  • Yeah. I wish there had been an alternative way back then. I wasn’t in circles to find out about the fediverse.

I quite liked the self hosted forums but people you knew/mainstream moved to other social media and you had to be there to stay in touch or have opportunities to attend community events. And when you leave they don’t. Massive social trap.

  • Yes. It sucks that the onus is further being put on individuals. While companies and wealthy people that consume energy or pollute on a massive scale don’t seem to face the same restrictions

(As someone who already drinks non-dairy and can’t eat meat.)

  • Yeah I regret. And it’s probably more than I’ll ever be able to attempt.

Right now I just need to get my stuff backed up to physical media in time and make sure I can continue to use my main email.

  • I made repeated attempts so - 69kb, then 1.2kb. Probably too large.

Some other guy was complaining about this so I began manually downloading - and then saw that I could ctrl-a and copy the contents of the OneDrive folder to paste it into a new folder. Once I think I have everything I’m unlinking.

  • Agreed… We are the product. But Meta are now doing things I never could have imagined when I signed up. They scraped all of the user data and pictures for AI and Australian users didn’t get to opt out.

Agreed about Microsoft being more subtle. It kind of crept up on me.

Oh man… I want to de google but I’m absolutely drowning at the moment and barely managing life admin let alone a mammoth task like that.

I still have to go through my Facebook to make sure I get everything before I deactivate or delete with the under 16 ban (because I’m not giving Meta or other platforms my id). And because the download doesn’t work I have to do it manually.

My respect goes out to people who are able to stay on top of all this

  • I thought to just download my OneDrive files onto my computer, back them up and unlink my pc so it couldn’t fill that storage back up again. Well downloading my stuff isn’t working. They download as zip files that only contain error and .txt.

I’m also now being told I can’t send or receive emails because I’m over storage and have to pay for more - recurring subscription of course.

It’s so very convenient that they force your files onto their cloud (removing them from your computer) and then somehow the process of getting them back is obstructive. Really slimy.

I may end up having to pay to get to the task later but this is making me seriously reconsider Windows.

Microsoft prey on fear uncertainty and doubt. Also on compatibility between organisations. The only reason I don’t walk for Linux is 1. I want to make sure I have everything first and 2. because I’m not confident of being able to reliably make everything work as I need it to.

  • I still haven’t been able to get the donations down but packed them into boxes. I’m hoping to shift those next week and get some space back. Melbcat got stressed out by the activity so I stopped and we’re doing phone in bed. Cuddles are required to relax.

One load of washing is done and I’m doing another. Then there’ll be another basket of folding to do on top of the one already there 😑 The chances aren’t great today.

  • It appears I have been so I gotta try and sort this out in case it prevents me sending or receiving emails and having to pay for more storage -_-

I’m being bullshitted in circles. At some point I probably should get a huge external drive and manually back everything up onto there. But then there’s the risk of it being lost or broken and losing everything. Not to mention the organisational load of having to sort it all out.

  • This is even worse. Trying to follow guides to pause syncing of OneDrive and nothing is as the guide said. So I poked around more and I now have the choice of pausing it for up to 24 hours or unlinking it completely.

At this point I feel like Microsoft is expensive spyware but I don’t have the energy to jump through all the hoops to control it or make the switch 😔
