typically there is food and drinks (alcoholic and otherwise). often a fire if the weather cooperates. mostly it’s just a way to gather up like minded friends on a regular basis so we can catch up. sometimes there’s a theme (plant swap, remembering our loved ones who have passed recently, craft night, etc.), but usually it’s very casual.
there happens to be a great train from my town to the next that:
is a lot cheaper than a ride share (only $7 for 30-40 miles)
your bike rides for free
is quicker or at least the same amount of time as driving
picks you up and drops you off downtown
my only complaint is that it only runs 4 times per day, and it can’t really be used as a commuter train or getting home late because of the hours. most people here (raleigh and durham) don’t even know it’s an option.
the foss crowd can be very “i know better than you” in my experience (a femme-presenting person in tech). i started a geographically local instance because that was what i missed most about that sort of social media: finding out about stuff that was happening nearby.
what kinds of things are you looking for on mastodon? there are also lots of hobby-related instances with overlapping foss interests that tend to be more chill from what i’ve seen.
good. i found a ton of these nasty little things in my backyard when i moved into my current house. the house was (no surprise) previously occupied by a bunch of undergrads.
find a social hobby and stick with it. for me, that was group bike rides that turned into group bike camping rides. now a few of us are traveling across the country next summer to do RAGBRAI (7-day bike ride of 400-500 miles). 🥴
"These are the vapes that have pink unicorns on them, bubblegum flavouring, disguised in order for them to hide them in their pencil cases," Butler told a news conference.
To ensure the bans don't limit access for smokers looking to quit, doctors and nurses will be given expanded powers in January to prescribe therapeutic vapes where clinically appropriate.
But therapeutic vapes will be restricted from using flavours, have limited nicotine levels and be sold in pharmaceutical packaging under new rules to be introduced next year, with a transition period for manufacturers to comply.
from what i understand, vaping is much easier to get into due to the taste/smell. so neither is good for anyone, but cigarettes are seen as gross and the companies that make vaping products have tricked teens into thinking that they’re safe.
sounds like leash-free zones to me with voice control! most public places in the states are leash required. those that aren’t require dogs to be under voice control, which it sounds like your dogs are doing a great job of.
here (in the states) letting a dog off leash is really inadvisable because there are too many risks (cars, other unruly dogs, etc.). i’ve never felt like it was animal cruelty since we have plenty of places to run around in safe zones, like a big yard or dog parks. i also train my dogs for agility competition, and none of the dogs i know are allowed off leash unless it’s a fenced in area.
could totally be a cultural thing. in the rural areas in the states, it’s much different. my childhood dogs were rarely on leash because cars weren’t a danger and we had 36 acres for them to run around.
off leash dogs are the worst. i’m a huge dog lover, but put your dog on a leash! i don’t care how well trained your dog is, they’re not a robot, so unless it’s a leash-free zone… and even then, they’d better be under voice control.
we’re trailer camping in the west virginia mountains for a couple of nights before heading to my sister’s house. my niece is turning thirteen this week, and i’m excited to hang out with her because she thinks i’m the “cool aunt” which is what i always hoped to be.
just wanted to say i agree with all this. i was sweating reading through OP’s story because i’ve been there and had to just get out because it was so demoralizing.
definitely not a stupid question!
