  • First few paragraphs of the post:

Today, we’re excited to announce that the Bluesky network is federating, or opening up in a way that allows you to host your own data. What does this mean?

Your data, such as your posts, likes, and follows, needs to be stored somewhere. With traditional social media, your data is stored by the social media company whose services you've signed up for. If you ever want to stop using that company's services, you can do that—but you would have to leave that social network and lose your existing connections.

It doesn't have to be this way! An alternative model is how the internet itself works. Anyone can put up a website on the internet. You can choose from one of many companies to host your site (or even host it yourself), and you can always change your mind about this later. If you move to another hosting provider, your visitors won't even notice. No matter where your site's data is managed and stored, your visitors can find your site simply by typing the name of the website or by clicking a link.

We think social media should work the same way. When you register on Bluesky, by default we'll suggest that Bluesky will store your data. But if you'd like to let another company store it, or even store it yourself, you can do that. You'll also be able to change your mind at any point, moving your data to another provider without losing any of your existing posts, likes, or follows. From your followers' perspective, your profile is always available at your handle—no matter where your information is actually stored, or how many times it has been moved.

Federation lets services be interconnected, so there are a variety of apps and experiences that users can move between as fluidly as they do on the open web.The version of federation that we’re releasing today is intended for self-hosters. There are some guardrails in place to ensure we can keep the network running smoothly for everyone in the ecosystem. After this initial phase, we’ll open up federation to people looking to run larger servers with many users. For a more technical overview of what we’re releasing today and how to participate, check out the developer blog.

Some of our existing features already follow the federated philosophy, including usernames and feeds. Today, we’re opening up federation for data hosting. Below, we wanted to answer some common questions about what federated hosting is, what it means for your experience using Bluesky, and why we’re so excited about it.

  • I'm still just so furious at Signal management for removing compatibility with other text apps. I used to be constantly growing my Signal network, now it's a slowly shrinking rump that I never add anyone to.

  • Oh I think the negative feedback is also an important part of that system. Without them you get too much dumb content that appeals to some minority of people who are fooled by it while others are helpless to take action to bury it.

  • If someone has evidence that something is wrong they should definitely comment, but an at least as valuable service they can do for their fellow readers is make it less likely they'll ever see that incorrect post in the first place. You're only going to scroll for so long and see so many posts, somehow the decision on what the top posts are needs to be made. If not the collective judgment of the readers, what's a better way of making that choice? As I said, the actual existing other options seem to be some kind of algorithm, usually tracking you and giving you content based on your past activity, or some person just decides. Neither seems like a stronger protection against promoting bad content than letting readers decide to upvote or downvote.

  • I think it's still worth it (and I am the OP for what that's worth). I like the upvote / downvote system as a way to work together with others to surface good content and reject bad content. Not perfect, but better than just relying on an algorithm or individual editor.

  • Dems have definitely been consistently more pro-union than Republicans, but not nearly as pro-union as they used to be or could be. Biden has actually been a serious move in that direction in terms of his NLRB appointments and rhetoric, but there's a lot farther to go.

  • That analogy makes nonsense of your description of humanity metastasizing into space though - the equivalent being a cancer expanding and gathering resources from outside of the body it's embedded in? If anything it's the obvious solution to the problem of our putting too much strain on Earth's ecosystem - let us spread that strain to other worlds where there's no ecosystem to damage.

  • Yeesh sounds like you are down on humanity generally, referring to the growth of our civilization as "metastasizing" like it's a cancer. I don't expect that expanding into space will solve any big metaphysical problems or anything, but you shouldn't turn your nose up so quickly at the benefits of growth. The first space settlements beyond little research outposts probably will be some kind of resource extraction, since any human settlement needs to be economically viable and that's what they've got up there. I'd be very happy to make the world a lot richer with cheap raw materials while reducing the need for environmentally damaging mining on Earth where there's an environment to damage.

  • What is bluesky? Basically a twitter clone that was spun off as it's own thing by the twitter team that was working on federation when Musk took over. It's pretty good if you liked the pre-Musk twitter vibe or a slightly smaller scale and leftier version of it.
