  • Where is that video of Ballmer (then CEO of Microsoft) just laughing at the iPhone price tag… it was something like 3-5 times most other phones at the time, and IIRC the first version there were no carrier rebate.

People just like to feel edgy with sharing their opinion I guess.

  • It was thought that the LLM wouldn’t keep the actual data internally verbatim. If you can memorize an article, and recite it to everyone free of charge, technically it’s plagiarism. Same if you sing a song to a crowd when you don’t have the rights.

The Google research (and other discovery) proved that you can actually extract verbatim training data from a LLM. Which has a lot of implications for copyright.

  • Also the GOP came out to say her candidacy was “toast” and I feel like I’m taking crazy pills. Their top guy right now literally used the words state rights and said that it wasn’t about slavery. Why is Haley toast?

Am I the only one who noticed that level of hypocrisy?

  • That’s the thing. Picard has a trauma. She lost her identity, childhood, sense of belonging. It’s entirely different.

Like Bane said, “you merely adopted the borg. I was born in it, molded by it. I didn’t anything of humanity until I was already a (wo)man.”

Edit: Also, isn’t it addressed at some point that, for 7o9, her trauma was actually to leave the borg and not being in it?

  • Even more so when some of my friends are already using AI to fake some of their shares. Good thing I have good friends who clearly didn’t spend their last vacation having dumplings with Jinping or Poutine with Putin. But there is a blurred line there where I’m not sure my colleague who didn’t take a vacation in the last six months at work went cave diving. I’m waiting for those reports, Brian!!

  • As far as I know no email services (at least the big ones) do that. They will mark some domains as spam by default but if you allow them (e.g. adding the email to your contacts) you will get them in your inbox, penis pills and all.

I’d rather be able to do that for Mastodon (allow me to follow some people but mark the rest as whatever-the-equivalent-of-spam is).

  • Spam filters isn’t the same as defederating. As far as I know outside of cert issues (like DKIM to prevent spoofing) nobody would prevent you from sending an email to any domain that uses SMTP. And if you allowlist emails from that domain you’ll receive it.

This is not the same as Gmail saying “we won’t allow emails to and from proton” or vice versa.

  • All of the protocols that have been ratified are federated. That was kind of the big thing of the internet. HTTP, SMTP (email), FTP, etc. All federated.

When people talk about defederating threads, I’m always curious why they think Net Neutrality is a bad idea, or if they’d appreciate if their email providers didn’t allow emails to Gmail because they don’t like big corporations…

  • That’s a similar argument as “but ALL lives matter”. Nobody is saying black/queer/women history is separate from history. The month is there to highlight parts of history that would be forgotten otherwise, or that people feel convenient to ignore. We need to celebrate our differences, and adding a day/week/month to the calendar does it.
