Yeah I heard some stuff about it at the time but not much. About 5 years later I started reading an article about it but only got like 2 paragraphs in before I remembered why I never paid attention to it the first time around and quit reading.

Surely there's a middle ground between "laws don't matter" and "it's too bad we can't do anything at all". Dems don't even pretend to try.

Gamergate was at least easy to ignore. I still don't really know what it was about. Always seemed like pointless internet drama to me. That may or may not be true but it hasn't been a problem to stay ignorant about the topic. You can't ignore what's happening now unless you don't use the internet at all and even that isn't going to be completely effective.

I don't have time to read this currently but I will try to later. In the meantime, does anyone know how they are coercing access to these devices? I've done a fair amount of international travel and no one has ever asked about any of my devices, much less attempted to gain access to them. It's my understanding that if you refuse them there's no legal reason they could refuse you entry.

Obviously, legality is of less concern to this administration but these people should have legal recourse, at least until the facade of civility is completely cast aside.

To be fair to some of those people, they're not all being unintentionally malicious. I used to call myself a centrist but that was in the transition phase between "conservative because everyone I know is" and "I have formed my own beliefs". For most people that's what the process of developing their opinions looks like. You don't swing right from one extreme to the other. You take baby steps along the way. You start to see the cracks in what people around you are saying but you still mostly hear exaggerated caricatures of what the alternatives are so you're sort of stuck in the middle because you don't know where else it's even possible to go.

The problem is not the minority or gender association, it's the platform. People said a black man couldn't win the presidency until Obama ran as a progressive and won handily. I don't give two shits that Kamala Harris wasn't white or a man. Biden was both of those things and I didn't like him any better. I still voted for both of them because even a wet dog turd is better than Trump, but we need people to get excited about an alternative, not just vote against Trump.

You do have to give them your fingerprints if you get a concealed carry license (in the states I'm familiar with at least). That may not be the best plan if your intent is to protect yourself from a tyrannical government. I'm not saying it's a bad idea just something to consider before you pull the trigger, metaphorically speaking of course.

Not from where they're sitting. We have to make this a true statement through collective action. Lemmy, and other decentralized forms of communication, will likely need to play a central role in organizing those actions. They're not going to let us work towards removing their power using the platforms they control.

I would assume the real reasoning is along these lines but I imagine there's also some kind of waste reduction throw away reasoning meant to give the rubes enough cover to pretend it's not morally reprehensible behavior.
