Texans, what's the attitude/feelings/preparations towards the coming freezing weather?

If they bring a generator to the water pump near my house I'm shutting off my water and heading to my sister's house.
In 2021, the morning of the big freeze they parked a big diesel generator at the water pump. They told us there would be rolling blackouts, but we ended up losing power for 4 days. After it got down to 40° in my house, I drove halfway across the metroplex in snow and ice, with my kids, to my sister's house because she had power.
Her house is on the same grid as a hospital, she never lost power. Not even a blip. Mine is just a suburban neighborhood. I'm convinced they knew they were going to kill our power for an extended time, so they brought out the generator for their water pump. But they didn't tell us, so we were unable to properly prepare. So not only did a lot of people have damage that could have been prevented, but my kids now get scared every time it gets cold thinking we'll be in the same situation again.
I live in North Texas. We get everything other than volcanoes. We have tornados, earthquakes, and hurricanes can even make it this far in land from the Gulf of Mexico. Plus excessive heat-waves and since 2020 artic blasts. Plus if we're not experiencing a drought there will be flash floods.
Basically, thanks to 25 years of Republican control the state is not prepared for jack shit. My current disaster prep is limited to savings as much money as I can, so I can move out of this state this summer.
My sister-in-law thought the chorus of Metallica's Battery was "backdoor raid". Now I can't unhear it.
I also thought in Live and Let Die Paul sang, "give an Alabama yell" instead of "give the other feller hell."
The Evercade look really cool, and his birthday is coming up, so it is tempting. Does it allow you to add custom roms or create your own carts?
I'm all for letting him tinker. With Retro Arc I was able to export the configuration and import it back in when had messed it up. However, it has other issues many around the controller, that would cause issues on reimport. He would get too frustrated with it. I'll definitely check out Open Emu and see if that has a better experience. Thanks!
I'm the opposite right now. Grew up on TNG, just finished SNW and Lower Decks and now I'm watching DS9 for the first time.
Mike Ness of Social Distortion said to expect their next album in 1-2 years, in January 2011. 13 years later I'm still waiting.
I've played around with a few of them. I've found LM Studio the most robust and user friendly.
I grew up in Texas and moved to England. I remember my first weekend there looking at a map thinking of going to visit Cambridge. It was a couple of inches away on the map and I thought, should be an hour maybe an hour and half drive. Imagine my surprise when I arrived in Cambridge in 20 minutes. I forgot to take into consideration scale.
Yes it was a paper map, I know I'm old.
From my experience people like the ones you described are horrible unhappy people. Instead of trying to make the world a better place they want to make everyone else as miserable as they are. The best thing you can do is not let them drag you down. When I have a memory of someone being horrible to me, I think back to how miserable of a person they are and immediately feel better about my own life.
Multiple screen RDP support. It is the only thing keeping me on Windows for my personal desktop. I RDP into my work laptop from my desktop so I can have all 4 of my monitors, but keep my systems separate.
I'm watching DS9 for the first time, just watched this one last night. I thought for sure they would end up getting taken. I love how it turned out.
I'm an American who lived in England for a couple of years. Due to American media the majority of everyone understood what I meant when I said things like soccer, trunk or hood of a car, fries, etc. Words with different meanings between the two could get confusing like biscuit, chips, or pissed.
Since soccer doesn't have another meaning I never ran into someone who didn't know what I was talking about. However, when saying football in an American accent some thought I was referring to American Football by default.
I can only remember one instant where someone did not know what I was talking about. That was when I asked someone at work where the dumpster was and I got a blank stare. I explained, the big metal thing outside for trash and they were like, "oh the skip"
Unless you are in retail, this is the worst time of year for find work. Just wait until everyone gets back in the office after the new year and you should see a lot more opportunities and responses. Just hold on man.
I feel you on hating the holidays. I get so little time off of work that I just want to relax, but the expectations of the holidays make it near impossible. I have 4 siblings and they all have 2-3 kids and them and my mom always try to plan something for Christmas. The problem is we all live at least 4 hours away from each other. It is a logistical nightmare. This year I finally put my foot down and told my family I'm not doing that this year. I also told them not to get anything for my kids because honestly getting presents for 11 nieces and nephews is getting ridiculous. I even told my mom not to come visit because I just can't deal with her histrionic personality disorder right now. Of course, I couldn't put it that way, but to my surprise she actually listened for once.
I do still have to deal with my wife's family coming over, because apparently me saying I don't want to do anything for Christmas means I'm find with doing Christmas stuff on December 23rd. However, beside my wife stressing about making our house completely spotless, her family coming over isn't that bad. They will come over for like half a day and go home, and there is never any drama.
Stay strong, the 26th is only a few days away.
This sounds like my level of luck. I only get a couple of hours a week at most to do what I want and nine times out of ten it gets interrupted by something breaking. I actually ran into a very similar issue last weekend when I repurposed an old build to monitor some cameras I installed. I had just reinstalled the OS, installed Shinobi and was getting everything configured when it crashed and would not boot back up. When trying to boot I saw the mem light turn on. Luckily in my case, it was resolved after I reseated each stick. But it was still a huge pain in the ass because the CPU heat sink blocks some of the DIM slots. Hopefully, it is not anything major and you can get back up and running.
As long as there has been popular music, there have been people who say it is evil. Many classical composer where consider controversial. Mozart’s Leck mich im Arsch (Lick me in the arse) aside, anyone who challenged the status quo was considered “evil” but many.
In rock and rolls case, I would say no it is not inherently racist, and it has nothing to do with drums. But I can see how you could draw that conclusion because pre-Elvis rock and roll was considered “race music”. However, that fact that record companies found success with white washed versions of it, would indicate to me that they didn’t consider rock and roll itself evil. Of course, there were always those who hated it no matter how watered down Pat Boone tried to make it and considered it evil. But that’s no different than really anything that goes against the status quo.
As the 60s rolled on, there were minor conflict between rock and roll and the church. Most famously, John Lennon saying the Beatles were more popular than Jesus. In the late 60s bands like Black Sabbath were seen as evil, but I don’t think that applied to rock and roll as a whole. However, into the 70s with bands like Alice Cooper, New York Dolls, Kiss, and then the emergence of punk, more people started thinking of rock and roll in general as evil.
Then comes the 1980s. The Reagan years. Where you have the rise of the Moral Majority, the Satanic Panic, and PMRC, which loved to label things as “evil”. Make things us versus them. I don’t think it had anything to do with the actual music. It was more of the anti-establishment messages and decadence that was associated with the rock and roll lifestyle. It didn’t help that many bands purposefully adopted satanic symbols for shock value.
But, in true 1980s fashion instead of talking to their kids, boomer parents just labeled it as evil and forbid it.
I did buy a house in 2008. January of 2008. Two months before the market crashed. It took me years not to be upside down.
One of the funniest, my wife majored in British literature in college. She's read all major works, reads Shakespeare for fun, and can read and speaks middle English. I worked and traveled to England a few times a year and had lived there in my early 20s, before we met.
For our fifth anniversary I took her to England. It was her first time ever leaving the US. In fact the first time she left the southern US.
We're standing at the curb at Gatwick waiting for a cab and there are two guys behind us talking. My wife leans over and whispers, "what language are they speaking?"
I just started laughing, and explained they were speaking English, they are just Scottish. All that book learning and studying of the language couldn't prepare her for the Scottish accent.
Fuck ERCOT, Greg Abbott, and every single asshole who keeps voting him and all the Republicans back into office.
