@Darken I remember I once had all my messages disappeared (because of something that I did). Luckily, WhatsApp already backed up my messages a couple of days before. So I simply uninstalled the app, then reinstalled it and selected the backup to restore. A few messages from my work group were gone forever, indeed - those sent after the backup was taken - but they weren't an issue for me. Nothing important was sent in that time frame. With the backup I recovered pretty much more than 99% of the messages.
@andrewbidlaw You can simply see this data on any Friendica instance if you have an account. Just hover your mouse over the like/dislike numbers, and you can see who upvoted/downvoted shit. You can even receive notifications about this on your own posts, just as on Facebook.
To me, it was funny back in the day to see all tankies brigading to downvote me on any single post or comment I made, the moment I started showing my political stances 😆 (yes, even stuff posted before that had no political stuff in them, lol). But yea. To some people, this might be a drawback.
The good thing, however, is that neither Kbin nor Friendica show you a centralized place in your profile to see what did you downvote. You just have to search every post you can find to see this info.
Indeed, only secret chats use it, that's it's biggest drawback.
Last time I used Telegram I needed a phone number still
Yes, for registering purposes. However, you can set up your own username and give that to whoever you want instead. You can even restrict some or all people from seeing your actual number.
@cron I don't know if I'd fill one of those 60TB with either Steam or non-Steam games. But I have a different question: why struggling with incompatible hardware? Like, okay, you got an adapter, but isn't that thing too physically big for your Deck?
@PolarisFx AntennaPod (if you're on Android) can batch download all of a podcast's episode. Then you can edit the files to trim them and remove the ad part.
@henfredemars I think Android is doing enough to keep my data safe. Google on the other hand...
So yea, if you really care about privacy, disable every Google service that you can (without affecting the normal functioning of your device) and use F-Droid to install all your apps. Also, use open source alternatives wherever possible.
@PerogiBoi you still have the problem of hardware. Once that gets destroyed, every bit of information on that is lost forever. Maybe if we could find a way to be stored in rocks or trees or something like that. We would likely share some space with bacteria in that situation lol.
@YugiohMaster88 not really free, but maybe you can get a cheap PC from a thrift store or something like that (not first hand) and install Linux on it, then set it up as a Nextcloud server. If you live in a small flat like me then this is likely not possible though.
@U2VuZCBudWRlcyA6KSAK There's also Beeper for pretty much all the most popular services. Should be more private than using the 1st party Facebook apps.
