  • Wisconsinite here.

Not having the drop boxes has been super annoying.

My wife and I both work full time, and we have little kids. Having the ability to both fill out our absentee ballots and then one of us drop it off was really really helpful for getting our ballots to a place we knew it would be counted.

Instead our options now are to mail it (which is fine but as pointed out by OP, this is not maybe the most reliable or dependable since there is not a guarantee it gets there in time or at all), or to physically bring our ballots to city hall (which we have to each find time to do separately during business hours).

I would love to have the drop boxes back.

  • I guess time will tell. I kind of doubt demand is going to drop until the people who are nostalgic for these things start to die, and that is many years off. By that time supply will have dwindled even more.

I think the exponential growth is a bubble that will burst but I'm not sure I can see values actually dropping.

  • Are you buying things just to collect them? Or do you have a collection of stuff you bought when you were younger and are holding on to that for nostalgic reasons?

I don't really actively buy any retro stuff anymore unless I'm wanting to play some particular game or something. It's just too expensive.

But I would have a really really hard time selling things with sentimental value. Maybe that will change someday but for now it's too recent (20-30 years ago for me for most of it).

The other thing is, unless you really need the money (or space) now... Physical video game paraphernalia is not likely to go down in price over time. It necessarily becomes more scarce as time goes on. So that's something to consider even if you're just collecting to gain value.

  • It boggles the mind why they never released the phone from the first movie. They thought we just wanted anything from the matrix series so they launched the one from the matrix 2 but that one was bulky and unattractive.

It was that sexy slider everyone really wanted and they denied us!

  • Screaming trees was the first one I got, mostly just because I know the band and that made it a super obvious clue.

    Good band, check them out!

Or at least listen to the Mark Lanegan era of QOTSA.

  • I ordered a Noctua CPU cooler from Amazon a few years ago. It was sold to me as new, and it definitely looked new, but when I opened the package to the it out and install it, it was missing several components. It had obviously been opened and either used or at least taken apart, then put back in the packaging.

I didn't feel scammed necessarily, but it was extremely annoying. I had no trouble with Amazon taking it back and sending me a new one. Honestly the only reason I think you'd have trouble is if your account has a history of questionable or large returns.

  • Yeah that part is scary. But even that side (which we won't name) has a significant number of people who, while they have bad opinions and want bad things, don't actually want the level of insanity and violence we have seen from supporters of a certain unnaturally colored presidential figure.

I have real hope that people are figuring the problem out soon enough that they can solve some of this through increased voter turnout and higher engagement. If we'd gone another decade of complacency we'd be in a lot worse spot because many legitimate avenues of combating oppressive policies might have gotten blocked. But as it is, people can still effect change. That makes actual civil war unlikely, at least for now.

  • You said it's asphalt shingles in another comment. If it's under 20 years old and you aren't having issues, there's nothing for you to do.

If you're getting moss, leaf, or pine needle build up, I would clear that off with some regularity. You don't have to be militant about it, just get a broom or brush and clean it when you can. If your roof pitch is shallow enough to allow these issues then it should be shallow enough to do cleaning yourself. If the pitch is so steep you'd want to hire someone then you probably don't have these issues.

I would never call any part of a house "set and forget". But correctly installed asphalt shingle roofs are made to last 20-30 or more years with little to no maintenance during that span. Since you're new to the home I don't see any harm in having a professional inspect it to get a read of where you're at. They should be able to give you an estimated remaining lifespan and advice on things to watch for specific to your roof.

    Good luck!

  • Things are very heated right now certainly. But there are still a lot of people (a LOT) of people who just want to live their lives and are not going to literally wage war on people in their own country.

It's not a zero percent chance but it's near zero.

  • Yeah I agree. Arguably reddit isn't even mainstream, and it is exponentially larger than Lemmy now and will remain so for the foreseeable future.

I'm really loving Lemmy, but it is not even remotely a factor if we are having a conversation about things that are mainstream enough to reflect popular opinion.

  • I'm in the same boat. I at least sort of "understand" it if that makes sense? Like, it's not my bag but I know about it and that makes it easier to ignore.

But like...my wife is not at all a gamer. She goes to forums or reddit to follow hobby interests she has. Having a bunch of cringey leetspeak and gamer bro stuff is going to be off-putting to those types of people, and maybe enough to prevent them from adopting the platform at all.

It certainly factored into our decision to use slack for our college friends group instead of discord.

  • I hope not. I don't understand when people suggest discord as a replacement for forums or things like reddit. It's not really the same thing at all.

And that's to say nothing of it being pretty targeted towards gamers and gamer culture. I am a gamer and don't mind it but it's a barrier to adoption for people who aren't at all into that.

  • Slack kills me. A group of friends of mine from college use it to stayb in touch. Our instance has a dozen or so users, half of them mostly lurk to stay in the loop. For us active members it would definitely be worth paying 7.25/mo or whatever it is, but we don't want to lock out the others who don't really use it so often and they definitely wouldn't pay for it (and some can't really afford it).

I wish they had a tier below Pro for personal use (we aren't a business) that gave full post history and limited everything else and was maybe not per user billing but instead usage based. It's such a great, intuitive platform and works perfectly for our group of friends except that you can't go back to look at anything.
