  • I wish that it wasn't dependent on household income or filing your tax return for the past year. Of course, dropping the means testing would also drop the tax filing requirement and probably save a ton of money on administration costs, but we can't have people claiming a benefit they "don't deserve," now can we? I fucking hate neoliberalism. I hope this program stays, but is modified so that everyone can use it.

  • Yeah, I'm aware of that. We need more study and research, like I said. I'm very pro-weed (I'm smoking right now lol), but we can't make reasonable conclusions about the level of risk involved in teen smoking yet. We just don't know the full extent of any negative effects on developing brains.

I think assessing risk based on consumption makes sense in terms of teens (and young adults too because their brains are still developing) being informed of the level of risk involved in how much they smoke, so that's why I advocated for that.

  • I'm wondering about dosage here, really. As a kid, I smoked weed like maybe once a week but I knew kids who were constantly high all day, every day. We called them "permafried" and some even self-identified that way as a matter of pride.

Hopefully, with further study and research, we can get more information about the actual risk to teens with a variety of usage patterns. Then it's a matter of education so that they're aware of the risk before they're presented with the choice to smoke.

  • If the punishment for deliberately claiming more in benefits than you’re entitled to is simply to repay the benefits then there’s no incentive to not do it.

Uh, what? The incentive is not having to pay anything back by claiming the correct amount. They're poor, that's why they've applied for the benefit in the first place. They can't afford to pay stuff back.

The reason this is punitive is literally because they've chosen the amount they're able to manage and yet are hit with huge fines when they've "gotten it wrong" by small margins, some as low as 38p like in the article.

  • "I thought it was a beautiful, fantastic country. But now I'm so disappointed. I'm literally crushed that we'll never be represented in this country and there's never a chance of changing the government," Speck said.

Maybe you could just campaign for electoral reform instead of separating? Since you're landlocked and all? These people are idiots.

  • Generally, I don't buy games over $18 CAD. I've made exceptions (Temtem, Civ 6, Super Mega Baseball 3, My Time at Portia, Satisfactory, a couple of others) but never paid more than $40 unless it's a gift for someone I really like (I pre-ordered Fallout 4 for my ex for her birthday).

I will happily wait years for something to come down in price. I have 600+ games on Steam: I always have other options.

  • Sure, and we have lots of immigrants already, including from the US. We take in around 300,000-500,000 immigrants every year. Why should Canada specifically do (and spend) more so that we can get more Americans to come here? I know Americans want that, but why should we do it? I don't see a benefit.

We're even passing legislation lately that makes it so that we take in fewer people. Why would we change that for Americans?

  • I'm aware of the history feature. It doesn't do what you seem to think it does (keep a tab in suspension in an easily accessible location over multiple hours or days of browsing).

Now, the OneTab extension? That's actually suitable for this purpose. History doesn't do what it does.

  • I agree that ignoring 4.6% of the provincial population is misguided. I'm certainly not advocating for it, but that's the reality.

In the context of Bill 21, what does it mean to take a bill seriously when it doesn't affect you? As far as I'm concerned, the Liberals would never implement something like that nationwide even if they were forced to more significantly rely on BQ for support.

  • Considering that Muslims and anglos are minorities in Quebec, I doubt the Liberals or BQ care about that as long as they can get their flagship bills voted through. Like I get where you're coming from, I just don't think they give a shit.

  • Carney could literally ignore the NDP for the next 4 years and I doubt it would make any difference. I say this as an NDP voter.

BQ has over 3 times the seats, it makes way more sense to try to work with them because you only need to convince 4/22 of them instead of 4/7 (and the things that BQ asks for in return may be a lot more politically achievable than whatever the NDP asks for, because they like to go big).

Carney may also want to cosy up to Quebec voters who were not entirely impressed with his French and don't trust him. Having a good relationship with BQ may go a long way for these people.

I don't love it, but the NDP don't have leverage here.

  • On Friday, the Conservative Party announced Conservative MP-elect Damien Kurek will resign to allow Poilievre to run in an upcoming byelection.

Kurek was first elected in the Alberta riding of Battle River—Crowfoot in 2019.

The Conservatives handily won that riding on Monday with nearly 82 per cent of the vote.

Of course it's Alberta and solidly blue.

  • About time. You have to wonder whether that'll stop any of the others, though. They were creating fucking tutorials for this shit and spreading it. A lot of these people torturing kids were other kids. Really horrible stuff.

I hope the victims are or will be okay.

  • From a data analysis perspective, it doesn't really make sense not to ask for it if it's going to be affecting every aspect of a person's life. Knowing the implications of belonging to a particular caste in terms of life circumstances and statistical outcomes could be valuable.

That said, I don't trust a dictatorship to collect, analyze, and draw conclusions from demographic information fairly or responsibly.

  • I'm currently playing Research Story, that one is pretty cute. There are romances. I don't know about combat since I haven't gotten that far (just a few hours of play); it doesn't really seem like there will be combat, but there could be.

I'd also recommend Apico, Mudborne, Littlewood, or Fields of Mistria. I'm sure I'm missing a ton. I think Steam has "Cute," "Romance," and "Slice of Life" tags if you wanted to browse those on the storefront.
