What Is It That the Generals Are Telling Us About Trump?

  • I don't think I can agree with you there. Solar power is an incredibly valuable technology, in many ways more so than nuclear. If we were replacing this nuclear energy with increased solar I'd have no complaint. The problem is solar is already growing as fast as it can with or without shutting down any nuclear plants, so what it's actually replaced with as discussed in this article is fossil fuels. Hopefully the solar curve can catch up eventually and shut down those fossil fuels as well, but it's ridiculous to ditch nuclear before then.

  • Aaron Rupar is a known face in the landscape of journalism. He has worked on firms such as Minnesota Premier Publication, Voice Media Group, State of Minnesota, Center for American Progress, Fox9, and Vox Media Inc. in capacities ranging from reporter, writer, social media manager to editor and many more.

  • I like democracy because it tends to produce more of the results that I like than authoritarianism. A dictatorship that sustainably produces better results than democracy would by definition be better, but from what I can tell that's not possible.

  • Your question avoids the biggest issue with that sort of dictatorship - the fact that it replaces peaceful electoral competition for power with force, that can as easily result in chaos and civil war as a stable dictatorship.

With that off the table, the big issue is that kind of benevolent dictatorship has a tendency to start off strong and then decay as the original ruling clique who actually had some ideals die off and are replaced by their subordinates who got into working in an autocratic government for the power. Too bad Bernie is so old, we wouldn't get that many years of him on top. Not worth it in the long run even if you do get some policy benefits in the short run. Unless you think the odds of Trump becoming a dictator instead are high enough that it's better to take a chance on a better dictator, which is the kind of calculation that results in the civil wars and such I mentioned above.

  • Probably just a minor processing error in your sound driver and nothing to worry about. I think I have had a similar experience with a particular white noise machine with hearing some slightly patterned sound when there wasn't really a pattern. If it's bothering you or increasing can't hurt to go see a doctor (well can't hurt too bad as long as you're insured...) and get their input.

  • I believe the idea is that they're not federating with any other existing site, they're creating a new variety of federation with themselves as the first member, with people being able to set themselves up as additional independent nodes in that federation.

  • In my opinion, relying on upgrading users automagically to an encrypted and secure protocol isn’t good practice. If someone wants to use an encrypted chat, they should do so consciously. It will only cause confusion otherwise.

This is my theory for why they ditched this feature - the ultra-concerned about privacy superusers don't approve of its messiness, even though in practice it's the main engine for user growth.

Do people still use SMS these days though anyway?

I would have thought iMessage, RCS and separate chat apps like Whatsapp, Signal and WeChat would have largely replaced SMS by now.

SMS, MMS, iMessage and RCS are all compatible with each other and mostly used interchangeably and are the main way people text each other (in the US anyway). You just have a phone number, and when people text it with any of those formats you receive the message and respond the same way.

  • Right, the idea was that you could use Signal as your SMS app, and so whenever there was someone else doing the same you'd automatically upgrade to Signal. Whereas now I never have those auto-upgrades, any new contact I am just stuck on SMS with.
