allow us to have.

I pirate things, and I also pay artists directly for their work when I can. Companies like Netflix manipulate the data and the market to ensure they are making the most profit possible. That is their entire goal as businesses. This exploitation should be separate from art altogether.

  • "Customers want to own their content". It's amazing to me that execs don't grasp this? Or that they think if they stop allowing it people will stop caring, but maybe they will eventually. But it seems obvious, I've know many families that had massive dvd collections they were proud of. Bookshelves with dozens of books they probably never even read. It's just comforting to have a thing and know it's yours.

Every development in business consolidates their power and increases anxiety for the people.

  • Would you really put the blame on piracy for that when there are conglomerates manipulating the entire market? I'm not doubting they exist, but can you name a small business streaming service that would be affected by pirate services? I have never heard of such a company. I've seen small streaming services utilized by libraries but they are on government contracts and tax funded as far as I know.

  • The peope being cruel and the people trying to help others are different groups, they both exist in most 'liberal' cities. Like Seattle, they have good resources for needy people compared to a lot of cities but the police are also known to have significant problems with white supremacists. And the business associations are allied with the police.

  • An embattled, beleaguered John Oliver in fatigues is a hilarious mental image, though I'd probably trust his command

  • And plenty of them want another civil war, the original one killed more Americans than each other war up to Vietnam combined.

  • I mentioned in another comment, I'm talking about visiting my grandma who lives on the opposite coast, like once a year or less, it's not cheap to drive that far. And for a trip that would be better to drive than fly I'd rather take a train, it's more pleasant and comfortable, they usually have bars and food served, I don't have to worry about parking or traffic and I could rent a car there if I need one.

  • It might be part of the culture, but there is a class of people with substantially more wealth who are able to direct legislation to cause people to be charged like this pastor. The vast majority of people I think anywhere on earth would believe you should help the needy, but the average people don't have a say like the wealthy class does, and this class has it's own distinct culture which praises greed and growth.

  • How often do you ride the subway? Thousands of people take the subway in NYC everyday of all income levels, it's a pretty big success.
