  • You people put in a lot of effort. My lazy meal is a can of chicken (the kind you don't have to use a can opener on) and as many raw vegetables and nuts as it takes.

If I want to put in some effort, pre cooked rice pouch, can of chicken, a can of vegetables, and a can of tomatoes. Anything more than that definitely isn't lazy.

  • Be ready with your camera in case she takes her first unassisted steps then. You may get lucky and be the one who's there for it.

Also, you might want to bring ear plugs. My kid (same age) has had a rough day with teething and gas and the screaming gets a bit much. You have to watch them way more closely with earplugs in, but it might just save your sanity.

If you hope they won't do something (immediately crawl off, grab something specific, sneeze a mouthful of food in your face, reach their hand into the poop you're cleaning off them) they're totally gonna do it. As soon as it's physically possible.

Basically as long as you keep her from getting hurt or mentally scarred you're doing great, and as long as you pay attention you can manage that.

It's going to mean a lot to them to have a few hours together without a baby around. Try to enjoy it. They grow so quickly, by the time you get a chance to do it again it'll be completely different.

  • I feel like people who don't like the show totally miss what's going on with it. It's not realistic. It's a bunch of people in alien makeup on a completely impractical space station. Some of the acting is corny. Some of the plots are corny. Some of the dialog would be better in the moment if random fans had edited it. But it's the overall impact that counts.

It's the visceral reaction to londo and g'Kar, and the way it keeps changing and rearranging. It's how I still get fucked up thinking about Marcus, or the gropos or brother edward. It's how i've watched the show time after time but i've only been able to watch sleeping in the light twice because it's just too much. Would that scene with John and delenn be so gut wrenchingly painful without the corny acting, and all the heavy handed b plots, and dopey 1990's future tech that pounds into your head that they're people just like we are? I don't think it would.

  • You're supposed to see it coming from a mile away. And when it gets there, the character moments hit you with a depth of feeling you're totally not ready for.

The boxy CRTs and all that, aside from being a byproduct of a lower budget, are supposed to make the setting feel closer to our reality. These aren't people who have transcended their societal problems. But once they do, they're not just the people from star trek. They're something else entirely. The whole point of the show is that sometimes we're horrible, and we can be so much more than we could possibly imagine. And the same people can be both those things at the same time. It comes down to your own definition of who you are, and what you want.

  • I'm in much the same situation. I bought myself a pocket eBook, and I read so much more, because it's so small and light I can always have it on me. I have a moaan inkpalm I got from aliexpress, but there are a couple more polished ones out now that would probably be worth the extra money.

  • A lot of people will tell you the first season isn't worth watching. I'll admit that the acting is a little cheesier, and there are some episodes that you might think are a little heavy handed... but they set the stage for you to feel what you feel when the things they were exploring in the b plots come back in the main arc of the show. There will absolutely be moments 3 and 4 seasons in where you go 'oh shit, they set this up in the second episode!' Because it was heavy handed enough that you will remember it, even thoughbyou didn't get it at the time.

To an extent, you do have to get over the cheesy acting. I see it more like a play than a show with overly realistic acting. Some of the acting is a tool to get things across. And you know what? I don't know how well Londo and G'kar would play out without that cheesy background. There hasn't ever been better character development than those 2.

  • PDFs might be your sticking point. I've not found any software that will handle all the different things you can do with acrobat in an easy way. But I have to heavily modify PDFs from time to time, and you may not have nearly the needs I do.

I'd suggest checking out libre office, and see if you can find a PDF application that satisfies you. The app store on pop os is really good, as is the interface, and if you don't like tiling window managers, you can turn it off.

Another suggestion is to recognize you're a novice. If you read something that sounds like a perfect setup, but it's a little complicated, put it off. You don't want to get in over your head, because linux distros will not keep you from breaking things. The defaults of any large distribution are a pretty safe bet.

  • Have you ever held a Bat'leth? Because it makes you feel powerful. Klingons are interested in feeling powerful and striking fear in their enemies, and for that the Bat'leth is pretty freaking great.

I mean, we're human, so I get the whole Indiana Jones "Ima just shoot the guy" thing. But we're talking about Klingons. Even if the weapon is objectively bad, there is honor in killing an enemy the hard way.

  • You have a bad day or something? That's a whole torrent of nastiness, and it seems like you missed the context of my comment.

The judge is letting him behave horribly. That usually gets you at least a night in jail. That's the lack of consequences i'm talking about.

If you don't think that's a big deal, consider that trump only acts the way he does because a long succession of people who could have and should have put him in his place didn't do it.

  • That's possible. People literally get years added to their sentences for back talking judges. You are simply not allowed to derail a trial even a little bit, and the consequences for attempting it are swift and harsh. For anyone else.

I'm so tired of this fuckwit's behavior, but i'm even more angry that at every turn people have had the ability to stop that behavior and haven't. And now we're here. Anyone else would be immediately taken to jail for the stuff he's doing inside the courtroom and out and he's still not stopped.

It's a mockery, and if the courts can't handle this guy they have no business ruining people's lives for things that don't compare to anything trump has done.

  • Dunno about darn tough socks, but I have some smart wool socks i've been wearing for years and years. No idea what they go for now, because I bought mine over a decade ago, but whatever the cost they are absolutely worth it.

I also knit my own, and it's the only way i've gotten near the same quality and durability, and the cost for that is pretty high, even without considering the time it takes to knit them.

  • I've carried many different knives, and the one I stick with now is an opinel no 8. I find that I use it more than any other one, because it's particularly well suited to food. Perfect size to cut an Apple or avocado, even a steak, and the wood handle and general look make it pretty non threatening.

  • Yes. And the characters. They have depth, and it feels like you know them, which makes putting lgbtq and neurodivergent characters on the screen that much better. I understand their motivations, and i'm autistic so that's a real accomplishment.

I'm not caught up on all the shows, because i don't always have the energy for the active watching that something like Picard warrants, but they've managed to make even something as silly as lower decks have character development, depth, and add a completely different view of starfleet. Like, the whole chest alien conspiracy from TNG isn't so wild when you see that there's a wide range of people in starfleet that's not so obvious from following around their absolute best and brightest.
