  • Twitter's valuation has dropped precipitously since Musk got involved. We have pretty solid evidence that his assholery is directly injurious to the company. I'm not saying that it's any better or worse for society, I'm saying that makes me not want to spend $75k+ for a product from a company that is being destabilized by their fuckboy CEO. When I'm spending that kind of money I want to spend it at a company that I can rely on.

As for the food comparison, how am I supposed to consider 8-10 years' worth of food the same as I consider a single purchase? That it is the same amount of money cumulatively doesn't really matter. 8-10 years of food is thousands of individual purchases and purchasing decisions, each offering an opportunity to adjust my habits or choices. If I buy a car and the company tanks, then I'm not getting updates, I'm maybe dealing with parts availability, etc. If the food I buy spoils or the company who makes it goes out of business because their CEO wanted to own some libs then I'm out the 5 bucks I spent right then on the one item.

  • Right, so that is really only the tutorials you are criticizing. And then a "lack of polish".

I can't imagine what part of the actual game mechanics feel less refined than BotW, it's the same game mechanics for the most part. I'd love to know specificsv regarding what you feel doesn't hit right with TotK.

If I were criticizing some things I would argue that the fuse mechanic is clunky, and that navigating inventory for throwing or fusing is a chore and could use streamlining.

I think that talking about it being the same map is a fair argument for how far you are into the game. When you play longer you find out about all the sky islands and the depths, which vastly expand the traversable area with new things. Also the map overall is similar at first glance but actually quite a bit different as you traverse it. In my opinion it ends up feeling fresh anyway as a result but again that's just my opinion.

You're entitled to your opinion so don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to convince you of anything. But your opinion is definitely pretty niche so I'm curious.

  • Yeah this is really it. The answer is that there used to be significant technical reasons to do so. Technology improved enough each year that last year's phones were really showing age.

At this point even basic phones are so fast and so feature rich that no one except niche groups needs anything faster than what came out several years ago. Everything basic like watching videos, maps, internet browsing, and messaging works perfectly fine on anything.

So the reasons shifted to renewing battery life and OS updates. Which are both at least somewhat artificial since manufactures could easily implement longer updates or replaceable batteries.

  • I mean...you're still in the opening of the game. The tutorials stop once you get into the meat of things. Maybe I'm just spoiled by having played Skyward Sword with its extremely pervasive tutorials, but these aren't even something I noticed in TotK.

You keep mentioning how sloppy it is. What apart from the tutorial issue do you find sloppy? I'd like to understand because the prevailing take on the game is that it is BotW but bigger and better in basically every way. I'm about 120 hours in and I tend to agree pretty strongly with that sentiment.

  • Reddit was and is impossibly easy to use. You visit the site and start scrolling. If and when you decide you want to participate you create and account and start doing so.

The barrier to entry on Lemmy is much higher. This will keep out many of the types of low effort users that would eventually turn this into reddit.

Maybe someday the fediverse will be as obvious to everyone as any other part of the internet but it's definitely not right now and it will be awhile before it is.

  • I agree with your premise. However I think that comparing Tesla and Musk to, say, the CEO of the company where you buy you coffee or clothes is a false equivalence.

The reasons I think OPs point is a bit more valid in the case of Tesla:

    • A vehicle is the second highest value purchase most people will make in their lives after a house. It deserves extra scrutiny
    • Musk has shown a willingness to do things with his companies that are either out of spite, for his own amusement, or are otherwise wildly against his companies' best interest. There are lots of CEOs who are shitbags, but most are actually trying to do what's best for their companies' bottom line.
  • Yeah I've been using Sync for 12 years and Lemmy has already replaced 90% of what I actually liked about reddit.

The only thing I'm missing is team-specific pro sports communities. I think those will come as userbase increases though.

  • The unfortunate thing for your desires is that portability is the reason the Switch has been so successful, and is also the reason it doesn't have "modern" specs. I'm sure the next system will be much more powerful, but I'm also sure it won't even be near the power of the PS5 or XSX because I am 100% sure it will still be a console that can be played on the go.

Thankfully as home consoles have much more transparently become purpose-built PCs using variations on off the shelf hardware, ratcheting down graphics to function on a lower power system isn't nearly as hard as it used to be.

  • This is honestly the biggest thing. I'd add Nintendo account support with the ability to bring over digital purchases to the new system.

If they do those two things I will buy the next system no matter what other things they do with it.

  • Came to say this also. I don't know why this isn't obvious.

I was anti using google instead of URLs for a long time. But once browser makers decided to start catering to people who do that by combining the address and search bar...well it happens by accident so often that I'm now one of those people.

  • It is 100% worth remaining hungry, remaining diligent, remaining skeptical, remaining active.

But we are in a very different climate right now. I think the big difference is that unlike 2015, people have actually seen what a trump presidency looks like. There are absolutely republicans that will refuse to vote for him, and he was bad enough that he will drive record high turnout from democrats.

  • I don't think not understanding this makes you less bright than anyone else.

The idea is that as you go up the pyramid, you are doing a better job conveying your stance by better supporting your argument. You can see at the bottom it's not even making an argument, it's simply yelling at the other person. At the top instead of cherry picking one phrase you're addressing the base argument. The pyramid doesn't really explain this, but the implication is that by being able to address the base argument you have taken the time to understand it. This is a much more effective means of argument or debate because if you understand the opposing viewpoint and still believe in your own you have already considered the superficial things that draw others to the other viewpoint and still chose your own.

  • Worthwhile thread, but I also feel like by definition true wireless buds cannot be BIFL sadly. I don't think a single model from any manufacturer has replaceable batteries or parts, so every single set will be ultimately disposable after a couple years.
