Hypocrisy is a prerequisite to becoming a Republican. Calling out their hypocrisy is like saying water is wet.

The main problem with Matrix is that the protocol is too big. There's no server and client that's feature complete, other than Synapse and Element.

On the other hand, the exodus catapulted Lemmy from being an obscure project to a well rounded one. Lemmy doesn't seem to have as many problems these days as it had initially. Meanwhile, we are spoilt for choices on clients after many of the defunct reddit clients were repurposed for Lemmy.

I think Threads won't try to federate with Mastodon, since it's most likely to end up as a PR disaster. Half of the fediverse will de-federate with them from the outset, while the rest of them will have their fingers on the trigger. I don't think the fediverse has any tolerance for their BS after their (and Google's) rug pull on XMPP.

Discord's usability is terrible for Open source communities. It never gave me the impression that it was designed for anything more than game chat rooms. The topic separation and discoverability is poor. Even Zulip does a much better job at it.

Open source maintainers always ask you to search the bug tracker/forums before asking a question. The same maintainers make their own life hard when they choose Discord, because the history is simply a black hole as far as search engines are concerned. Just use a discourse forum or something similar.

Mastodon and Lemmy have reached the critical mass needed to sustain itself. Let the people discover it themselves. No need to invite them in.

Common people aren't the ones who drive adoption of a platform. It's the younger population - particularly those in their teens and twenties. Everyone else just follows their lead. Mastodon isn't a challenge at all for that demographic. It isn't anymore complicated than email - something that their seniors mastered easily. They just need an incentive to do it. And Musk may be providing it.

Frankly though, I believe that the shareholder-driven megacorps are a lost cost for the entire society - be that providing good printers or not dumping CO2 in the atmosphere and causing a mass extinction event.

We need a different type of economy - one that is neither communist nor hyper capitalist (like the one responsible for the current conundrum). One where normal people are involved in production of high tech products. The FOSS ecosystem is a good example of it. We need something similar in all areas.

YouTube started nearly (or completely?) ad-free and stayed that way till all of their competition was dead, people were addicted to it and there was no alternative. Then they started turning up the ad knob - gradually to avoid people leaving for something newer, until it was so obnoxious that ad blockers became common among even nontechnical users. Now they're gas lighting ad block users as if they are committing a crime.

YouTube wouldn't be in a position to make these unfair demands if they didn't use their enormous wealth to create a video hosting monopoly and subjecting their users to bait and switch. F*** Google and their pretend morality. F*** them for destroying the web experience. F*** them for destroying web access and livelihood for many by banning their accounts and neglecting all appeals. I'm sure not going to create revenue for a very abusive, unethical and evil corporation.

If content creators want to get paid, start a patreon account or something. Or join a paid subscription service like nebula. I'm open to all those. I just don't want a disgusting leech in between.

Interesting! The idea that the entire universe was once in the Goldilocks zone sounds weird - though it certainly follows from the cooling that the universe underwent after the big bang. However, the universe apparently lasted in the zone for only a few million years. That means any life that formed then would have to stay dormant for the billions of years before being seeded on planets like Earth. So it still doesn't explain the billions of years of prior evolution. May be I'm missing something.
