  • I guarantee you they are too stupid to realize as long as he didn't type anything.

Have you seen boomers and gen x operate anything on a smartphone? If it doesn't 'just work' then all bets are off. It's as bad as gen z only understanding smartphone UIs.

  • Having known several healthcare workers with PTSD from the pandemic I strongly disagree.

Granted, the pandemic was traumatizing for people from all walks of life but I don't envy hospital based nurses or doctors from that time.

It was so painful for nurses that many quit leading to a shortage that'll likely go on for the next decade as a result.

Some of that is due to corporate healthcare enshittification but there was a mass exodus during the pandemic for a reason.

  • It's hard to imagine a majority of white voters supporting AOC. Obama managed win two elections despite 43% and 39% of the white vote due to strong PoC voter turnout but I doubt that would play out well in the current political climate. AOC would be even more divisive, in a way, by being a woman.

  • According to moral foundations theory, there are six pillars through which humans perceive morality

    1. Caring
    2. Fairness
    3. Liberty
    4. Authority
    5. Loyalty
    6. Sancity

The first three are known as individualizing foundations and the last three are known as binding foundations.

Liberals tend to prioritize the first three. Conservatives tend to prioritize all equally which can lead to some contradicting world views. But the last three are less important to liberals so are more apparent among conservatives.

Conservatives in general have higher threat sensitivity. They are very in-group focussed. They believe that authority is morally just for maintaining order within a group, loyalty can often matter more than caring or fairness and that the sanctity of the group and its traditions are paramount.

This is where Poilievre needs to be very careful. Canadian conservatives perceive America as a legitimate outgroup threat and so their love language right now would be authority, loyalty and maintaining the sanctity of Canadian traditions.

Essentially, they would swoon over the Canadian version of Trump but that doesn't exist so what are our options? Right now, Carney has the advantage of being prime minister and taking a relatively strong stance against Trump.

Trudeau and Ford rushed over to the US to beg for exceptions while Carney has said he isn't going there to talk until they at least acknowledge our sovereignty. He's speaking a conservative love language by being authoritative.

Unless Poilievre can flip that script, he's going to have to get used to going from front runner to underdog at the flip of a switch. Starting with being "respectful but firm" is a weak response which will hurt his perception among conservatives.

  • I don't think the onus is on Palestinian civilians who are survivors of war to answer to that. The onus is on those providing aid to ensure it's used for its intended purpose.

I've heard this argument many times before and question its intention. I wonder if Americans and other Westerners face a similar moral dillema everytime they pay taxes or engage in commerce with corporations that financially support morally questionable regimes or corporate practice. Somehow, I don't think that they do.

An election from 15 years ago does not disqualify those in suffering from aid today or in perpetuity. I'm glad that the government of Canada agrees with that.

  • Immigrants did still vote for Kamala as a majority (55%).

I wasn't aware of the massive jump Trump had achieved with young men. Looks like it was especially true with young white men, with nearly two thirds voting for Trump. Less than 30% of young men from other racial demographics voted for Trump with the exception of Latinos (45%).

Overall the biggest jumps were with Latinos and young white men but he saw an increase in nearly of every demographic except older white people with whom he has historically had majority support.

  • Hamas is a terrorist organization. Discussing their political platform is of little value. If we're reflecting on historical circumstances honestly, Israel and Western powers have played a major role in bringing them into existance.

Humanitarian aid for civilian victims of Israel's 'collective punishment' strategy is morally right.

Your attempts at conflating Hamas with all Palestinians is a meek attempt at justifying genocide.

If you're interested in bringing forth a good faith argument, I'm open to hearing it.

Until then I'm content with taking pride in my country for bringing aid to those in need. It's just one part of what makes Canada great.

  • The 9/11 firefighters bill is evidence that Jon doesn't have the stomach for day to day politics. He handled it well but he has spoken repeatedly on how frustrating the experience was. I doubt that, at this stage in his career, he'd want to do that everyday.

I don't think Jon would make a good politician. He's an exceptional communicator and has all the ideas that progressives want to see get attention but the day to day of politics is soul sucking and doesn't seem like it's his cup of tea.

  • Canada pledges nearly $100M for Palestinians in Gaza, West Bank

Sorry I missed where it says the money is going to Hamas?

If you're implying their governments are actually democratically elected terrorist organizations, neither territory has held an election in over 15 years.

Glad that Canada is choosing to be on the right side of history with this move, and with its support for Ukraine.

  • Part of what makes Canada great is that it's charter of rights and freedoms upholding individual self expression, as long it does not bring harm to others.

A piece of cloth on a person's head, whether it's a hijab, turban, kippah or nun's veil brings no harm to others.

This is a misstep and a breach of Canadian values in my opinion.

  • Trump is a vibe. Most elections are determined on vibes. Less educated white folk feel he's their guy. It doesn't matter that his stated policies will fuck them. They feel like he'll look out for their interests and that's really all it takes. Galvanizing this demogtaphic is how he won both the 2016 and 2024 elections.

  • People romanticize farming because it was the basis of society and its economy 100 years ago. Agriculture was key to human survival for millenia before that.

In our increasingly tech driven lives, there's something pure about your work being dedicated to cultivating the earth and bringing sustenance to people.

But there are modern US farm owners that harken the image of plantation owners during America's chattel slavery era. Exploiting undocumented workers with undignified working conditions and paying them insufficiently in exchange for irreversibly wearing down their bodies.

  • She's a young, outspoken woman of color. Old white people would never let it happen, even if half are in a nursing home mainlining Fox News straight into their frontal cortex and can barely walk on their own.

A lot of folk are still recovering from Obama being elected twice.

At least Bernie looks familiar to them, so the hatred will be tampered.

  • I recall that from many years ago. Some of the wayward white American culture on that site is definitely off putting. That user was generally received well which says a lot about the soul of a community (or if it even has one).
