  • As I continue my Trekking adventure, I love understanding more and more of the memes. I just watched this episode for the first time a few days ago.

That said, as I continue watching Trek, I keep seeing how everything else in the world has ripped off Trek at one time or another. One of my favorite episodes of The X-Files lifted this entire plot; like, it’s just maddening how similar the stories are. 😡

  • I’ve been using Windex and Bounty. 😬 Probably not the best options, but they seem to get the job done for me.

I mention Bounty because regular paper towels are crap for that sort of thing.

  • IDK what’s worse…that this is a thing, or that I’m so accustomed to Amazon’s shenanigans that I’m used to heading into the dark web of results, aka Page 2, in order to find exactly what I’m looking for.

That said, charging cables are kind of a bad example. I’m prepared to spend $10 on a 6-pack of varying lengths of Brand X cables I’ll replace next year as opposed to one $25 Apple-approved MFi cable that I’ll also replace next year.

  • The game being available on both iOS and iPadOS should be a given. TVOS also feels like it should be a standard because of the way Apple’s ecosystem works. A MacOS addition is a nice change, but I’m still left wondering about the target audience for this.

If you’re a gamer, your “main” device isn’t usually within Apple’s ecosystem. Most of the Mac people I know who are gamers use consoles, so for them, it would make more sense to buy this for Xbox or PS5 and use either’s virtual play option to play on iPhone if desired. If you’re a PC gamer, the PC Xbox GamePass option is even better. Gaming on MacOS has always been something that you can do if you really want to make it work, but there have usually been better options available.

I’d like to see true mobile gaming take off, but until there is a sense of stability within the mobile space, I just can’t see it. Phones and tablets are different from consoles. I’m not going to carry around my old iPad 2 just to play my 32-bit mobile games, but I still have my original PS1, PS2, and Xbox 360 hooked up to TVs and can jump onto them anytime I’m home. I still play PC games I bought in 2002 on the PC I purchased in 2022. There’s usually some options available to make games designed for Windows XP run well on Windows 10 or 11.

With Apple in particular, there’s never going to be an option to jury-rig an iPhone to play mobile BioShock again, not without jailbreaking which sort of defeats the purpose of having an iPhone in the first place. That sort of thing is acceptable for maybe $10-15, but for the price of a full game, it feels like throwing a bundle of cash back and forth over an open fire and wondering when it will all get singed.

The mobile market has to make a different approach to “proper” gaming because the space itself is far different from console or PC gaming, and the first place to start is the price point.

  • 😂 Yeah, no.

Here’s the thing: I’ve been an iPhone user since the 3GS (over 14 years) and I’m highly skeptical that this price will sell. KotOR retails at $10 on the App Store as does San Andreas, and both go on sale down to $5 and lower very often. I believe the whole bundle for Final Fantasy 1-6 is like $65 and then FF7 is $15 or $16. Who is the audience for a $60 iOS game??

I recall when BioShock was originally available on the App Store. For one, it cost like maybe $15 at the most, but then it got pulled from the store and then the App Store made the change to 64-bit apps, meaning that even if you’d bought BioShock previously, it would no longer run on newer devices.

Over this last decade, I’ve watched fun, old school games get released for iOS and then pulled and then re-released as crappier MTX versions, if they got re-released at all, countless times. How is RE4 going to be any different?

Not sure if it’s an Apple issue or a developer issue, but for a $60 price tag, there’s got to be at least some sort of guarantee that an iOS update or App Store change won’t render the game suddenly unplayable on my device. iPhone 15 might be ready for AAA games but the App Store and iOS in general are not.

  • Fucking mirrors everywhere. Circular tables around the mirrors with decapitated heads for as far as the eye could see, all with horrific hairstyles and blank, expressionless faces.

This is the best description of cosmetology school that’s ever been written! 😂

  • Let’s say I’ve got a friend who bought a PS5 back in March, and this friend decided that she wanted to take part in this giveaway.

What are the pros and cons of this friend purchasing a new PS5, getting her free game (possibly Ghosts of Tsushima), and then returning the PS5 afterward? Because this sounds like a savings of $70 or so once it’s all done…for my friend.

  • I didn’t disregard the question. Plex and Jellyfin do the exact same thing and I described how to run them.

I also mentioned overall alternatives to his issue which is streaming his own content.

  • Running Jellyfin through a Roku works wonderfully. Jellyfin is a FOSS alternative to Plex and ran great on Roku, but ran poorly on Firestick, so it might just a Roku vs Firestick thing there.

Something else to consider is just buying a really cheap laptop for less than $200 or something and running Plex/Jellyfin or even just use your home network and play everything through VLC via HDMI on the laptop. You could even get a Chromebook and run Ubuntu on it and find an option for close to $100. A laptop option works well because you get to bypass ads and TVs operating system.

  • I realize this has become a non-tenable business for Netflix, I just wish they were willing to sell their stock to another company that wants to provide the same service.

I wish they would sell their stock as well and let someone else pick up the pieces. I’ve had this service since like 2006 or something; literally since before Blockbuster closed. I’ve watched hundreds of shows and films through them and even as I was trying to clear out my queue in this last couple months, there were still a ton that you just couldn’t find elsewhere.

The next closest thing will be to buy off Amazon or something as Used and just sell them back when I’m done, but it’s not the same. A bunch of my friends laughed when I said I was sad this service was ending because they were like “wtf? Who gets/uses DVDs??” But, this service has been a major source of entertainment for me over the years.

Like, you can always pirate anything popular, but getting into random French films that you’d never see elsewhere…The streaming collection has never been quite as robust because of various rights, and it’s even worse now that everyone has their own streaming service. This is very likely going to be the move that leads me to finally cancel Netflix entirely.

  • A friend sent me a job there and I’m extremely trepidatious about their approach. The job is supposed to be remote, but my current job is guaranteed remote, even after the company went through a wave of forcing some people back in the office.

That said, for the right paycheck, I could be persuaded back in-office, but dang if these folks don’t make it difficult…

  • There’s talk at my former employer of people not getting their incentives or bonuses if they haven’t been coming in on assigned days.

Lord forbid the workers have some comfort when they’re trying to live their lives.
