  • Well, firstly, comparing a Tesla and a Bentley is like saying that a hotdog cart sold more hotdogs than a Michelin Star restaurant sold filet mignons. They're just not even remotely comparable, because your average Tesla (Model 3/Y) sells for about 1/5th of what a typical Bentley costs, and with tax credits and all the "end of month incentives" they keep rolling out, a Model 3 can cost less than a Camry in many cases. They have the Model S, but even then, even a loaded Model S just barely touches the cheapest entry level Bentley price range.

    Secondly, Teslas haven't been selling like "hotcakes" for close to 2 years now. They've had to massively slash prices non-stop to keep sales up, and even then that hasn't really been working. They're having to cut production, have been building up inventory, and they're still seeing sales stagnating and falling revenue.

  • Unfortunately we don't get those in the US, and they even stopped selling the i30 (Elantra GT) here in 2020. You can fortunately still get the Elantra sedan, but the hatchback definitely adds a ton of practicality to it.

  • I can't imagine that people will keep shoveling money in for another ten years

    See, that's what I thought after the first hundred million with basically nothing to show other than being able to walk around your spaceship. Yet here we are.

  • Because it grabs attention and sounds scary, which really what media outlets care about. My other favorite is when they talk about someone having being caught with "hundreds of rounds of ammunition", which clearly indicates that's how many people they were planning on murdering, and isn't just a pretty typical range day, or in the case of reallly common stuff like 9mm, 22LR, or even 223, can literally be a single box of ammo.

  • But that really makes no sense. Unless you have them all set up in a row pointed exactly where you want, you're probably not even saving half a second vs reloading. The old "switching is faster than reloading" thing doesn't apply nearly as much when you're at a static position and can have all your mags out in the open at arm's reach.

  • One pedal braking makes this a bit tricky for people who are not used to it and/or panicking. You spend decades of your life having a seperate "go" and "stop" pedal, and then suddenly they're the same one. You have your foot over the accelerator, lift a bit and feel the deceleration as if you're pressing the brake.

    Suddenly, something darts behind you, and your brain says "I'm feeling deceleration, so your foot is on the pedal that stops things" and you slam on it like you would the brake pedal. I've done it with the clutch/brake after hopping back and forth between a manual and automatic a few dozen times after a very long day of vehicle testing. Muscle memory is a powerful thing and your brain's mental model of the world is not always correct.

  • You know they're not illegal in the majority of states, right? The main thing limiting access is cost, but even then it's no more than a used car. Yeah, you have to go through the NFA, but that's hardly more difficult than a normal NICS check, just pay the $200 and wait for the okay.

  • Original Star Wars is "bad" for the same reason that anyone watching the Matrix for the first time is going to think it's kind of dumb and cheesy as hell: Tastes have changed, and all of the tropes and groundbreaking stuff it did were copied and satirized to death. There are definitely movies that have held up better than others and stayed more in line with modern tastes, but I don't think it's fair to look back at an old movie with almost 50 years of progress and judge it entirely on that.

  • My dude, even legacy stocks that pay dividends like fucking Costco and Microsoft are up 250+% the past 5 years. The market has been absolutely bonkers the past 5 years, and acting like Tesla is some incredible investment and not just a meme gambling stock is pretty hilarious.

  • Working in the industry on these technologies, this is a horrible idea. I've driven vehicles that already have it, and it's nice when it's optional, but would legitimately be a hazard if it was on all the time.

    What happens when it's dark and/or rainy, and it reads the 45MPH sign on the side road you were on, but misses the 70MPH sign when you're actually on the highway? It limits your ability to actually accelerate to the flow of traffic as well, since it generally won't change the speed until after you pass it. Or even better, you're doing 70 and it catches a 35MPH on a side road adjacent to the highway? What happens if you just cover the camera and it can't read anything? Does the car just go into limp mode and limit you to 25MPH?

    This isn't a hypothetical, I see it happen very, very regularly in even the best systems available. They also probably won't work for the lighted school zone speed limit signs by me, or the express lane type signs.
