Trilium is an excellent option, however, the original project is no longer maintained. There is a new community fork that is active here: https://github.com/TriliumNext/Notes

You can always export all of your notes in markdown format, but the notes are always saved in a database.

Glad to hear! Would you mind sharing how you migrated from OneNote? We would like to make that migration path easier for future migrants.

Currently there are no significant new features (although we do now offer a windows exe installer). The initial stable release was mostly back-end changes intended to make future development easier and more maintainable. Keep you're eye out though, since there are some new features in the works (2FA, Internationalization, and maybe some mobile improvements).

I can see your point, I should have clarified that I never use an external editor myself to edit the notes, I was just saying that you could do that if you needed to. I only export to Nextcloud so I can view it there just as I would have to save to Nextcloud if I was using Obsidian or some other file-based note-taking app.

I was just posting to get some eyes on the project in case there were some folks who wanted to join the community and help get things rolling even faster.

We actually plan to be able to do this! I am a OneNote convert and was able to convert everything to Trilium with quite minimal formatting issues.

I meant the title as a tounge and cheek reference, but I wasn't obvious about it!

Thanks for the clear explanation, that makes sense to me. For me, I just use Trilium for all of the above, so it doesn't affect me, but I could see how it would matter for those using it in the way you are 👍

I'm sorry, I didn't clarify that there is a small screen PWA as well. It is just stripped on some of the more advanced features.

The web app is identical to the desktop app. It is fully functional. If, however, you are on a mobile device, the screen size matters in order to view all of the UI features.

For reference, I have over 300,000 notes in Trilium, and it is runs smoothly 👍

This has been supported for a while using the Canvas Note Type.
