It's "free and open" in the sense that you can create your own Lemmy instance and rule it how you wish. Other people are under no obligation to interact with you though.
Likewise, different communities have different norms and strictnesses. Follow the rules of their home or make your own.
Hate to be a downer, but that would probably devolve into either Politics, people complaining about lack of features or critiscisms of certain decisions.
Okay, this nerd sniped me super hard. Sure you can spend it on a big massive project like a mansion or whatever, but you aren't going to be able to have it finished (and thus paid for) in a month.
Not too mention if you do want to drop that much money at one, there'll be many checks in place. Your bank will block your account for "suspicious activity". The person who you are paying will probably want to run a background check or just refuse to take payment up front.
You'd have to justify where you got that money from as well, most likely, and saying a "genie" probably would get you some strange looks and perhaps arrested.
I legit don't know how you'd actually get rid of that much money in a month.
Debian sid is their unstable branch; it contains all new packages before they are tested. As such, if you try to install updates from it, you'll likely get a very unstable system.
I think the time to do that has already passed; the Steam Deck and even Linux gaming in general has really taken off, so it would impact far more people than before. In addition, I think the EU has started breathing down their neck and will pounce on them if they do anything so blatantly monopolistic.
So this hypothetical "Direct X 15" would be limited to only Windows 11 users outside of europe, and the games wouldn't be distributable through Steam. I can't see that being a good pitch to developers, even if DirectX15 was really good.
They also tried this waay back in Windows 8 with the Windows Store, and it honestly was a flop.
The US doesn't have the ability and/or willingness to force Russia to comply with any of their demands. Therefore any deal has to be in agreement with the Russian state, which means their war demands. That means either the US pulls military support and Ukraine are unable to fight back, or the talks go nowhere and nothing really changes. There is no motivation for Russia to accept the current front lines.
... Although, like I said, my knowledge of this conflict is a little spotty - someone in the audience let me know if my read of the situation is correct.
I've not been following the Ukrainian war recently, but wouldn't the US surrendering Ukraine result in the erasure and eradication of Ukrainian culture. Which would likely result in more deaths than the war itself?
Hope that important infrastructure like payment methods and social media end up heading to Europe. Maybe, if I can, let a particular friend from the States seek asylum and live with me.
Honestly, whichever one you want. You could probably continue down the rabbit hole of which option is "better" or more closely fits some idealised standard. But ultimately, both methods solve your problem well enough.
So, for context - I live in Scotland and I guess I feel a cultural connection with being Scottish. I even have a domain with a .scot tld.
But at the same time... I know the UK is kind of slipping back in terms of social issues - starting to feel like a "mini US" than a state with european standards.
So yeah, I'm torn between staying here and moving to some as of yet unknown country with better rights...
Although, since I basically never travel and nothing is really infringing my freedom (yet ...), I'll probably not actually do anything even if I wanted to.
I think anyone who wishes harm on another has some issues they need to work through. Not just people who want to shoot up schools or whatever, but also people who feel so much hate for certain minority groups, or get too involved in sensationalist media.
I honestly think giving each child a yearly "checkup" with a psychologist where they can air greivences and get support would improve the quality of life of so many children.
So many people are scared and angry nowadays (and for good reason), yet don't know if any healtht coping mechanisms.
