Except Trump leaves the second part out completely. He should be announcing large subsidies for American auto companies to bring those jobs back to the US but he's not.

He's going to find a way to siphon the money to himself and his magnificent 7 buddies.

What could he have caved on? Carney seems to understand that a country can impose any tariff that it wants and there is nothing he or Canada can do about that. All they can do is focus on the response. Trudeau and Ford rushing over to the US to beg for exemptions didn't exactly play well.

Carney said he would not talk to Trump until he respected Canadian sovereignty. Trump did not call him governor or refer to Canada as the 51st state. At the very least it's a step forward in discourse which no one else has acheived up until this point.

I would add that the definition of hate crime is relatively fluid depending on cultural bias. For example, there are many Jewish communities that invest heavily into tracking the nature and number of hate crimes suspected to be related to antisemitism. As a result the threshold is often lower to define such crimes as hate crimes

This isn't to say that those hate crimes are overcounted, rather it's that other groups are more likely to have crimes be dismissed / written off as for a reason other than 'hate'.

People within a group can almost always tell you when a crime is due to hatred but unfortunately we often don't take it seriously unless they have a foundation with millions of dollars and a team of lawyers behind them.

Sure but even Obama, who did not have to deal with gender based prejudice and was generally a well liked populist, could not pull a majority of the white vote. A lot of white voters just could not bring themselves to trust him because he looked different and had a different name. It's incredible he ever got elected.

Identity politics are baked into American culture unfortunately and I wonder if a female PoC has a real shot with where things are now. If they do, other PoC would really have to show up for them, like they did for Obama.
