A steady stream of people showing up daily with nothing, starting from scratch, is not a crisis to you?
Correct.
What do we do with those who show up to find all the farm jobs in Idaho and other places are filled?
Lol, you have no clue how farming works. But to be clear the US currently has historic low unemployment. Your remember that time when no employer is hiring at minimum wage? That's what historically low unemployment does.
There is plenty of work available.
Furthermore, do you condone the treatment refugees receive while working these jobs?
No, I don't. In fact, these "make the border strong" and "deport everyone" chants are used by employers of undocumented workers to get away with serious abuse. People that employee undocumented workers use the threat of deportation as a control method to stop their workers from demanding fair treatment.
The only form of border control I support is strict punishments and fines of employers of undocumented workers. That's the only way to improve working conditions and hopefully end up with reforms that make getting documentation not the nightmare process it is today.
But minimizing the long term need to assist the ongoing influx of people as purely racism isn’t productive. We have no solution for what to do with all of them.
It is racism because all this fear mongering is targeted at a single source of illegal immigration, the Mexican border. And it's targeted through evil and inhumane methods like putting razor wire in waterways. That's racism, it's not "solving problems" it's killing brown people.
We have other borders and mechanisms that people enter the US. This one is what racists cling to because nothing is more scary than a group of brown people on Fox News.
Do you think just opening up the border and letting whatever happens afterward work itself out is the answer?
Yes, because you may not know this, but that's exactly how the US operated for a century. It wasn't until the 90s that the border became this huge scary thing that racists clung to. Famously, Ronald Reagan granted citizenship to every Cuban who landed on US shores. That hasn't destroyed the nation, it was the backbone of major US cities like Miami.
And, again, I'll point to Europe which does effectively have open borders, particularly for EU citizens. This has not lead to the collapse of the EU. Though it did lead to brexit which has supremely hurt the UK.
We'll never stop undocumented workers, so how about we put into place mechanisms to. 1. Make getting documentation super easy, and 2. Provide these people with a leg up to actively contribute.
And if you say "we should do that for citizens" yes, we should. We can do two things.
The United States cannot continue to absorb the equivalent of Sweden every 4-5 years.
Citation needed. You believe 10 million people, cross the border illegally every 5 years? You believe 2 million people illegally cross the border per year?
Let me just say the bill is terrible, because it grants a wishlist of right-wing "solutions" turning the border into a militarized zone.
The "crisis" we have is turning away refugees because their skin is the wrong color.
One of my main Biden criticisms is he's been no different than Trump when it comes to the border. He's continued horrible Trump era policies that are responsible for both death and family separation.
Rather than staking a leftwing position, he's ceded all discussion about the border to the rightwing narratives. And I doubt a single person has been swayed by this.
We don't need to "protect" the border. Europe by and large did away with borders and it's been a huge stabilizing factor for them.
The whole "drug smuggling" shit is equally garbage. To the extent drugs cross the border, it's through legal ports of entry. And, it's entirely silly to build up the Mexican border when the Canadian border is basically wide open. Newsflash, drug smugglers know about Canada. Further, we have ports with giant shipping containers of goods that enter and leave the US every day. Do these rightwing idiots really believe drug smugglers wouldn't simply hide drugs in a giant container of soybeans or other food item?
There's a million ways to get drugs into the country, the one way they are the least likely to come in is via some undocumented worker looking to get a job working on a farm in Idaho.
Hmm, so anyone want to fork the project? I don't own their devices so have never signed their ToS. I'd love to see how they'd reason I'm breaking some law by hosting the code.
We could stop most undocumented migration tomorrow with 1 simple change, stiff penalties on companies that employ undocumented workers and have ICE investigate business owners for employing or contracting undocumented workers. You can literally visit almost any farm in the US and find 100s of undocumented workers being treated like shit.
But instead, republicans like to focus all their efforts on the boarder. Why? Because the threat of expulsion makes for good slave labor.
That's why they are constantly worried about undocumented immigrants using social services. The don't want their slaves educated or looked in on. They don't want CPS asking "Hey, isn't that child supposed to be in school? Why are they picking grapes right now?" So they constantly demonize and terrorize to make sure their slaves know "If you get too uppity, we'll separate your family and send them back to the cartels."
Not just any paperwork, and not to the court. Smith's team sent Trump's team discovery documents. They are literally crying because Smith's team is giving them requested documents even though they don't technically have to.
The media is starting to turn on Israel. It took them long enough and there's a lot of damage that's been done (like firing and sidelining all muslim commentators)
The lightest lightest pressure possible, basically a "maybe you guys should chill out a bit" has been said. Not cease fire, not "we'll withdraw aid" but rather "this seems a bit much".
Slowly, most media outlets are FINALLY getting to the point where "hey, maybe the fact that Israel just leveled 70% of Gaza, all the hospitals, and they've shut down aid, food, water, and power, while telling the residents to move up Egypt is a bad thing"
It's insane it's taken this long for Biden to put up even a modicum of pressure on Israel to slow down.
AAA says that EV batteries tend to lose power faster in cold weather, getting as little as 50-60% of their advertised range.
Right, and the EVs that lose that much range are the ones with the smallest battery packs. The heating requirement as a percentage of the battery pack goes down as the battery gets larger. It takes roughly the same amount of energy to keep a 40kWh battery warm as it does to keep a 150kWh battery warm.
The same logic doesn't directly translate for a car as a bus.
Buses will have fairly large batteries (Bird does 150kWh). The percentage of the battery needed for heat goes down as size goes up because the interior size is relatively negligible in how much added heating capacity is needed to keep the bus warm.
But yes, probably wouldn't be too crazy to throw on a propane heater in especially cold climates.
Friendly reminder to everyone to check your registration status, like right this instant. Because some of these states have REALLY bad registration laws to try and keep you from voting.
Just read the law. I'm not sure what it means for Sanders to invoke the act. The way I read it, it should have automatically applied. Congress would likely have to sue the Biden administration to force them to comply.
That said there's a get out of jail clause. Basically, Biden simply needs to write a letter with his excuse for ignoring war crimes. it'll go "something something Oct 7 gives Israel the right to genocide".
And that's it, aid flows freely after that.
Still, at least Bernie is raising this as an issue.
We aren't. The context was "he said he wouldn't accept the election results" not "why should nobody vote for a fascist".
He's easily the most corrupt president in US history. From start to finish it was just a long game of him trying to figure out how he could bilk more money out of his supporters, the united states, foreign powers, etc. And since his supporters are a bunch of racist nazis, he put corrupt racist nazis in charge of nearly every executive branch position.
Congress was going to create an agency with the teeth to enforce regulations. So Nixon made the EPA and made sure it couldn’t hold corporations accountable.
This is a bad take. There were already several federal agencies with some teeth, but their powers were hyper focused. The EPA was a consolidation of those agencies.
When the EPA was established and ratified by congress, it was super popular. It passed the house 401-21 and the senate 89-11. Being environmentally conscious was popular across the aisle. There were actually right wing eco terrorists if you can believe it (Ted Kaczynski). Under nixon, ford, and carter, the EPA saw massive expansions of power.
The reason the EPA became a bugbear of the right is Ronald Reagan. EPA was big government at it's finest and reagan hated that. Reagan was the super sellout to corporate America and Clinton wasn't a whole lot better with his "the era of big government is over".
Correct.
