  • Again, why? For what purpose?

  • Anyone who timed it perfectly, sure. Some people thought the market had hit bottom and it just kept falling.

It has happened 100% of the time so far

And everything that has happened in the past will definitely always happen in the future. Like, it's June 1990 in Japan, just buy the dip. The market always goes up. It's just a correction.

  • Imagine even a business that is supposed to benefit from tariffs, like garment manufacturing. Previously it wasn't worth it because other countries could do it cheaper. So, now you could set up a garment factory and start making things in the US. You can buy cotton from Texas, spin it into yarn, make that yarn into cloth, do it all from seed to finished garment all in the USA.

But, can you really trust that these tariffs are going to be around for the long haul? If you invest $200k to start making clothing in the US, then Trump, the master negotiator, does a deal with Bangladesh and their tariffs go to zero again there's no way you can compete and you're out $200k.

Even if you're extremely lucky and already had a US-based business that was surviving vs. overseas competition, would now be a good time to ramp up production? Sure, your goods are now much cheaper than your competitor's goods, but with the economy cratering is anybody going to be buying?

There are times when tariffs can work extremely well for certain lucky companies, but they have to be targeted long-term tariffs. Not this chaos.

  • I wonder how it works though. Do they get finished laptops off a ship from China, or do they do final assembly in the US?

If they do anything in the US, then they'll have to pay import tariffs to get the things they're using, and then have to make up that tariff when selling it to other countries. I assume that the only way to avoid tariffs is to avoid any part of their products ever entering the US. But, how easy is it to change their business so despite being a US-based business their products avoid the US entirely?

  • Is anybody going to buy them when the price triples?

  • And if that camp is in another country like El Salvador, they'll tell the judge there's nothing they can do because US laws don't apply in El Salvador.

  • Ok, so there's a tumblr hashtag, but again. For what?

  • They are supposed to fly you from A to B on a given day at a given time.

Sure... but you're not buying a guarantee that will happen. If you want to buy a first-class ticket, you're paying for the privilege of not being bumped. If you're buying an economy-class ticket you're getting a discount because you're not guaranteed a seat.

having to force bump a passenger because no one took the bait money is what I would like to see be not ever a thing companies try to get away with.

If you did that most planes would end up flying with a minimum of 10% of the seats empty. As a result, passengers would have to pay significantly more for their tickets.

With the current setup, the airlines oversell every plane, but most of the time everyone still gets a seat. The airlines know that roughly 5-10% of the passengers never make it to the gate and claim their seat. Some people change their mind at the last minute. Some miscalculate traffic. Some are on connecting flights that get delayed.

It's pretty rare that an airline has to bump passengers, and they hate it when they have to do it. It screws with their whole schedule and eats into their profits. But, having to occasionally do that is worth it for them because they get to run many more flights at 98% capacity or something, rather than 90% or even 80%.

  • Yeah, I used to have a pair like that. If you don't like poking at your ear, the in-line controls are nice. But, in winter those can often get buried in your scarf/coat which is a bit annoying.

You might be interested in what some other people have said in the thread about bluetooth remotes.

There are somewhat expensive ones that seem to be meant for either steering wheels or handlebars, and ultra-cheap ones that are basically a handheld remote. Some others are designed to be worn as rings. I might see if one of those will work inside a mitten. It could be ideal for winter. Maybe it's useful for you too.

  • Nice, that's probably usable with gloves or mittens.

  • I'm sure there are some Nazis in Ukraine, just like there are some in Russia, some in Germany. I would expect there are even some in Israel.

But, OP was talking as if Ukraine is uniquely Nazi. And, later on he/she claimed that "Nazis have ruled Ukraine since 2014 US sponsored coup that installed them in power", despite the fact that Zelenskyy is jewish.

  • I have relatives in Mexico, I visit regularly and we go for tacos all the time. There are lots of varieties of different kinds of tacos. Meat-stuffed tacos are not the norm in Mexico. Most of them only have a little meat and a lot of sauce. That's what allows them to be sold incredibly cheaply. You can easily get a dozen tacos from the taco stand on the corner for what one taco will cost at taco bell. Because they're so cheap, you can get a lot of variety from just one visit: suadero, lengua, carnitas, etc.

Taco Bell isn't as good, and the flavours aren't completely authentic, but it still obviously a taco. When my cousin visits Canada/USA he prefers to get burritos (from Chipotle) because he can't get them where he lives in Mexico and he loves them. He doesn't get tacos because they're tacos, and he can get much better ones in Mexico.

  • Hmm, that's a reason to avoid them then. Who knows what will happen to their customer support if they stop selling earbuds.

  • Um... like you boop your own nose to skip forward?

I found an article about them. Apparently they sense vibrations, so you need to tap near them.

I don't think I'll go with those, I don't want open ear designs, I want something that can block traffic sounds. I also worry that something that is vibration sensitive would be confused by the movement of a hat or scarf in winter. And since they're Sony, they're way too expensive to buy just to see if they maybe work.

Thanks though, if nothing else, it's interesting to know about new technologies they're using.

  • I'm not sure if this is supposed to be a joke or something, but yes. More than 90% of the people in Quebec speak French. More than 50% speak English, but for most it's a second language.

  • Wow, thanks for the link. I haven't seen one that cheap before. I was looking at a more expensive name-brand one but it's like 10x more expensive. The one you suggested is cheap enough that I can take a shot and see if it's something that might work.

  • Definitely true of people who want power for the sake of having power. There are some who want power because it's what they need to make the improvements they think the world needs -- I'd put someone like Bernie Sanders in that list.
