  • One of the Wright brothers managed to live to see the end of WWII. Imagine the weird janky flying machine you and your dead brother designed in a bicycle shop in Dayton is being used to decimate Europe while boats full of the things are redefining naval warfare across the whole of the pacific before one drops a weapon so powerful that it becomes the basis of mutually assured destruction

  • Yeah I prefer to think of it as that the most violent enforcers of homophobia are often queer. Gay people operate the conversion camps, straight people send their kids to them at the behest of a straight preacher. The straight people in this scenario have other things on their mind, homophobia isn't their primary concern, but it is one of their concerns.

  • I think for that last paragraph it's a thing where sex and processing emotions are equally taboo to a lot of men who are as fucked up as you described. Except sex and even utilizing a sex worker's services fit within a script they have the mental space to comprehend. You sneak off, have sex, pay, shut up about it. Whereas asking a friend if they can help you process some stuff over a beer or going to therapy are public in the sense that they aren't hidden. They're awkward, they involve potential accountability and may demand change. They're hard and seeing a sex worker in such a way is cathartic and exciting in all the ways that telling a friend you're worried you aren't masculine enough isn't.

But also yeah, sexuality does also seem to just be where misc mental issues wind up dumped. I'm certainly not one to judge about any of that shit. I just suspect some people only go to sex to deal with it instead of also working to become mentally healthy. Like you can still be freaky once you are, in fact you often get better at it.

  • So when racists use it its with their signature attention to the social construction of race and nuance that we've all come to expect. I.e. they're mad at someone they think is a bit dark and they call them a slur about it.

  • Scientists will go away. Some may come back. We'll eventually get new ones. But many will decide they quite like the life they build in Europe. This will have long term consequences

Also early science was easier because the easy and cheap to discover stuff wasn't yet discovered

  • I imagine incandescent will remain if for no other reason than lava lamps. They've got just enough fans and the incandescent is perfect for them. If their manufacture goes away some niche uses company will probably pick them up.

Period focused lighting may also use them. And, now I'm remembering the monthly or so task of having to replace light bulbs back when I was a kid. It feels like a ridiculous old timey thing these days, like milkmen.

  • And it's about a home other people don't respect. I've known Appalachians and folks from the deep south who're great people but folks hear their voices and assume the worst. There's some real awesome folks down in Alabama, 8tsbu7e5 that the ones in charge are real pieces of shit.
