  • Apple's excuse is that it is to prevent stolen devices from being used as a source of parts for repairs. What is surprising though, is that many people parrot that line. They are either astroturfing or are brainwashed enough to believe it.

Edit: I found examples of this further down the thread. SMH!

  • If that worked, we could have easily prevented AI companies from vacuuming up data from personal websites and separately hosted git repos. We could put a condition that if they train their models using our data, then the model and its weights would automatically be under the same license as our content. Of course, those psychopaths are going to use their money to defeat such arguments in court.

  • Not being able to? They ARE literally squeezing every dollar and penny out of common folk. Imagine diabetic patients dying because they can't afford insulin - which was made available as a medication nearly 100 years ago and was meant by the discoverers to eradicate diabetic deaths. Imagine accepting tax payer's money in the form of Covid-19 bail out meant to support employees and avoid layoffs, then keeping it to themselves and laying off the above said employees. Imagine creating artificial scarcity of food in the name of a pandemic and raising prices across the board and through the roof. Imagine training AI on work done by coders, journalists, writers, etc and then using it to lay off the same people.

Their tears aren't because they can't squeeze out every dollar out of us. Those tears are what crocodiles shed when they mercilessly shred their helpless victims to shreds. It's the tears that a serial killer sheds on seeing their victims struggle for life. It's the same tears that any villainous sociopath gets when they torture others.

  • It lists significant events. I don't think they consider failures as significant events. However, landing near the south pole is. If L25 had succeeded, it would have taken the place of CY3.

  • His entire government will fall if the no-confidence movement wins. However, there is little chance of that happening. His party is the majority in the assembly and they couldn't care any less about Manipur. This is an attempt by the opposition to make Manipur a big talking point among the public to get some leverage in the general elections next year.

  • I have watched may be 2 of his videos before this, despite youtube recommending them all the time. Somehow, those videos that I did see didn't give me the impression that they were genuine or decent. How do I know that? I don't know - it's like a feeling. I have seen other youtubers with less followers, whose videos exude hard work and passion. They are enough to get you hooked on subjects you weren't even interested in the first place. When did people lose the ability to feel the character of the people they see?

  • It doesn't look good for LMG, even with the bare minimum information out there. But honestly, Madison should be more worried than LMG. A sub group of their fan base doesn't seem too bothered by morality or legality - no matter what stance LMG itself takes. There are stories floating around that they bullied a 10 year old youtuber into suicide and his mother followed suit because she couldn't take the agony. They say that Linus tried to discourage them, but they did it anyway. I don't know how true this is. But if it is true, Madison is in for a ride. The only advantage now is that there will be some around to fight back from her side. I'm not surprised that she was hesitant to speak up earlier.

  • I don't think it's pedantic. It's relevant. Web is a mess, thanks largely to Google. But we still have a lot of other protocols and the freedom to come up with new alternatives. If they figure out how to abuse the TCP/IP stack, then it's game over. We might as well start from scratch.

  • It's easy to belittle their suffering like this, saying they should have left earlier. But there is always a back story to how people getting bullied end up getting victimized longer than they should. If you gave Madison's story more than a cursory look, you would realize that all the classic elements of abusive entrapment were there.

When she accepted the job at LMG, she had jeopardized her visa status in the US and was more or less starting from scratch in a very expensive city in Canada. You would expect the employer to be considerate and supportive of such employees. But LMG insisted that she cancel her patreon account and on representing her (which she says they didn't do at all). They insisted on taking a cut from her earnings too.

And like many other sexual harassment victims, she wasn't in a position to walk away like you say. LMG apparently gaslighted her and made vague threats. They certainly had the power to ruin her life with their somewhat mindless fanbase - and she was right to fear it. Leaving the company without another job would have probably ended her up in the streets - forget lawyering up. I honestly don't think employees in her situation can afford to hire lawyers.

I don't want to completely believe her words because it's still hearsay. That said, the evidence in the public is pointing more to the possibility that she may be telling the truth. But it doesn't help when people just dismiss her saying that she should have stood up for herself. You simply don't understand the position a victim of a vitriolic workplace finds themselves in.

  • The lack of good support for MS Office formats in FOSS tools is Microsoft's fault. Office itself often creates files that are slightly incompatible with their own published OOXML standard. FOSS tools are left chasing these inconsistencies. I wish the world had settled on ODF instead of OOXML for documents.

  • OpenSCAD is a good take on CAD. My primary workflow is also based on plaintext (text configs, code, org-mode, latex, etc) and keyboard (no mouse). It's easy to manage and back it up with version control tools like git. However, there are a few fields that I feel are inherently visual and need a very interactive tool. CAD is one of them. Others are 3D animation and art.
