Well that's good of you. I'm stressed by cleaning but much more stressed by mess so it's a balance.
To me this sounds more stressful. Is that routine not stressful? I mean no judgment, I'm honestly curious.
Yeah that is certainly the logical next step.
I live in a SFH and I won't pretend I don't like it. I also won't pretend that I don't like being surrounded by other SFHs, because half the reason I moved here was to have the sort of idyllic neighborhood feel I had when growing up. So I understand people who have a hard time accepting the idea of higher density housing.
At the same time, I regularly think about how fortunate I am to have bought out house when we did about a decade ago. If we were entering the market today we would struggle to buy. The people who move into our neighborhood today are in a completely different financial stratosphere than us, which is sort of odd.
We have a fair amount of higher density housing in my city but there will probably need to be more as time goes on.
I'd love for there to be some way to scale zoning regulations in an intelligent way. Just spit balling, but maybe you say ok look, you can restrict to SFH until population hits a certain point and then this or this area opens as available for higher density construction without needing to convince people in real time. I realize that has its own issues, but I just wish there were more creative ways to deal with it that didn't involve trying to convince people when the need is already urgent.
You make a fair point. I honestly forgot what the original meme was and had focused purely on the discussion. I'd agree that the original meme isn't productive conversation (though what meme is, really?).
I hold with my right hand, though I don't exactly hold the handle. I put my hand through the handle and wrap my fingers around the cup itself.
- I have several favorite mugs which I rotate because I am a slob and the others may be unwashed.
- Emphatically no
Let me assure you, this kind of passive behavior does NOT work and only results in being resentful as you wait for the other person to figure it out and they never do.
Don't assume people will figure something out on their own if you care about the result. Communicate openly. I cannot stress that enough.
This is going to sound stupid, but... Don't you have to clean up for them to be able to come in and do their job?
Our major issue isn't so much that it's "dirty" per se. Granted that is an issue too, certainly. But the real issue is just that there are "things" everywhere. Kid stuff, papers or objects put down in haste, things that toddlers surreptitiously grabbed and moved into incorrect locations, etc.
All those things are why we don't get to truly cleaning. Wouldn't we have to get all those things picked up if we hired cleaners?
I think we simply don't agree. You lose me at your first paragraph. The second this is framed as anti-man, you lose your audience of men immediately. It doesn't matter whether it rings true or not. Men don't feel that seeing buff dudes is the effect of toxic patriarchy bearing down on them. They just wish they could be be strong and powerful like these images they see. Telling them they are the victim and that men are to blame is very counterproductive.
There are some very complex socio-evolutionary-mental issues at play here that go beyond guys simply needing to blame men that are more powerful than them for their insecurities. I should know, I'm a guy who thinks often about images like these and what they mean for me and my ability to look and feel how I want. And I'm happily married for over a decade. It's not about whether women find me attractive. I want to feel like I'm in the body I want. And what I want has been quietly shaped to an unreasonable ideal over the course of many years. That isn't something easily changed, and it's really the crux of things.
I think my point is that they really aren't linked. It is two groups experiencing similar things, but for a variety of reasons the context is completely different. And moreover because the conversation is essentially brand new for one group and extremely well known for the other, talking about them like they are the same cheapens the conversation around the newer group.
I'd liken it to a friend telling you about a problem they're having and instead of listening to them, starting to talk about your own similar problems. I realize that's a superficial example but I think it explains where I'm coming from.
I mean in no way to disregard or minimize the long and well documented struggle women have had with body image issues. But I do think men's body image issues deserve to be discussed on their own merit without always needing to be contextualized through the lens of women's issues.
I really feel like this misses the point. And it sells both men and women short.
The most cruel part of depictions like this isn't simply that the opposite sex is or isn't drooling over them. It's that they are presented as ideal and desirable physiques.
This impacts how people feel like they should aspire to look. And that impacts how they feel about their own bodies.
It is so reductive to focus just on whether these bodies are objectified by the opposite sex. It's the internal struggle people are faced with that is the real issue.
But men have been told since forever to bottle things up and not acknowledge them. Men don't get to have emotions. This is not a new issue and in fact many men themselves perpetuate this problem. That isn't the exact same issue anymore.
When we finally get to a point where people are discussing it, bringing up the group who have been dealing with it for years as though men aren't allowed to to have these feelings too absolutely minimizes the initial conversation.
There is space for both conversations to happen, and both should happen. But when this happens in literally every thread trying to discuss male body dysmorphia that's not positive conversation anymore.
I mean, 8 lots with 8 houses can sleep what...like 30-40 people max?
On that same space you can build a 5 story hotel with 80 rooms that sleep up to 4 each. That's a vast increase in density and a much more efficient use of space.
I'm generalizing of course, but this is the gist.
Talk radio or television broadcasts the same stuff to everyone. It's damaging, absolutely. But social media literally tailors the shit to be exactly what will force someone farther down the rabbit hole. It's actively, aggressively damaging and sends people on a downward spiral way faster while preventing them from encountering diverse viewpoints.
Yep, same
I hope they all succeed! Honestly I do.
It's just that, well, I started using Sync morev than 10 years ago. Averaged 1.5-2 hours every single day since then. It's very much home for me.
I'm very happy there are other choices and I'm very glad that some people prefer them. But once I learned Sync was coming to Lemmy it automatically earned first dibs on my loyalty.
Hard to settle on just one. In no order:
- ChuChu Rocket (Dreamcast): insanely fun and manic couch multiplayer game
- A10 Tank Killer II: Silent Thunder (PC): the soundtrack alone justifies the time to play this aging flight sim
- Virtual On (Arcade): this was ported to Saturn and the port is good, but the giant arcade machine is where it's really at with dual twin stick cockpits
- Mario Paint (SNES): Really fun non-game from a time when non-games were uncommon on home consoles. I have hundreds of hours into this
- Dungeon Keeper (PC): darkly comedic evil dungeon lord management sim. I will never forgive EA for what they did to Bullfrog and subsequently the DK franchise. There have been many attempted homages and clones but none have captured the magic.
- Super Tennis (SNES): an actually fun tennis game
- Super Play Action Football (SNES): football game with a unique isometric view
- Hank Parker's Super Black Bass 2 (SNES): super fun fishing sim. I wish there were games like this today that took fishing more seriously and less arcadey.
- Brain Age (DS): a genuine sensation in its heyday and largely forgotten now. Really showed off the potential of the DS
- Cel Damage (GameCube): twisted metal with zany little cel shaded cartoon characters. Never got the respect it deserved and probably never will since they butchered the game's balance with the HD re-release
I just want to be clear that I've paid for Sync in various ways I think 3 or 4 times now and I'll gladly pay for it again. Jerboa has been at least functional (10x better than when I first started using it a few months ago).
But it's Sync I want.
I hope you are asking that rhetorically.
But if the question is serious, its because very many people grew up with google and got really good at using it. Got dependent on the certain idiosyncrasies of how Google presents its results. Got entangled in multiple other google services that make results more relevant.
I have my entire career because I was (and am) better than a lot of people at googling things. I hate what Google has become and I do have DDG as my primary search tool on my phone now. But it's really difficult to completely jettison google search and I do still use it fairly regularly. Even though they seem insistent on making their results as trash as possible.
If anything its at least pushed me to start thinking of search engines as tools, and that regularly using more than one might be a good thing.
Last report I saw had traffic numbers to their ad space still down about 20%. That's definitely an amount they notice, though I'm sure they hope and believe it'll go back up.
I definitely do not think they are calling any of us back per se, but on he other hand the way spez talks is definitely like someone who is in denial about being dumped.
I have the version of this with the thermal carafe and the hopper that rests atop the maker with a built in burr grinder. Came to post it, because we've had it for 11 years with daily use and is still works like a champ. Like you said, parts are readily available, inexpensive, and it's been easy to replace the ones that needed it. If ours somehow broke irreparably I wouldn't hesitate to buy another the next day.
