  • biggest thing is just taking things at her pace. rewarding for exploring on her own and relaxing around “scary” stimuli like other dogs, people, and new objects.

  • i always pick dogs i think will enjoy it, since it's my main reason for having dogs, hehe. my last dog (passed away last year) was the only one i've owned who didn't really enjoy agility on any level. she was my professional couch potato. she was also much more chill than my other two agility nerds.

  • pretty great! had my first agility lesson of the new year with the pups, and they rocked it. got a crate for the incoming foster dog (her name is coco, pics next week). got together with some bike/camp folks and planned our next campout and longer day ride. got to see the fellowship of the ring (extended edition) at the theater. played a first session of a tabletop game called wickedness.

i need to stop being so busy, but at least it’s good busy. 😮‍💨

  • big yikes at the ex. i had something similar several years ago. block that turd!

  • did my traditional new year’s day bike ride. had about 12-15 people show up! rode ~15 miles at an easy pace and feeling great.

  • i'm still bummed the humble black bean burger (usually no extra charge) has been replaced by beyond/impossible (usually a $1-3 upcharge) at so many restaurants.

  • i've been playing on 4thewords for awhile now, and while i'm not super active in the forums, they are very, very active. it's not free, but the subscription isn't horribly expensive, and the artwork is to die for. you may even be able to see the forums without a subscription? i'm not entirely sure.

  • had a solstice bonfire on friday with friends which was really nice. hanging out with my partner’s family for the weekend, then heading to the country to decompress before new years. i always do a bike ride new year’s day, so i’m looking forward to that!

  • is there anywhere you could volunteer? at least around here, many kitchens who cater to the houseless are open and serving folks.

  • it's a turtle in recovery, so that's the identification number! technically this turtle has recovered, but it's too late in the year to release it, so it's overwintering until it's warm out again. this is all through the local vet school, NC state university. :)

  • i grew up in a very rural place (my parents’ land was literally a cornfield before we put a house on it, and every other neighbor was also a cornfield). i don’t miss the reliance on cars, the racist culture, or the loose dogs who bit me. but boy howdy i do miss trail riding on our property and being able to see all the stars at night. i’ve been a city dweller since i was 15 (35 now), and i can’t imagine going back to rural life.

  • i'm on my last day of house sitting two big goofy german shepherds (+ a turtle). it's been nice to veg out and chill with some mellow dogs and not have anything else to worry about. looking forward to sleeping in my own bed tonight though. i'll be back here for a quick overnight on saturday-sunday, then going into winterfest weekend full ham.

  • i’ll never understand why cat owners think it’s totally fine to let their cats run all around the neighborhood unchecked. my sister does this with her cat, claiming the cat is street smart about cars??? infuriating to say the least.

  • this is such a mood. i’m still waiting for the next stardew valley.

  • Grinch

    Jump
  • that’s a pretty far leap to make. cats, like dogs, can be trained with positive reinforcement to accept and even enjoy doing tricks like wearing clothing for a short time.

  • i had coffee with a (newish) friend of mine last week. we've only met a handful of times because scheduling in your 30s is impossible, i guess?

had my first (dog) agility lesson since october. unfortunately my older dog hurt his paw, so only the younger one could go. the good news is that the younger one did really well! i think, now that she's a bit past three years old, her puppy brain is finally turning into an adult dog brain.

we saw the boy and the heron on saturday, and it is so, so good. i'm already itching to rewatch it when it becomes available digitally since i feel like i missed a lot of little details.

i spent saturday night house sitting for two big cuddly dogs (pictured below).

  • fun fact! dogs will scratch their ears/look away to show they are not a threat.

  • i was going to say some kind of neurological problem, but that could be it too.
