@CraigCabbage I think you reprent alot of people. My vision is that eventually an #opensource based #router - #server with the features of #openwrt and #yunohost and a clear simple guided sertup would enable drop in personal / fanily email, file serving, personal finance, social media and network sharing solutions.
@Thorry84@semperverus I'm often surprised how behind the times the US is. I mean chequebooks anyone? Card swiping? Overnight payment systems? Feels like a step back to the 90's
@Thorry84@semperverus Im just checking . Are you discussing what is basically ASDA shop and go.. or the same service with a different name offered by every major UK supermarket ? asda.com/instore/scan-and-go
@warmaster I was just agreeding and suggesting that their monetisation strategy is licencing hence the reason for improvements for Enterprise clusters rather than focusing on Self Hosting is the money.
@Dave@liv Its horses for courses. Pumped hydro is great in areas with suitable terrain and for longer term storage. In other areas / applications batteries make sense. NZ is of course capital constrained. It would be great to do everything altogether all at once but its a journey right and you have to bring people along with you.
There is also a weird effect with new tech where delaying actually makes economic sense if costs are going down so you get the most bang for your buck by holding off for a bit.
@bizdelnick Oh I love Openwrt andnfor router functionality its great. But I am trying to have my cake and eat it by seeing what applications I could also selfhost on the box as well. e.g. anything such as email, file sharing, activitypub server or homeassistant
@KazuchijouNo Just install something like WordPress which generates RSS of posts automatically. Bonus you can add the Activitypub plug in and syndicate your content with Mastodon etc.
@Tugboater203@throwawayacc0430 It's just them moving the IP addresses they have around to other parts of their network. Nothing wrong with that. The companies that geocode IP numbers will update their databases eventually.
@Blisterexe Well so many businesses do this because they believe that the vendor will somehow charge less if they can reuse that code... but if its highly customised thats unlikely . it just becomes a case of pushing the costs down the road.
@yak So this is an interesting thing. Obviously the functionality required by the #PostOffice is to a degree bespoke - but not considering ownership was a critial failure of the contracting process.
Interestingly I think that there is something that every #creditunion that outsources its #corebanking and other IT should consider - How locked into that offering they are and what happens if they want to change? #Opensource#banking solutions offer the ability to both switch vendors and also customise to their requirements realitively easily - I'm not sure how many use solutions based on #mifos or #fineract - I guess they are still fairly new.
@EarMaster I'm going to say that if you are doing it for wider family that might still be worth it (given that you can get a private stream and your network feed might be more relevant for other family members - But then it is a case of bringing your family along with you.. If you are doing other stuff for them (email, file sharing , device management - Then maybe an ActivityPub server becomes a bit of an addon
@Ulrich Ia really think the idea of having a 'common bond' is a good idea to stick to. Whether thats 'my family ' or ' members of my sailing club' or ' people i went to school with' Anything beyond that you want some legal structures between you and the users to provide a level of protection
Now I can't help them when it comes to #gotosocial - So perhaps others can chip in.
My thoughts were that with separate subdomains (or domains ) in Yunohost you can separate out instances for Family/Friends and the group they belong to but
I'm also aware that some #ActivityPub servers can run multiple separte instances for different groups while optimising federation - I think #takake did that - but again I don't know much about that approach -
When it comes to the questiona bout being maintained. THat is a question a group I belong to has been considering since they worry about having to maintain infrastructure for a Sports Club and don't want to get bogged down in keeping the lights on - Here I guess I think using templates where possible (which I think Yunohost is kind of ) and professional support for #Opensource solutions might come in handy . (people like #autonomic I guess - or just having enough people in your group to provide the support..
