  • I think it has an effect, not inherently, but only because we then standardize schooling based on birth year, not actual age. Starting at four years and one month vs four years and eleven months (where I am, it starts even earlier, at two years and six months/three years and five months for kindergarten) means students are in a wildly different developmental stages. I don’t think it’s necessarily a lifelong thing, but at least during school, the kids who start at a later age are better at sports, so they’re more likely to make sports teams, which certainly affects your personality.

I would never say that I believe in astrology though.

  • You ever notice how few slaves throughout history were inventors? It’s similar: when your ideas are considered someone else’s intellectual property, you don’t get credit in history books. When you’re not allowed an education, it’s nearly impossible to take part in the philosophical zeitgeist. When your most productive years are spent in a continuous cycle of pregnancy, childbirth, and recovery, your creative potential is diminished.

  • I have a sensory thing about tags, only purchase undecorated, monochrome clothing, and have worn the paint off of my water bottle. Plus, I make my own lunch and pack it in metal Tupperware whose branding is also worn away. It’s wild to me that there’s an application for being a fucking weirdo, but I don’t have any visible ads on my person.

  • Tbh, it wasn’t even moving a lot of things (though I did bring my cat), just that unexpected things came up.

Opening a local bank account took, I shit you not, eleven weeks. From when I made the first appointment to when I got my visa, it took almost eight months, during which time my prospective job fell through (reasonably). My first landlord is still holding on to my security deposit and nearly evicted me with no notice (because of said cat, whose presence I negotiated before moving in) it’s not legal to do that at all here, but they were betting that a foreigner wouldn’t know the laws.

I was in a fortunate position and I had a lot of savings, but it was still really expensive to be able to be adaptable

  • Blending it will give you something that’s roughly the texture of a milkshake. If you cook it for a long time, you can get some liquid out to make things like egg bites, but I prefer to either use it as the basis for sauces or puddings or to strain it and break it up manually to sautee it in a tofu scramble.

  • An emergency fund is generally ~6-12 months of expenses. I recently migrated from the USA to Germany, which cost me about 30 months worth of expenses, all told. It could be done more cheaply, but there’s also a huge element of luck, so it would not be smart to assume that it will cost much less than 24 months worth of expenses.

  • This is not an answer to your question, but an adjacent thought.

Something we could do now that would have been helpful for the Rosetta Stone is including pictorial representations of the position of the mouth* while pronouncing the words. It’s not important for the meaning, but how cool would it be to know how ancient languages were pronounced? We’re not even totally certain how Latin was pronounced, and that’s both relatively recent and very well represented in the form of Romance languages.

*I began learning German as an adult native speaker of English and this was by far the most helpful thing for my pronunciation. I regularly stealth people on being a non native speaker, so I’d say it works.

  • It’s a lot more dangerous for the US to nuke Canada than it was to nuke Japan. As for more conventional attacks, not only would a Guerilla war against people who know American culture so completely and in the Canadian landscape suck, but the Canadian military is, uh, not to be fucked with.

The Canadians fought the Germans with a long, enduring, terrible, skilful patience

    -Philip Gibbs

the troops that had the worst reputation for acts of violence against prisoners were the Canadians

    -Robert graves

I don’t care for the English, Scotch, French, Australians or Belgians but damn you Canadians, you take no prisoners and you kill our wounded

-unknown German colonel, as recalled by Canadian soldier Fred Hamilton

  • I mean, in an ideal world, lots of things wouldn’t exist, but we don’t live in an ideal world and there are hungry people in every country, even those with robust food support systems. I live in Germany, where there is a lot of aid for those who are hungry and, whether it’s due to untreated mental health issues (including addiction) or something else, there are plenty of hungry people.
