  • What a mixup to make! 😂

But yeah, I see what you're getting at

  • people want to work for them.

I wonder what the breakdown is between:

    • I want to work there because it's the most meaningful work available to me
    • ...because I need health insurance that's not a sick joke
    • ...because even though the work sucks and the pay is low, it actually has a pension

IMO "want to work for them" conceals a LOT of people who'd rather do something else but feel like they're wearing golden handcuffs of some sort.

  • Are you interested in setec astronomy?

  • I bring a couple of pillows from home whenever I can. Doesn't work for flights, of course, but on shorter trips it's a godsend.

  • pointless virtue signaling

What do we want? An end to blatant racist murders by police!

What do we get? Rename our git branches!

  • It seems like past mugshots would be an ideal part of the training set. Are they not using those?

Personally, I'm leaning towards "It's not the image recognition program that's the problem here."

  • Where in the southwest? I looked at Phoenix for a quick comparison -- highs from 108F to 111F for the past week...but lows ranged from 82F to 93F.

What actually comes to mind is Pueblo houses. Isn't this passive house just an expansion on that concept?

  • When cats are involved?

    Always.

  • Oh, I don't know, with 8 arms a squid cook could be VERY effective!

Just don't ask one to mix the salad...

  • Audacious.

Miles, the main character, has tremendous audacity, and I found it hilarious!

Huh, now I'm going to have to start re-reading the series :)

  • Either Barrayar (it directly continues the story from Shards) or Warrior's Apprentice (published the same year as Shards, different story arc but relevant characters).

  • Which book are you starting with? You'll get a very different vibe depending on whether you're starting with Dreamweaver's Dilemma, Shards of Honor, or The Warrior's Apprentice.

It's a long series with a super wide range. If you like Warrior's Apprentice, you'll probably like most of the series.

  • I just finished The Psychology Of Time Travel, too! Fantastic read. I especially appreciated the consideration given to how a time traveling organization would function as an agency. That's rare.

  • Strange, I read The Player of Games relatively recently, and I didn't care for it all that much. I just really couldn't root for Gurgeh. That kind of wrecked it for me.

I sort of lost interest in the series because of it. Does the next book in the series have a more sympathetic protagonist?

  • You'll be waiting a long time for that one, I'm afraid. I've pretty much given up on that series ever being finished.

  • I'd recommend The Killing Star by Charles R. Pellegrino. It plays with some of the same ideas in a rather different way.

  • It's a great book. The sequels are also excellent. You're in for a treat :D

  • My grandma used to call her town a "bedroom" community. 600ish people lived in town with most commuting for work. IIRC, there are a couple of nearby towns with around 3k people, the biggest city in the county having 12k people. One of the state's major cities is around an hour away; think 100kish people.

I used to think that would be too far to commute, but from other comments on this post, it sounds common.
