  • oh man, is it just me or were pretty much all of the examples in that list absolutely awful looking. not saying the styles they mentioned aren't fine or good, just their choices for pictures. i hated almost every single one of them, and I'm normally one who likes bolder styles on men... also, the single nod to the existence of black hair halfway through 😅.

  • hell, I'm across the country at my parent's place and got them a movie by remoting into my home pc to start a torrent and had it populatred in my Plex server and streaming at full bluray quality 4k hdr in less time that it took for them to get popcorn ready.

they never even knew that i had to do any of that. i just told them "yeah, I'll get that set up while you get snacks"

  • God it feels good to have some of the only municipal fiber in the U.S.. gigabit symetric for a flat $60/mo, never get ads from them, price is always the same, never gone down, speeds are largely as advertised... there's even a 2.5 gig and 10 gig option. once i have the hardware for it I'm looking at the 2.5 gig. right now I'm almost saturating my 1 gig with jellyfin and stuff, but if I get some more hardware I'm looking at using it to properly get in on the self hosting scene finally.

  • hmm, that feels a bit like splitting hairs. at that point we have to argue whether the establishment is capitalism, or the government. and that just seems like a pedantic argument about semantics that will accomplish nothing. point being, most fascists want to overthrow their current government.

  • yeah, everything op pointed out are things a person would screw up because they don't know the tools. I'm also gonna call this non-ai 3d corporate art. the only part of this that feels remotely ai are the cotton swabs, but that could easily just be because it's hard to make a good 3d cotton swab.

  • en, your mileage may vary on portrait mode. fur is what is struggles the most with. personally I'd go for getting close and letting the natural depth of field shine through for what it's worth. most phones are at like an f:/2.8. they can have natural bokeh, they're just ultra wide angle so you gotta get close.

it may just be me, but those wonky edges make it look worse than if it just didn't have the effect at all.

  • hmm idk... the only real reason vr has playeued so hard is because of the high barrier to entry. the tech is fine, but there's not that many good games because it's expensive and not many own it.

I'd argue that ai will continue to see raid growth for a little while. the core technology behind LLMs may be plateauing, but the tech is just now getting out in the world. people will continue to find new and creative ways to extend its usefulness and optimize what it's currently capable of.

basically, back to the vr example. people are gonna start making "games" for it. did one's free, and everyone is hungry for it. I'm putting my money on human creativity for now...

  • but the problem is that we need to do both. we're not blameless, and throwing our hands up and doing nothing because they won't either is incredibly not helpful.

just like when voting, individual action may feel pointless and hard, but it's still necessary. we can still do things and make choices, but everyone is just giving up now because of this feeling...

of course corporations are polluting more, but so are we, and we can still force change through consumer action. just like conservatives are dumb for bitching about companies "catering to the left" when it's actually just the same things they always have and always will do: cater to the average. if more of us would stop and think "huh, this product uses less packaging, maybe that should be a factor in my purchasing decision."these companies would start using less packaging. but no, most people just open something over packaged, and either don't notice, or shake their heads for a moment and comment on the plastic waste before buying the same thing again next time...

we can't be defeated by the inaction of others. if we do, then even their action won't be meaningful if/when it comes. it's going to take more than just one side...

  • that's significantly less bad of a problem than the current issue of no one being able to afford homes. that nurse might just have to go for the apartment... that's really not that big of a deal.

  • if any of those names survive long enough to be relevant for all that. the lag on corporate adaptation of new tech is getting faster, but it's still going to be a number a years i think until we start to see any real saturation of this tech in that space. i doubt Miyazaki can wait that long...

  • yeah, often the script writing brain storming season doesn't really start until you've been spinning your wheels for 8 hours going nowhere and now it's 2am and someone just said "but what if she never went outside"

sometimes we don't get there until we get a little goofy. I've heard it might just be how creatives work.

  • Google bought Waze forever ago and cannibalized what they wanted from it then killed the rest with the worst ads I've ever seen on a driving app. it straight up gives full screen ads every time you stop. you're not allowed to look ahead on your route at a stop light without interacting with the ad.

i managed to block the ads, but it still pulls up a full page black screen where the ad is supposed to be...
