Part of it is definitely also that most people in the US don’t fully understand how the American empire works, nor do they want to. We’ve been committing a genocide against Latin Americans on our soil for at least a decade (holding them in prison without the right of habeas corpus because of suspicion of illegal immigration [not always proven], separating children from parents, and sterilizing women without informing them/obtaining their consent), and fucking their governments up abroad since at least teddy Roosevelt. Add Guantanamo Bay and our behavior in Africa and Central Asia (predatory loans and stipulated aid, mostly) and the Middle East, and we’re straight up ruining the world.
Everyone who wants to taste these: look up Oblaten at a baking supply store near you, they’re basically 20-30 cm diameter communion wafers, and they come in much smaller quantities than you’ll find at seminary stores. You probably won’t want to keep eating them, so it’s better to have to throw out five big ones than 499 small ones.
As someone who’s eaten too many communion wafers: it would probably not be good. They’re so bland that it would be too sweet and they don’t have a strong enough structure to hold up to molten marshmallows, imo.
Also, if you can get it through sex and IV drug use, you can get it through blood contact, which can happen in other ways. Why not protect against it? In case kids decide to become “blood brothers” or practice insufficient hygiene around other kids’ bloody noses or something
People generally start when they’re too young to really understand consequences, and there’s a tiny buzz you experience during the first few cigarettes. I think there’s an aspect of self-harm to the psychology of it as well (and obviously it is self-harm, but we don’t really think of it like cutting or something similar)
Everyone with parental rights must consent to an adoption, so it’s not the same thing. Parental rights are either terminated or transferred (generally when both parents die at the same time) upon death, so people who are single parents due to the death of the other parent would be the only ones with parental rights. Otherwise the parental rights of the non participating parent have already been severed (though most of the time, they do still have some rights and maintain a financial responsibility, they’re just not doing the actual parenting, meaning they would also need to consent to put the child up for adoption).
The egg could also harden gradually when exposed to air, as the vagina is acidic. Especially if fertilization occurs outside the body, like with amphibians and fish. Of course, there would need to be a liquid medium, but that could also be released with the egg.
Disclaimer: I’m not Muslim and didn’t grow up around many Muslims, but I now have a lot of contact with Muslims of varying strictness.
The phrasing in the Quran is not perfectly clear, but there are a few interpretations: all intoxicants are banned (including laughing gas, alcohol, and various medications); plant-based intoxicants are banned (including alcohol, Opium, hookah, tea, and tobacco); or intoxicants made from grapes or dates are banned (so vodka is fine).
I used to work at a hookah bar, and was always surprised that Muslims generally believe tea is fine (caffeine is an intoxicant), frequently believe hookah is fine (nicotine is definitely an intoxicant), and generally believe alcohol made from other sources is not okay. This seems like picking and choosing to me, but even the Muslims I know who drink tend to fall into this category and just feel guilty about it
Unfortunately, I am not delicate enough to seriously discuss this without offending people, so I don’t know why. I assume cultural norms outweigh the actual scripture (which happens with most religions and which I don’t think is necessarily a bad thing, but I’m generally in favor of harmless cultural norms and non religious).
The one that seems to me like the biggest deviation, to actually answer the question, is when pro-life christians are for the death penalty or hawkish about wars.
So far, so good on the real one (not buying weed anymore), but not great on the secondary one (hanging my laundry as soon as the washer is done instead of waiting too long and needing to wash it again).
A couple of days, but I was really sick. When healthy*, I’ll sometimes do 24 hours, but that includes big meals bookending that time. I do also tend to have coffee with oat milk, protein drinks, and/or juice during that time, so it’s not without nourishment, just without solid foods.
*don't be like me, kids. It’s not good to eat too sporadically (I’d be much worse about it if my husband were not basically samwise gamgee). I’ve got adhd and forget to eat sometimes, and I’ve noticed it’s always more difficult to eat if I’ve eaten very little lately.
Of course ethical shoplifting exists: stealing bread to feed a starving person or medication to help a sick one, etc.
