  • You've heard of sleepwalking. Why not sleepreading?

  • For me, keeping my glasses on my bedside table while I'm sleeping works well.

  • I get it. Do all that work, and at the end, it's still not working? Ugh, that's the worst :( I always feel super defeated in that sort of circumstance.

OTOH...I have to echo the others giving you a virtual pat on the back. You were super stretching your DIY skills! Kudos for going for it! That's not an easy thing to do, and it sounds like you got through 99% of the job. That's def something where you can be proud of yourself.

  • I don't know about endless. !technology only has about a dozen different users represented on the first page of posts. I don't think Lemmy has the critical mass of users to flood the "block a few manually" response.

I do like the idea of combining reposts between communities, though. Get just one discussion going! Someone posted something interesting about books the other day. I replied, but there was no other activity.

Turned out that all the discussion was happening in the OTHER community, the one I hadn't seen :(

Although...different communities have different moderation standards. A combined discussion like this would be a headache for the mods.

  • Don't be so proud of that technological terror. The ability to destroy your face is insignificant next to the power of the Force.

  • Hmm, that could be a hook. Join the army and get the shot, or live a "safer" life with the natural span.

Still, I'm not sure that conscription policies make for stronger armies. I'd need to see receipts on that one.

  • I'm not sure about your premise. Will a longevity vaccine ensure a healthy population? Will it ensure a large pool of army recruits?

I'd almost expect the opposite, with a lower birthrate and a smaller proportion of the population being kids. Are you going to rush to have kids if you expect to live forever? Are you going to volunteer for the army as readily if the only causes of death are 1. combat deaths and 2. car accidents?

  • Thanks, that means a lot, coming from the Poisoner of Doma!

  • People talk about the peace and quiet, but...

My grandparents used to live out in the country. Simple little house on a lake. When I'd visit, it wasn't actually quiet -- I'd always hear at least one neighbor across the lake mowing lawn, running a weed whipper, etc.

Maybe you'd get some true quiet in a more isolated part of the country? I'm not sure anymore. Motor sound carries.

  • This hits home. 10 years ago, Netflix was great! It had this huge catalog, so you could easily find something to watch.

Then, bit by bit, they started losing shows. I'd start hearing from friends "Hey, you should check xyz out" -- not available for streaming.

By time I dropped my subscription in 2019, there wasn't much I was still interested in. I think the last show I had watched was The Crown, and there was a long delay between seasons on that one, IIRC.

  • Traffic has a lot to do with living in the city. I'm about 6 miles away from major destinations downtown. I mostly work remote, but when I go into the office, it's about 7 miles away in one of the suburbs.

"What about the bus?" you might ask. Well, around here that's kind of a sick joke. It works OK for commuting -- but it turns my 15 minute drive into an hour on the bus with at least one transfer. And what if I'm trying to go to a party that a friend is hosting in the suburbs? In many cases, I'd have to arrange to stay overnight because bus service to that area just stops until morning.

  • Do you think you're the only American in this thread?

  • Extreme solution: Just start blocking everyone who posts a Trump post.

  • So you say, but it doesn't make the shit sandwich taste any better.

  • Not really. You pretty much dodged the question.

If I say I'm monogamous, when do you start calling me a liar?

When you say "so and so is hot!" and I don't argue?

When I say "so and so is hot!"?

When I bang so and so without breaking up with my current partner?

I've read this entire thread, and I'm still not entirely sure where you'd draw that line.

  • cathartic

Understandable, but personally, I really hate it.

What I really looked forward to after Trump's pathetic election loss in 2020 was being able to look at reddit without 2/3 of the posts being Trump this, Trump that, trump trump trump.

I was super disappointed. While the page wasn't all-trump-all-the-time anymore, I'd still see 1-2 Trump posts per page. That continues to this day on Lemmy :(

I want to read about good and interesting things here, not just be part of feeding a monster's ego.

  • I'm 50/50 on this. On one hand, food deserts exist, and there are a lot of people who are struggling. OTOH, your comment makes it sound like you have a sharp cliff between "has 6 houses and personal chef + personal trainer on staff" and "can't afford to eat 3 times every day".

I could easily see either "reserved for billionaires and their playthings" or "available if your insurance covers it" with all the weird exceptions and "benefits cliffs" we've seen for the past 20+ years of insurance in the US.

That ignores other countries, but I don't know enough to speculate on how e.g. Norway would handle a longevity vaccine.

  • Diet and exercise won't make this article obsolete. Those things will help avoid an early demise to things like heart disease or stroke, but the don't dramatically uncap the lifespan.

  • I love everything about this thread
