  • it does not. Seagulls are protected in: UK, Ireland, all of Europe, all of North America, Mexico, Australia, Japan, Russia, and probably more but i can't be bothered to go past the first few Google searches to find out

  • as someone who's had their food stolen by a seagull a few times i once found myself in a fit of petty rage googling "can i kill a seagull" and the answer is no, like legally you cannot, they're protected birds

  • fascinating how far we've gotten in the science of abusing every aspect of human psychology

there's so, so many ways to influence others

recently i've been binging some true crime, two videos by two different youtubers, same topic. A mother murdered by her adopted teen son

    • video 1: the mother is presented as a flawed saint, not perfect but with a big heart. the teen is presented as a sociopathic monster, troubled, ungrateful, heartless. the second to last fight he broke her arm. the last fight he killed her. when he spoke of how his mother abused him the youtube comments sang "what a monster, to try to slander his mother after he killed her"
    • video 2: a few more details appear, the focus shifts towards the mother. she once had two adopted sons, the second she adopted so "[her son] can experience having a sibling", some time later CPS had to intervene as the second kid had bars in his windows and a bucket for a toilet. he was deemed troubled and ultimately ran away from home. she had a tendency to fight with her remaining son, degrade him on the basis of his race "if i hadn't adopted you, you'd be standing on the border with the rest of those people" (she might've said "idiots" but i can't be bothered to check). she felt like her teenage son owed her money for phone bills. the narrator here goes into detail how antisocial personality disorders can be caused by both genetic and environmental factors, they can be learnt behaviours. the remaining son often left home and lived with others after he fought with his mother, mostly about money. here the fact he broke her arm in a fight is ommited, just mentions how he lived with another person and thought long if he should come back. he's presented as a troubled teen abused by his mother who taught him heartlessness and who ultimately snapped and killed her. the youtube comments sang "what a terrible woman, how could she treat him like that"

same situation, two videos giving you the "correct" interpretation of the events. if i hadn't accidentally found the other one i wouldn't even have known there was more to the story, it seemed very matter of fact, very objective, just reporting on what happened & the context that caused it.

it's really that simple, all it takes is to pick the facts that suit your narrative and present them, you're not really lying that way, but who would consider it truth either

and that's one tactic amongst many

  • i'm looking forward to getting a stable-ish job after my trial period. i already accepted an internship and have another offer on the table that can fill in my time nicely

i'm also looking forward to playing Patapon 1 & 2 replay, and Ratatan, and maybe even Silksong but it's been so long i'm not sure it's not just a collective hallucination

  • pre-op trans men often wear binders, those, though helpful in relieving dysphoria, compress your chest and make it harder to breathe

(or the other thingy the other person said, idk i never left my room without a binder, and even that was 6 years ago already)

  • that's why i keep two books in the bathroom. True Facts That Sound Like Bullshit by Shane Carley, and Brief Answers to Big Questions by Stephen Hawking. Perfect for reading ~10-20min at a time

  • hah same, it was the first thing i did after getting some emulators. and yeah the emulation gives some lag that's normally not noticable, but in rhythm games that require perfect timing it can make the whole experience miserable

  • oh heck yeah! as a patapon fan i finished the demo and i absolutely adore it! it feels like the natural evolution of patapon, we skipped a few games that'd make the transition smoother but the soul is there

  • that actually helped me remember that my target language exists, it was good for me to at least have a brush with some learning on the days that i just didn't feel like doing much.

what was the final nail on the coffin for me was duolingo neutering the japanese course, they delayed introducing kanji so hard i was seeing the most basic basics like 母, 父, 語, even 何 in hiragana, which made the course deeply counterproductive as reading japanese in hiragana only, when you know the kanji already slows you down considerably. consider: ははははなをもっています vs 母は花を持っています, both mean "my mum has a flower" but one of them has a string of は you need to decipher the meaning of first before you can understand the sentence, the other's meaning can be understood instantly

  • to this i'd like to add that when i browse there sometimes i keep seeing people saying things like "this is reddit libs are everywhere" "this is reddit even slight conservatism will make people call for a death sentence" or "this is reddit you can't say anything non-progressive" and those are getting many upvotes, whilst anything said that'd paint you as anywhere left of centre will get you downvoted.

it seems like the conservatives have taken over and yet they still feel like they're surrounded
