Unsealed FBI doc exposes terrifying depth of Russian disinfo scheme

Yes. That is how crimes work. The crime happens and then the FBI looks at you afterwards.
Are you... American? This crap is taught at grade school level.
Clearly not, or Russians wouldn’t be able to slide cash into the pockets of social media influencers so easily.
They didn't. They got caught by the FBI and now we have massive news articles proving Russian influence. They literally just got caught, despite their best efforts at hiding.
Now comes the hard work at figuring out which of these 2800 influencers are fucking traitors... and which ones were just caught up in the mess. But someone in there had to have known that Russian money was part of this scheme.
I think this is a bit of a Tempest in a Teapot.
My conservative friends are into Daily Wire and more than willing to sacrifice Tucker Carlson politically speaking.
If you want to harm Republican causes, you need to go for bigger fish than Tucker Carlson. He's really lose influence over the last couple of years.
Wake me up if we're back to talking Fox News, Daily Wire, NY Post, Drudge Report, Reason.com. you know, websites or media that actually have power in the right wing?
Hmmmm. We brain drain the smart people out of Russia and into USA. While they stupid-drain our dumbasses into Russia.
I see this as a win win. Let them go there
Yes but... Fediverse has more moderators and even server level bans where we can fight back.
It's a different political makeup here on the Fediverse. It's not like the Russians can hand money to just one or two CEOs and suddenly all of the moderators we trust here turn to the other side.
We need to keep our wits about us here. We came to Lemmy (and Fediverse) because centralized commercial control of our discussion spaces led to perverse incentives.
I only consider this political situation to be yet another test of the Fediverse. We have to survive it. But I also believe we moved to the Fediverse because we all believe we can do more about disinformation or malicious actors here on the Fediverse than on... Reddit or Facebook.
I understand the right wingers. I don't like it but I at least understand it.
What I don't understand are the far-left who willingly follows in far-left Russian propaganda.
Remember folks: Russia in 2016 pushed both Black Lives Matter AND Blue Lives Matter. Russia played both sides because they want chaos amongst us. They will coopt and corrupt American calls.
The leftist pro-Palestine stuff (especially to the point where you're supposed to vote for Jill Stein) is one obvious example to me. Iran and Russia are aligned on this issue. Ukraine and Israel are also aligned in our global posture.
I understand the need to protect Gaza civilians too and I think that Israeli administration are full of cowboys whose anti regulation stance is leading to atrocities. But we can't just absorb far-left Iranian or Russian propaganda on that matter.
I 100% expect Russia and Iran to continue to use Gaza as a wedge issue to hurt the left. The left is supposed to be smart enough to see the disinfo tactics turning us away from the Ukrainians but suddenly go blind on the other geopolitical matter.
It's just like the Black Lives Matter Russian disinfo campaign. They are very good at corrupting our ideals into us hating our allies and hating ourselves.
Probably because the Russians kicked up their campaign this year as the battle of Donesk went poorly for them.
Russia realizes that the #1 factor in their war for the Ukrainian East depends on getting Trump elected and the Republicans cutting aid.
The only reason Russia got Adviika was because Republicans cut aid between Nov 2023 and all of winter 2024. Shell hunger they called it, as the Ukrainians ran out of ammo and were forced to retreat from their fortress city.
Russia wants that to happen again. So they're kicking up their influence campaigns.
Russia is quite sanctioned, and the remaining US Business interest in Russia was looted / stolen by the Russians.
The business connection between USA and Russia is basically gone. Most (IE Elon Musk) are now making huge moves towards China now.
What remains are RT and other Russian disinfo groups
Saudis aren't trying to get Trump elected and directly meddle in the election.
And sure, the Saudis whitewash themselves and try to make us forget about Jamal. But Russia influence is really bad.
I'm not necessarily against foreign influence. Ukrainians have a right to make their case to us for example. But the Russian style disinfo is leading to conspiracy theories and a degeneration of our society.
That's just called 1600s era half plate.
As halberds and other armor penetrating weapons became normal (and Guns), the focus of armorers was on deflection rather than outright stopping blows.
Also, iron became cheaper and thus mass produced. So in some sense armor got worse, but far more people were wearing armor. The small bits (gloves, legs, etc etc) couldn't be custom made per person anymore because of mass production templates. But armor was well on its way out by then anyway as guns were obviously the future.
True. But it keeps happening.
Be it two thousand years ago or 500 years ago. Sexy armor proves that humans haven't really changed.
Kings and generals don't really find themselves alone on the front lines. The armor is nearly ceremonial, no one is supposed to take a shot at the king. Even if the king were expected to visit the front lines.
As such, kings, princes and other nobles never had practical armor. It's all armor-fashion and status symbols (including sexualization, when said sexualization was in fashion).
I raise you Emperor Ferdinand I Armor, specifically it's Codpiece.
I'm just saying. Sexualized armor is very historical.
If Trump gets the Presidency, you still can affect national level politics by voting in your Representative and Senator.
If Democrats hold Senate and House, they can protect us more from Trump. Every state matters, because every state has 2 Senators at a minimum (and Senators are very, very powerful). Senators are state-wide and therefore immune to any gerrymandering (only House Members have the Gerrymandering problem)
Oh I get it.
They're all cousins. /Trolololol
Remember Sailor Moon Dub anyone?
- Anti-federalism -- Deep rooted distrust of the Federal Government has been around since the dawn of the USA, though its often been part of the minority.
- Know Nothing / Native American Party -- 1850s era movement. Protectionist, isolationist, nativist. Originally they popped up as anti-Irish and anti-Catholic, but overall the concept is that immigrants suck. The modern concept is: "I know nothing", about the movement. The overall idea is that even in the 1800s, it was bad to look like a racist bigot, so you'd keep your support for these causes secret. Everyone in the party knows that "the Know Nothings are larger than everyone expects", but no one really knows how big the movement is. And that's the point.
- America First -- 1930s saw the rise of Fascism vs Communism in Europe with the dawn of the Spanish civil war. The "America First" movement focused on isolationism and even pro-German / Nazi slant mixed with religious fervor. This was pushed by tech-gurus of the time: Charles Lindberg (airplane entrepreneur, first Trans-atlantic flight, etc. etc.), and the Christian Front. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1939_Nazi_rally_at_Madison_Square_Garden).
- NAFTA -- 1990s free-trade by Bill Clinton opened up Mexico and Canada as incredible trading partners. However, local industry / local steel lost out as companies started to shop in Mexico for material. As Bill Clinton was a huge pusher of NAFTA, the anti-NAFTA political group consolidated under Republicans. This is likely where the bulk of blue-collar workers is coming from, especially because Trump started adding Tariffs / anti-globalism concepts back to the forefront of American Politics.
Some more recent context:
- Trump has been building his brand for decades as a very rich, very macho straight-talker. Even in the 80s and earlier, there's a large number of Hotels, Casinos, Resorts, Golf Courses (etc. etc.) that have relatively high reputation among Americans in general with Trump's name.
- Trump reads from the teleprompter in "another voice", openly showing his disdain for public speaking and the political system. Anyone who has lost faith in the political system loves this. Trump pretends that the teleprompter is forcing him to talk and its all just a "through the motions" thing. Then Trump obviously goes off teleprompter and talks about different concepts, the "real stuff". (Or so goes his branding). This simple trick is enough to get the gist to his followers: don't listen to what I say (because I'm being forced to say this politically correct crap). This means that Trump's true actions are only limited to the imagination of the listener.
- Trump is playing and leaning into the borne again Christian role. From a religious perspective, the "former enemy / former outsider" coming into religion is a common story and religious love it. Trump was openly a Democrat in the 90s / 00s before switching into Republicanism.
The "bulk" of Trump's political style is Know Nothing + Macho + anti-political correctness.
That's the fucking point.
"Politics" are just shit you say from a Teleprompter. Trump is "honestly" pointing out to his audience that most of what he says is just political bullshit, and that's why he's got a huge following.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. We have an entire generation of problems as the pro-Trump crowd is so anti-government and anti-politics that they vote for Trump. When Trump dies, this generation of voters will remain. Keep the eye on the prize and the long term problem, we need to not only win in 2024 but also 2026, 2028, etc. etc. until this movement dissipates (or if it never dissipates, then we need to win forever more).
Nazis lived on until they died, believing that the Holocaust was a myth.
That's why we built the Holocaust museum and other WW2 museums. To make sure that as the Nazis died off decades or a century later, that our message would outlast them.
There's no "deprogramming" here. This is going to be a lifelong obligation for us to fight against bad ideas.
Nothing is guaranteed before the election.
And since Jan6th is how Trump left the last election, nothing is guaranteed even if the election wins. But an election victory in massive numbers would be our best bet moving forward. It cannot be close, Trump must be soundly defeated for the country to move forward effectively.
First hit on Google was this list made by some Redditor: https://www.reddit.com/r/Betamax/comments/z8cun4/films_that_only_exist_on_betamax_or_alt_editions/
In any case: the big advantage of Betamax (and VHS) was how easy it was to get home-recordings done. An entire generation of family photos / family events (birthday parties, etc. etc.) are on Betamax and likely lost.
Banks are required to have KYC (know your customer) rules and report things to the FBI. Which the FBI received the reports and have caught the criminals.
I'm convinced you aren't American at this point and don't have any understanding of how crime or police work around here.
