  • I'm definitely looking into the Ondsel flavour of freecad after work, I've been using standard freecad with the Modern UI Workbench which makes it feel a bit more like other cad packages to me.

Yeah pan and rotate are on middle mouse click, for me it's a "this button manipulates your view" so it's intuitive for me, for freecad I think I settled on opencascade, tried open inventor and I definitely misclick at times so I'd unintentionally rotate my view. I honestly haven't tried rebinding but from a quick look yeah no it doesn't support that, does have a ton of shortcuts though.

Maker is fine if you're like me and aren't looking into doing a home business, but even then I do have annoyances with lock in and frankly non-windows support, my lab computer runs mint and my laptop runs debian. Be nice to use one solution across the board.

  • I use solidworks maker because they had a crazy good discount last year and it's the cad package I used in uni and work when I was more mech focused. The licencing checks are mildly annoying but otherwise it feels like what I recall solidworks feeling like, does include the part toolbox which is really nice (ots items like bearings, scews etc. Really nice for assemblies). If I recall there's another downside with the files, don't recall if they can be opened in non-maker solidworks or not, believe that was a restriction with the educational version.

Maybe its just the familiarity with the tool (though it's been years) but I found SW really easy to go from hand sketch or idea to part, maybe its the part focused nature of solid works or the sketch focus but I found it somewhat transferable to freecad, although the mouse controls are a bit whacky to me. I honestly couldn't get into fusion, which is odd because I remember getting on with AutoCAD and Inventor.

In the end I feel you on wanting to like freecad, I'd really rather use a Foss solution for my personal work.

  • I wouldn't be surprised if prusa has a lab for qa purposes and they used that for the testing. And yeah I totally get it, I'd assume that at least prusament entries are up to date.

On a plus, definitely feel like I see mech props in product info more often, I've been using Canadian Filaments Carbon Capture PETG lately, they give UTS, Tensile Modulus and Impact Strength.

  • So prusa totally does maintain a material props page it's not exhaustive nor does it have full details for every filament they list but it does have a lot of info. Includes into about hotend and bed temps, enclosure and surface recommendations, deflection temperature, impact resistance and tensile strengths.

Might be a good place to start, love the idea of an open, community maintained mech props db

  • I'm about to try some phaetus hardened steel w/ some sort of coating, if they work I can pick up 2-3 of them for the price of 1 nozzle x (which has been my go to for a while) from the vendor I usually buy from. Changing nozzles is a pain on a stock V6 style hotend when you're all thumbs like me, I'm using dragon HF and UHF hotends for more or less common spares and almost one handed nozzle changes.

If I get to trying the new nozzles this weekend, I'll give an update.

  • I've literally never had issues like this with Linux updates, tbf I use Debian and Debian derivatives so maybe that's why (Debian on my laptop, Ubuntu server on my nas/server, Debian and Mint for my 3d printers). On the other hand I've had horrible experience with Bluetooth in windows for audio, some devices losing audio mid meeting but remaining connected for examole.

  • I used a lepotato on my last project in place of a pi3 but libre computer totally has rockchip boards available as well. Price wise seemed decent, documentation was decent enough for me and more importantly I could actually get one.

  • I went from 1080p60 as my standard for literal decades to 3440x1440 @144hz over the last 2 years and I can't go back, mostly for non-gaming activities, find the ultrawide better than multi monitor for me, would love a vertical e-ink display though for text. I also limit my fps to 120, I don't like feeling like my PC is going to take off and the place I rent is older so the room I use for my office is smaller, heats up quickly.

  • Anecdotal, I've not actually had a lot of instances (if any) of Spotify having something but Tidal not, usually find albums that I'm interested in from band camp no problem and if it's missing its missing on both. Sound quality is noticeably higher which is the reason I tend to prefer, the app has gotten better in my experience

I have all my digital copies on my NAS with jellyfin to stream them as well, sometimes it's just easier to stream off tidal or Spotify though

  • Don't discount us, Gavin McInnes and Jordan Peterson are both Canadian and Harper currently heads the IDU.

There was the whole proroguing of parliament too after they had a non-confidence vote and an ndp-liberal coalition with bloc and green party supporter was proposed, fell through during that period and the Tories attacked coalitions as somehow being illegal or undemocratic.

  • Windows + C is apparently already the keyboard shortcut for copilot, which is actually what I was going to suggest as an alt to a dedicated button. Actually there's a bunch of windows key combos I wasn't aware of, I can kinda see why they want a dedicated button as I don't think most people know that there are a lot of keyboard shortcuts in windows based on my experience.

  • The 880s are bulletproof, I daily drove mine for a decade (even back then recommendation was also audiophile headphones and a mic) before replacing the pads and modding them to have a detachable cable. I use a pair of DT1990 now with the same dekoni audio pads I used on my 880s, I keep meaning to get some other headphones for variety but I've honestly had no complaints with Beyerdynamic.

  • Quebec is almost entirely hydro, Ontario is primarily nuclear and hydro, there are no operating coal plants in Ontario last I checked, just some gas plants. Those 2 provinces alone are just over 60% of the country, looking at the latest energy future report something like 81% of Canada's power capacity is from renewables and nuclear, 61% being hydro.

  • All my active rolls are in dryboxes with a bunch of dessicant, I'm probably going to try setting up a solution that lets me use even more dessicant. I use a dryer for new spools, even sealed stuff can pick up moisture for things like petg and definitely stuff like nylon. I printed 4 of these https://blog.prusa3d.com/dryboxes-and-alternative-spool-holders-not-only-for-multimaterial-upgrade_30525/ with these to support to spools https://www.printables.com/model/445085-ptfe-tube-roller-for-drybox and some Bowden hookups +some dessicant inserts

I live in Canada, it gets super humid in the summer so I find I'm having to change dessicant often, don't open more than I need to.
