This is understandable and has been probably the most requested feature. So afaik the new organization is dedicated to providing native apps at some point after the initial stable release.

I actually quite like the simplistic UI, but this is actually a focus of the new TriliumNext organization - to improve the UI.

I've never quite understood why this is such a non-starter for most people. I just simply set up a script to export my Trilium notes to Nextcloud as flat files so I can still read my notes anywhere even without a Trilium client. Trilium also allows you to edit the notes with an external editor, and then you can just re-import the note to update the note in Trilium.

I think note cloning is unique - note clones were a game changer for me. Directories are notes too so you can add content to them just like any other note. The biggest advantage for me: its open source Server syncing is free without needing to use third party solutions.

Is there a demo instance? I could use that for testing of it exists.

It'd on my list but the self hosting setup is not straightforward (no docker image yet)

debian\ubuntu vm on proxmox. Then you can snapshot the whole deal and take easy backups of everything using proxmox backup server.

Future work on the project is being carried out in a new project called TriliumNext which had the blessing of the original developer. Trilium has a bright future in this fork 👍

This. Save yourself some time and just go with Trillium. It does not have a native mobile app yet, but when it does, there'll be nothing to compare! :P

The issue could still be a fail-to-band issue if fail-to-band is looking at the user agent string (I'm not sure fail to ban looks at the user agent string, but it might be worth checking out.). The user agent string would likely be different on a mobile app versus a browser login.

Trilium for personal use cases. It is very easy to host, edit, and navigate. Public sharing is easy too.

If you already run NextCloud, then NextCloud Memories (not photos) is very good.

Nextcloud maps works reasonably well although mobile view isn't great.

That's the beauty of next cloud in my opinion. You only need to enable the apps that you need. It would be nice if there was a little bit better discovery when it comes to finding apps. The app store is useful but only internal next cloud apps seem to be promoted there.

You're on the right track with nextcloud however using the built-in photos app is going to be very slow. You should install the nextcloud memories app and you will see a very significant improvement in speed.
