  • buy your own domain name for cheap (like $10-$30 USD/year) and setup your A records (and CNAME records if you want) in the hosted DNS section.

Does it matter if your domain is on shared hosting already? Like, I’ve got kaitco.net, so I should be able to set up jellyfin.kaitco.net and the A and/or CNAME in the hosted DNS? Or, would I need to purchase a new one that’s not already hosted on any server already?

Thank you for answering my asinine questions about this btw 😅

  • I’ll have to check again on the Jellyfin docs, but when I was las trying to follow the steps, I ran into an issue where some IP didn’t match something else and it told me I couldn’t continue.

My friend uses a Roku so getting him to use Tailscale or anything like it isn’t really an option.

  • Any thoughts on using something like Caddy, or any other reverse proxy option, if you already have a VPN that you pay for?

Currently I’m using Tailscale for my phone and tablet, but there’s not really an option for Roku outside of my home network. I’d like to give a friend access to my Jellyfin, but I can’t seem to get anything working other than Tailscale because I already pay for ProtonVPN.

  • I’m going through TNG for the first time, and I’m approaching it with the idea that you’ve got to take in everything on a first round, the good, the bad, and Lwaxana Troi episodes.

I’ve got admit, though, every time I see her or a Ferengi, all my baser violent Klingon-esque urges come out, and I’d like to take a shotgun to my TV.

  • There are Tab Groups add-ons for Firefox. I’m sure there might be vertical tab add-ons, too.

As someone who never went to Chrome, I’m just sitting here trying not to be all “I told you so!” from when Chrome started to really take off a decade ago.

  • I mean…I still owe $8K and I spent the last three years paying directly to the principal as well. That said, I still hate this. Rather than being able to pay off in another year or so, it’s going to be closer to five years.

There’s options available. Like, how about a “step up” rather than just reopening the floodgates? Turn on the repayments, but not the interest. How about keep the interest off the last $20K if you’re not in the rears? Allow people to get a chance to make progress on their debts, or at least give an incentive on keeping the payments current.

A direct return to the status quo doesn’t get lenders their money in a time of rising rates, and it definitely doesn’t help those in debt nor the overall economy.

  • Nah, that’s not an option. I’ve been on iOS since 2009. It’s not really beneficial to move to Android.

Plus I’ve got an Android as my second phone and I’m not a fan of moving to the platform as my main device.

Samsung is silly with their extra store that I can’t remove, I don’t find that the same apps are as polished as their iOS counterparts, I don’t like the way Android does app-switching, I don’t like that there are some apps like Facebook that can be disabled, but not actually removed from the phone, and on my previous phone (moved from an S8 to an S10e) I repeatedly received Samsung ads about newer devices being available. I dislike that the apps themselves are constantly running in the background and that I feel like I have to be conscious of my RAM usage or mindfully close out apps. On iOS, I can have 2 apps or 200 running with no difference in how the phone runs.

There’s also a lot of work necessary to remove things that I don’t like on Android, like removing their extra “gaming overlay” that’s entirely unnecessary, and then there’s general things that I don’t like such as not having a “tap to top” like iOS has.

I do like that Android let’s you sideload apps and choose/customize your launcher, but given that I’ve never really taken advantage of things like extra Home Screens on iOS and the only apps I sideload are emulators, those aren’t game changers for me. I’ve also got an Apple Watch and iPad and things all work best when they’re all within the same ecosystem.

As for privacy, between the two, I would rather let Apple harvest and hold my data over Google. I don’t even like to use Google as my main search engine, and when I do, I’ve got on my VPN and I’m signed out of any account. Apple is selling the info as well, but their money-maker is more about hardware and less about data collection.

I get why some folks may prefer Android to Apple and even make the switch, but I’m not one of them.

  • I’ve got a 12 and will be upgrading to a 15 Pro mainly due to my current phone having a scratch and I really want the USB-C charging option so that I can finally have a single charger type for everything.

Outside of the USB-C change, I don’t see much of a difference between my current 12 and the base 15, hence why I’m going for the 15 Pro. If not for the USB-C, I’d be sticking with my lightly-scratched 12.

  • If you’re seeking higher education as a person of color, there are universities ready to just throw money at you to get you there. I say this as a former black student myself, the opportunities are available and BYU has got to be the absolute worst possible option for anyone who isn’t white and likely Mormon.

Attending BYU is a major disservice to any person of color because university is about both traditional education and also social education. One would be better off delaying education until better options present than attending that school. It isn’t like being black and going to Yale or something, or being white and attending an HBCU. It’s like attending The Himmler School for the Advocates of Anti-Semitism and as a Jew and being surprised that there are so many bigots on campus.

  • That’s the thing, though. They don’t actually have rabid supporters. Trump does, and they want his supporters to support them.

That’s why no one is interested in watching their debates. The people who actually care about debates aren’t interested in their nonsense, and the ones whose vote they are courting are just waiting for Trump to give them the Go signal.
