  • I'm 50/50 on this. On one hand, food deserts exist, and there are a lot of people who are struggling. OTOH, your comment makes it sound like you have a sharp cliff between "has 6 houses and personal chef + personal trainer on staff" and "can't afford to eat 3 times every day".

I could easily see either "reserved for billionaires and their playthings" or "available if your insurance covers it" with all the weird exceptions and "benefits cliffs" we've seen for the past 20+ years of insurance in the US.

That ignores other countries, but I don't know enough to speculate on how e.g. Norway would handle a longevity vaccine.

  • Diet and exercise won't make this article obsolete. Those things will help avoid an early demise to things like heart disease or stroke, but the don't dramatically uncap the lifespan.

  • I love everything about this thread

  • Would you believe that the spelling was deliberate? Strong bear arms! Rawr!

  • 😂

  • Hurts a little that 4k users is "sizeable", but I guess we have to start somewhere.

  • Okay, Columbo, you got me. I never use a knife on raisin bags; I prefer to rip 'em open with my bear arms.

  • Yes and no. They're not as easy to steal, but they're more likely to be targeted by the car thief not realizing that it's the "wrong" model year.

  • Neither. I never order a tuna sandwich. I sometimes make myself a tuna sandwich. 😂

  • You need to use a sharp knife, not a butterknife.

  • FFS means "Facial feminization surgery" in this context, correct? I automatically read it as "For f#$%'s sake" and paused, thinking "No, that can't be right."

  • saving SMS credit for a decade

At least two decades! I'd say this trend goes back to the late 90s -- think chatspeak on AOL chatrooms, ICQ, etc. I didn't get my first mobile 'til '02, but SMS was invented in '92. People were probably doing this as soon as SMS was available on their phones.

  • Soon-to-not-be-vacant?

(subject to construction delays, that is!)

  • Checking account? No change -- I have more in savings (emergency fund)

All accounts, including mortgage? ouch. I'd still be above zero, but I wouldn't like the new, bigger house payment.

  • How did you buy the basement suite? Or did you rent it? Almost nobody graduates high school with enough cash to buy a house, so...

    far too many bad decisions

Hard disagree. I work as a programmer which pays well enough to be comfortable. The work doesn't suit everyone, and even if it did, we need people doing other things than programming for the world to work! That includes fast food, retail, etc. The cliche is teenagers and college kids, but in fact over half of people making minimum wage are older.

That includes a lot of single parents -- spouse left, now they have to scramble for income even before child support kicks in. They're not all just jackasses you can dismiss with "bah, they made their bed".

My problem with your advice to "just buy a house" is that it's not actionable for at least half the population.

  • Where did you live before you bought your house?

Is that approach available to 40-something single parents working at McDonald's?
