  • Waaa? Didn't you read the supreme court's real official and super enforceable and cool ethics standards they published in response to Thomas's million dollar modest vacations?

I'm sure the upstanding justices will LEAP to follow their own guidelines. /s

  • Just a reminder, the satanic panic was triggered by a discredited psychological theory (recovered memories) posited by a psychiatrist that saw no problems marrying one of his patients.

Also fun fact, a lot of QAnon satanic panic garbage is a mixture of this and antisemitic tropes. Basically a bunch of idiots mad that society stopped caring about this in the 90s.

  • The Walmart self checkout layout is generally just bad. Because they are paranoid about theft, it's setup to make it easy for the worker monitoring to make sure nothing fishy is going on. However, that means that the customers that want to checkout often can't see what's open.

This creates lines as the machines aren't fully utilized.

But further, it's often the case that for whatever reason these machines need an employee to interact. With 10 machines running at full capacity, that means longer waits for everyone because 3 machines are waiting for an id badge scan.

Walmart can solve some of these problems with more employees but that cost money.

  • They aren't required to verify who signs up for the service, which is the crux of the problem. Records are useless if they can't be associated with an individual.

Forcing in person sign ups with strong identifying requirements solves the swatting problem, because every number is directly associated with who is using it.

  • To actually fix something like this, you'd need every phone number to be registered in person with a star card and to completely outlaw virtual numbers providers with stiff penalties. But even then, there's the issue of international numbers and illegally spoofing a number. Those can't be fixed without revamping the telcos which is really hard with the amount of ossified tech in place.

This is exactly what you ask for (I'm guessing you didn't read the full post).

  • Oh go on, come up with something instead of just downvoting me. I know it's hard, actual work even, but you're never gonna change minds otherwise.

Dude, I just responded to you and did not downvote, calm down. Maybe take some of your own advice about anger?

  • it's a minor inconvenience for the US Government

    Citation needed.

Even if I granted the US gov as being all seeing, a major problem is that it requires local PD/prosecutors to get the feds involved.

I'm not actually on board with attacking this via phone system regulations, but It is fairly easy to make anonymous phone calls using the techniques I pointed out. To actually fix something like this, you'd need every phone number to be registered in person with a star card and to completely outlaw virtual numbers providers with stiff penalties. But even then, there's the issue of international numbers and illegally spoofing a number. This probably won't happen in my lifetime, but the two things that need to happen are reducing gun ownership and demilitarization of the police. Cops are way too trigger happy, actual consequences when cops murder or harm individuals would go a long way in stopping them from perceiving everyone as an enemy combatant. Pulling guns off the streets would reduce the justifications of busting down doors with a dozen cops ready to shoot anything that moves.

  • Cool, so the city paid for 4 people to sit and watch a turnstile for who knows how long to prevent, what, $100, $1000 in lost revenue?

It costs them $50/hr per cop (roughly). Is the argument really that this squad is stopping more than 60 people every hour from skipping fares?

  • Good ole fascism.

This is a play to delegitimize the courts. Fascists know that Trump deserves to be knocked off the ballot and that Biden does not. They don't care. It serves them well to have their case laughed out of court so they can campaign off removing the deep state from the courts.

Man I wish there was a way to penetrate fascist propaganda.

  • This actually changes a lot. If house republicans put up particularly MAGAy bills, their fellow members in tight districts can't safely either not vote or vote against those bills. Otherwise, their vote will be used against them in campaign ads that very well may end their career. Voting for the bill will upset their moderate voters, voting against will upset the MAGA voters and the rest of the caucus.

Traditionally, for more controversial bills, Rs in moderate districts would abstain to stay off the radar.

So, to keep the caucus the safest move for the Rs is to not bring up anything (which, notable with the slim majority they have now, they've already slowed bills rolling out). But then Ds can very easily still campaign against the Rs in purple districts for being do-nothing politicians.

  • No matter what happens Trump will trumpet "the deep state is rigging things against me".

To me, it's a nothing that he does this. His followers already believe this regardless of what happens. Everyone else knows what happened J6.

So what is there to fear following the law? His supporters won't get less violent or treasonous.
